Compared to my 60cm Rambouillet, a 61cm Road Standard has 1.5cm longer top tube, 1cm shorter chain stays, .5 degree steeper head tube and probably will only take a 32 tire.  Numbers are nice, but I'm curious if anyone has first hand experience with both?  Is the ride similar?  Is one sportier, stiffer, or more compliant, etc. than the other?

I've not ridden a road standard, but I've ridden 3 Rivendell road customs as well as a Ram, and I find that my customs -- note: all use so-called 26" wheels with lightish road tires -- are a noticeable bit quicker into the turns (while being equally stable in the straight line). The Ram is very nice, though, and -- as I put it to myself shortly after I got it -- feels a bit more confident coasting downhill at 30+ when you sit up, take one hand off the bar, and look 180 degrees behind you.

Second: the Ram, as well as my two remaining road customs, exhibits the very distinct quality which I have found with 4/5 of the Rivs I've owned, and only in a select few other bikes, that regardless of weight or wheels or tires, it makes me feel more energetic and makes it feel as if I can push a gear one tooth higher in all circumstances. IE, it feels lively and not dead. Again, regardless of weight, wheel weight, or tires.

As far as stiffness nor flexibility, I feel nothing different. But I may be entirely opaque to such things.

FWIW.

"Where you come from is gone, where you thought you were going to never was there, and where you are is no good unless you can get away from it. Where is there a place for you to be? No place.
"Nothing outside you can give you any place," he said. "You needn't to look at the sky because it's not going to open up and show no place behind it. You needn't to search for any hole in the ground to look through into somewhere else. You can't go neither forwards nor backwards into your daddy's time nor your children's if you have them. In yourself right now is all the place you've got. If there was any Fall, look there, if there was any Redemption, look there, and if you expect any Judgment, look there, because they all three will have to be in your time and your body and where in your time and your body can they be?
"Where in your time and your body has Jesus redeemed you?" he cried. "Show me where because I don't see the place. If there was a place where Jesus had redeemed you that would be the place for you to be, but which of you can find it?”     -- Flannery O'Connor, Wise Blood

I have both bikes. The Road is a much quicker steering bike than the Ram, which tracks like it's on rails. The Road is made from Reynolds 753 with 531 forks which gives it a noticeably livlier ride than than the Ram, which is very smooth and comfortable. I love them both, but these days put more time on the Road saddle than the Ram's. Both have the same Selle Anatomica saddle model, btw, as does the Saluki which gets less time than either.

500 is a great price for a Waterford built bike. What year is yours? 54 is probably not the catalog size, depending on your year, and of course the measure is c-t-t.  I should point out that the Road standard has a slightly sloped TT and extended HT which the  earlier Road like mine does not have. Also the lugs decals and dropouts are different between early and later models. All are good though.

Thanks!  That's exactly what I was hoping for - something a little more sporty and lively.

Question regarding your 2nd post:  Do you know more about the specific differences between the earlier "Road" and the later "Road Standard"?  Cyclofiend has info on the Road Standard, but haven't been able to find anything on the earlier Road. The bike I'm looking at is 753/531 with Sachs(?) lugs, but it does not have an extended head tube leading me to believe it's an earlier "Road".

Your date code on the BB shell will tell you when your bike was made. Level TT?  Whose dropouts?

If someone has a Road that can take 28s and fenders and that has a 57 or so top tube, that he wants to trade for a 58 cm Ram in good condition (I'd bet it will take fenders with 35s; at any rate, fenders easily fit over the 30 mm Parigi Roubaix with much room to spare), I'd be interested in starting a conversation. Not sure that the Ram isn't best for my purpose -- all round pavement bike -- but I miss the better turn-in of my customs. Also, I find that the Ram's front wanders when I sit and pedal up a steep hill at low speeds, particularly with a rear load of any size.

35 mm Kojaks shown in the photos.

Thanks.  Unfortunately the frame is not in my possession and won't be accessible for a while.  Here's a shot of the non-extended head tube also showing the old style lugs...

Is the top tube level or sloped?
