I got my pop's Windsor into rideable condition last night.  I rode it around the block and I'm extremely pleased so far.  The real highlight is that the 40 year old Dia Compe centerpull brakes have extraordinary braking power.  I'm really really impressed.  It's not done in my mind until the racks and fenders are on, but getting it to rideable was a big step.  The racks ought to be in soon, maybe tomorrow, and then I'll be able to do the rack and fender install.  Even without racks, the Saddlesack Medium fits, so this bike is S24O ready.  It's full Alba-smile worthy.

Imperfection side story.  I was so thrilled how the bar tape looked with clear shellac.  I ran out of clear and rushed down to the hardware store.  They were down to their last can of clear, and that can was kind of banged up.  It had splatter and drips on it, but it seemed full when I shook it.  Whatever.  I bought it and have done a couple more coats of "clear".  It's looking more amber, and the one side that I first did with clear looks lighter than the side that got three coats of this tainted can.  Oh well, we're making memories (as my mom always says)!

This is my favorite bike story of the new year.  Partly because it’s not only (or even mostly!) a bike story.  Well done, Bubba.

This is terrific, Bill. I'm inspired by the flickr set, and it's a great how-to. Can't wait to see how it all comes together with fenders and racks. Many thanks for sharing.

Beautiful resurrection job Bill!  that is one sweet looking ride.  I agree on the Center-pull brakes, I have become such a fan that when I build my next "dream" steel bike I am thinking going with the Modern Dia-Compe 610s.  Enjoy the ride

Thanks everyone for the kind words.  This really has been fun.  The racks and fenders setup has really got me excited.  Local (SF) retailer BoxDog Bikes has a 20% discount on all fenders through February, in part because we've had no rain.  I bought some smooth 700x50 Berthoud Stainless Steel jobbies from them.  The front and rear racks are the Velo Orange Constructeur models.  The rear attaches at the dropout and then twice to the fender and that's all!  Super clean look.  Since these steel fenders feel totally bomber I expect it'll be plenty solid.  It will be my first time to do an install like this, but it will be so old school and cool.  The front attaches at the dropout, once to the fender, and once through the fork crown daruma.  So, on a bike that has zero rack braze-ons, and no canti posts, I'll have front and rear racks with zero P-clamps.  I think that's so hot.  Anyway, stay tuned.

a little bit of shellac goes a long way - two coats is all you ever want.
looking forward to seeing the final version - not that these things are ever quite finished - that is, unless you put them on a shelf.
Keep riding.

After the racks and fenders are done, it will go into full daily rider service.  Meanwhile, the real emotional part of the project can kick off.  Some of you will remember that my father and I were collaborating on the Grip King Supreme.  These were extra pedal cages that augment the Grip King.  We did the design, and made and sold a prototype batch here to the group.  If you search the archives or my flickr for "Grip King Supreme" you'll see them.

When I picked up the bike over Christmas, I also picked up all the tooling my father had been working on to help get me into production.  The setup is not complete, and I'll have to reverse engineering the procedure, but I have a general idea of what he had in mind.  The real topper for the Windsor will be when I put on the Grip King Supremes.  Hopefully I will finally get into production, and the 20 or so emails I've saved from prospective customers will finally be returned.

A huge testimonial from here for the Grip King Supremes.  I have a set on my Mystery Bike, and there is no more comfortable pedal anywhere.  Here:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8366365230/in/set-72157630957672582/

Thanks all.  I got the racks and fenders installed.  It is a lot of work doing this kind of integrated install.  The rear has no frame mounted stays.  It bolts on at the dropout and then bolts to the fender in two places.  The front attaches at the dropout, at the crown with a daruma, and to the rack platform.  Now I'm ready for just about anything.  Except now that the fenders are fully fitted, now I get to take them back off for pinstriping!

Bill,

I find it interesting that this was an inexpensive bicycle...cause it looks outstanding. Curious you said IIRC that you planned using it for overnights?

Sure, I'll use it for S24Os.  I think the bike probably cost about $150 in 1973.

Not THAT inexpensive.  I think that’s not all that much more than I paid for the Fuji S-10S I took to Europe in the summer of 1974, which was a very high quality (and even higher value!) bike.  IIRC, price was $195.  Carried me and gear all over England and France, while I attempted to find myself.  (Still looking.)

Pinstriping complete!  Horrible lighting, but it's done.  I'm pressing the Windsor right into service as my daily commuter.  I'll have the chance to take a couple shots in natural light tomorrow.  Copious close ups of the pinstriping is there on my flickr.  I think it looks spectacular.

Thanks Bobby.  I rode it in service yesterday.  I had a couple amusing shake-down ride experiences:

1.  I forgot how easily chrome seatposts slide.  My 75.5cm SH was 73cm by the time I got home.  Tighten it up, Nancy!
2.  I was getting noise shifting into the 32 cog, and this 1973 suntour derailer has a B-Screw, so I tightened it, rotating the derailer AWAY from the freewheel in order to clear the 32.  That made the noise worse.  Turns out that it runs quiet when the upper jockey wheel is almost riding on the 32, so I had to loosen the b-screw.  It was kind of the opposite of normal rear derailer setup conventions

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Albatross bars.

More add-ons will include the Nitto wireguard, to keep my Saddlesack off the rear brake.  I also ordered a pair of black Sackville hub shiners, and a hammerstrike bell.  Riv content: I ordered all three from Rivendell
