Hugh,
I enjoyed reading about your commute and seeing the photographs.  It seems like you will have many more commuting stories to share.  I hope all goes well with your plumbing work and the car.
All the best,
Erl

Thanks Erl. I'm just smiling and enjoying the ride. These are all lessons for me...and every new experience keeps me young at heart.

Hugh:

Looks like you've adapted nicely.  Riding home late with no cars would be an experience.  Good luck with the weather.

Thanks Doug, forecast is now calling for heavy rain on Friday. At this point crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I may resort to a short ride into the canyon and pitch a tent.

I was thinking about you and plumbing pipe just the other day and your expertise.

nice story Hugh ( except the pipe issue). Great that you have rail options too.  I really enjoy riding at night myself, as long as there is a safe bike lane or wide shoulder.

I never tried bike commuting when I was working. It was about 26 miles but I went in too early and a lot of the  route had very heavy traffic through Newhall Pass.

Hey Mike,

Thanks. Yeah the night ride was eerie good. Riding though Flintridge//La Cananda  was weird with out street lights.

Today's commute was 26 miles with a constant head wind less time to relax and more push which was okay too. Just different.

I plan on speaking to Metrolink about moving their last train from Union Station on the Antelope line to a bit later...then my ride how would be a mere 8 miles. We'll see I'm first meeting with some folks from the Los Angeles City Bike Coalition, getting my ducks in a row first.

Make sure to pitch your tent on high ground!  I know we tend to get overly excited at the prospect of rain but this one looks to be potentially serious in recent burn areas.  The Ventura FD always has rescue calls near the mouth of the Ventura River during storms.

I wish I could go. But I'm struggling to sleep right now with a wicked cold. This weather report settles it. Time to stay in and watch some movies about EM50's, caddies, and ghosts instead. And then maybe I'll repeat that same day the next day.

My new experience? Going car free. But the bike commute is too short. 1.7 miles, to be exact.

Seems like it takes me longer to wheel it out, don the helmet and jacket, strap on the bag and get the lights and reflectors right than it does to pedal home.

Trying to stretch it out to >10 miles in a not ridiculously circuitous route so the bus (or walking) doesn't become too easy an option.

Hugh
I had a commute 21 miles both ways for twoish years.
I strove to ride at least 2 days a week so as not to go crazy with the long off times I had for some of my work week.

I had to admit to myself that my commute sucked sometime but no matter how much it sucked it was better then riding my car.

I always found that 2ish hours of biking > 30 mins of driving.

Start putting up a tally. Tallys are always fun. I got 80+ days in last year. Not consecutive mind you but 80+ days never the less.

Doug,

Yes high ground, yes high ground. I'm a survivor so yes I'll choose some high ground. I told the wife I may pedal Friday 5 miles up Big T bring a book, sandwich, pitch my tent (on high ground) and sleep.  And in the morning promptly bring my soaking carcass home.

We'll see how important this S240 a month club is to me on Friday when I look out the window from a dry home.

And I know what you mean it is the smell of money...starting to think I got into the wrong trade.

Ah ha Jeff your now in Los Angeles. Yeah you have the exact opposite ride from me. We need to ride together soon. Perhaps you'd like to do a S240 in Joshua Tree?

Hey Manny,

Yes I will keep a tally good idea.  I'm also looking to stitch together a bike commute that has light rail involved to help mitigate the crazy miles. We'll see how that goes. What's your commute these days?

And yet I still got hit by a car.

Saw it happening, so slowed. Quick right turn in front of me. Bumper hit my front tire just right, so I planted my foot on the curb before it had a chance to send me down.

I think my pedal did more damage to his front quarter panel than his bumper did to my fork paint. No blood, no foul.

Are there Mercedes SUVs in Joshua Tree?

Grand adventure all through the week! Grin.Hugh, I wanted to comment on your upcoming rainy S24O, but can't for the life of me find that thread and Google search and I don't get along well. Could you or someone point me in the right direction please?

With abandon,
Patrick
