Just got back from Ojai/Ventura on a whirlwind overnighter...Friday morning picked up Evan in Canyon Country and drove out to the Matilija drainage off Hwy 33 above Ojai. It's late I'm exhausted in a good way and fully intend to do a good ride report...for now we made in n out safe and sound with lots of adventure. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetites. And a good night!

Hi Hugh

That's a pretty tantalizing glimpse.  Love the scene with the campfire.
Glad to see the Coconut rolls.

Guiness & brown rice?  An interesting combination.  "Where's the beef?" (to the tune of a long ago ad).

Looking forward to the detailed report & photos.

Lol's Doug...yeah I recall that commercial. Yep I'm an olden. The Brown rice went with the Indian curry dish...figure since the British Empire spent so much time in the sub-continent they'd blend together sufficiently as it was they complimented each other quite well.

I'm pretty sure that camp is Upper Santa Inez trail camp. There are a multitude of nice dirt roads and trails in that drainage. Bryan Conant has an excellent trail map of that whole area.  Plenty of places for s24o's and multi-day trips in the future.

Great shot of the campfire! I got to do a shorter day ride on the trail leaving downtown Ventura and heading up to Ojai earlier in the fall. Neat place, interesting transition as you pass the oil else and task farm before getting up to the hills! If love to have time on a subsequent trip for an overnight.

Well I know you've all been waiting breathlessly for my latest ride report and you have all put your Holiday plans on hold till I got this out! Well here it is hot off the presses so to speak. Writing this was a pleasure the formatting with Google blogger is less than desirable so I'll be looking for another host blab, blab, blab...

Hope to see many of you in the New Year for more great rides, experiences and of course some stout (did you notice that David? I made a non specific reference to a general stout not Guinness so your Murphy's is realizable) or what ever you fancy.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Keep the rubber side down.

Brilliant write up, Hugh. Maps are overrated. No matter the map, if you are doing things right, adventure ensues in the wilds.

With abandon,

Hugh:

Thanks for writing up your thoughts.  A trip isn't really an adventure if you know how it's going to turn out.  You guys seem to have adjusted well to situations encountered.  Reading the beginning & adding up the 30+6.5+5+?? miles, I thought, "wow, hope the off pavement bits aren't too tough".  I've been told there is an actual hot spring back there somewhere but maybe Mike knows exactly where.

Now that you guys have been the scouts, you'll get more company on the next trip.  I'm well practiced at pushing my Atlantis up hills.

Nice write up Hugh, There are some better maps of the area. I have one by Conant that was recently revised and has all the trail camps listed.  I also have a few out of print guide books to the area that have great info. BTW, Murietta camp is not on the road, there is a hiking trail that parallels the road and the trail camp is on that.
Little and Big Caliente Hot Springs would be doable from where you started when the days are longer with an early start. The downside is that you can drive a car in from the other side and get within 2 miles if the dirt road is open to cars.

Sounds like you had quite an adventure and a good time. Although maybe Evan should get some bombproof tires for his bike.

Thanks Mike. I plan on getting some better maps shortly :-) The Ojai ranger district claimed that the 2 mile dirt road to the springs was currently closed to automobiles  but then they also said there was water at all the camps. I thought Driving by car to Romero Saddle would be a good jumping off point for back country rambling but on longer days and an early start would be great from another location.

I'm thinking of doing a flash S240 on Gleason soon!

Mike,

you're probably right beefing up Homer's tires.
I bought some Rumpkins off the list, but they blew a side wall within about a week, so back to the Somas (which handle remarkably well considering).
Just waiting until the funds roll in, and then some major upgrades to Homer and the MB-1 will get bosco-bullmoosed.

I think if your going to go off road then in the 650b it's either some iteration of the marathon or another Schwalbe tire and the Fatty Runmkin's for durability. It's always a compromise between supple feel and flat resistance...when your touring the last thing you feel like doing is unloading panniers and flipping the bike over!
