My name is Doug & I have a serious luggage rack problem.....now, I think I need another one.

In today's BLUG post, check out the rear rack on the 51 cm Sam in the last photo.  It's got the lower pannier mounting bars that allow easy access to the top platform with panniers attached.  It looks like the front hoop is either really low or gone, so there is more useful area on the platform.  This really looks like a good evolution.  If the lower mounts are nice long tabs that can be cut to fit, one of these may wind up on the mini-Lantis.

This is the rack that's been mentioned somewhere (here? BLUG?) as one of Mark's projects.  I recall something about Rivendell wanting to replace the 2 different sizes of Big Back Rack with a single version, which makes a lot of sense.  This looks like it.  ETA from Nitto is "soon".

I wish Mark's other project rack (the HUB area rack) would be sooner than later too.   Seems like it's been forever.

I don't believe they offer the Sam Hillborne in 68cm.  The Sam only takes us up to 96cm PBH.  ~100cm PBH folks and taller are forced to go Hilsen nowadays.

The Sam has an up sloping top tube so it's supposed to fit taller folks better than say a 64 Atlantis.

I'm 6"7' with a 99 PBH and when I called Riv to talk bikes they said it would work well for me.  (I decided to convert my existing bike to 650b instead of acquiring a new frame)

Jim,

You have my dimensions.  I ride a 67 Hilsen and really like the bike.

Saw this rack in person at RBWHQ yesterday and it's looking great.  Three racklight mounting holes, as opposed to the one we're all used to. There is a slight front hoop at the saddle side of the rack, though it's a 1/4" high I'd guess.

Hi I'm Hugh and I have a luggage rack problem... what about this Nitto Campee rack with low rider detachable hoops does anyone have experience with this rack? I dig the low rider hoops and that they're removable. Though the top platform seems a bit small yet in this image here they have a Sackville saddle bag mounted which IMHO looks awesome.

Doug I do like the look of  that rack however it seems awful similar to my Tubus Cosmo rack. I've noticed that even with the lower mount on the Cosmo with a load on the platform it still is a hassle to mount and dismount panniers especially with a good load on top.

I don't know how you rack-laden chaps do it.
I have my stripped down Sam with just my Pendle bag.
I couldn't imagine trying to pedal with loaded racks.
You must be very strong riders, especially you cats who ride off road, which I think is even harder to pedal on that surface.

Hi Michael,

I generally don't ride off road with panniers...I typically like my loads up high when off road. But it all depends on 1.) terrain 2.) system. This is not to say I won't ever though when I have my Atlantis built that may change. I liked the look of the Nitto Campee rack keeping the center of gravity low.

Hugh:

As luck would have it, a Cosmo came into my life a while back & I like it a lot.  Haven't used it with panniers & loading the platform yet.  Functionally the Nitto & the Cosmo may be interchangeable.  However, and I realize this is completely silly, to me the Nitto looks a lot nicer.  Tubus racks are wonderful pieces of engineering but visually they tend to reflect their German heritage.

What I'm hoping is that the new Nitto will have provision for trimming the mounting tabs as the R-26 does so that it can sit lower on the 47 cm mini-Lantis.  My wife likes her rack trunk bag but it's a hassle with panniers.  And of course there's the thrill of opening a package from Rivendell!

Hugh:

I just recently mounted a pair of those Campee racks on a 1984 Stumpjumper Sport, and the rear platform is plenty big enough to support a Large Sackville Saddlesack.  I think the racks look terrific without the lowrider attachments.  Haven’t ridden with yet.  On the left in this shot, http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/11052521934/ and here are the racks bare:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/9785981285/in/set-72157635815847045

Hi Tom,

Well I've been showing my Wife your shop...she say's so this is what you want the garage to look like :-) Is that too much to ask for ;-) She's game and understands.

The only image other than yours I've seen with the Campee racks and loaded is from Lovelybike. I like how the low rider mounts keep the load low for added stability plus that they're removable. It doesn't seem they're that popular among "Riv folk so less feed back. I just dig the way they look with and without low rider attachments. Thanks for the reply and Happy New Year.

Hugh:

Back at you – Happy (Belated) New Year wishes.

You nailed it – the reason I like the detachable lowrider racks is that they look great with or without the lowriders, and they’re REALLY functional in keeping the weight low when they’re on.

Did you get your Atlantis built yet?  Pics?

Tom,

Thanks for the confirmation on the campee racks. The Atlantis has had a small set back...I didn't like the color so it's being repainted.More to come shortly.

too bad Hugh on your color change.  You probably won't break my record for re-paints though (I hope!).

I have the Nitto Campee front rack with detachable low riders.  Very well made and quite sturdy.  I would recommend them also.

I asked RBW about the new rack on the BLUG and below is the response from Spencer:

 Hi Brian-

That's a medium big rear prototype.   I expect new ones of those to arrive probably Feb and large ones maybe Feb or March.

The new ones fit and cost the same as the old ones, and will even be listed on the old big back rack website product listing:
