Reflection on S24O/Mo

Hughes almost two month journey in this endeavor and the challenge he’s having fitting in February’s S24O got me thinking on a number of fronts, and I’d love to hear other’s thoughts:

— The intriguing thing to me about going at least once a month is the creativity and wonder and joy of experiencing beauty in all types of weather. Well, for me personally, I get that range already, so I don’t need the imposition of whether I go by bike, ski pulk, or for more than one night. If I accidentally accomplish it, then cool. Grin.

— I have enough challenges that for me the idea of an imposed schedule would be a burden rather than a freedom, though I can easily see how the structure could lead to freedom for others.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten and I’d love to hear your experience and thoughts.

I try to abstain from too many set things in my life. I have work from 8:30-5 every day, that seems to be enough. I like the flexibility of doing things when they work and not feeling guilty when they don't. Scheduling activities, especially if others are joining you, is sometimes necessary, but it can also make the activity feel like a burden.

When you have a regular schedule such as work, school, etc., it is nice to have your "free time" be truly free.  However, if you don't look a bit forward & decide, for instance, "this weekend I'm going camping" it's too easy for time to just slide by.  There's a balance there somewhere that may differ for each of us.  I know people who schedule themselves out months in advance as well as people who don't think about the weekend until Thursday night.  I think the key is if an activity feels like a burden or instills guilt then it may be smart to back off a bit.  Think about "ride my bike every day, come rain, snow, or sleet"  Something we all enjoy but sheesh that would quickly get old for me.

The burdens in my life compel me to attempt a bike overnight a month. 

I would characterize myself like those mustangs penned up rather than running free in the open country...I have purposely submitted to our societies convention of working and care taking a home (rather than the absurd notion of home ownership as everything is transitory and we don't own anything in this moment) for some modicum of financial imperative.

If the process of attempting to do an overnight a month adds to my stress level then I wouldn't hesitate ending the endeavor immediately. At my core I am a nomad and these foray's are my tether to who I am. Don't mistake me I enjoy the comforts of modern living but there is a physical & physic cost. I choose to offset those costs within my domain. Freedom is what I'm after. Om Tat Sat Om...Yes that the real. Jai Devi.

my opinion is that if you miss one month double up the next month.   Maybe even get ahead and do two months with two trips!

If my wife didn't mind I'd be out on the trails for a week per month.

I really wanted to attempt the "Bike Overnight a month" club (my camping trips are rarely under 24 hours in length) this year. While Portland isn't as balmy as SoCal, it still is mild enough (usually) to pull off camping in the winter. But I realized that I didn't have enough time in January to pull it off, at least pull it off without stressing out about it. I've just decided to do as many Bike Overnights (and tours) as possible this year, and if I can get in one a month, it's good. I wrote about it over here:
