Flash CO Pikes Peak Ride

Seeing all the fun SoCal and Portlandia are having I thought this may be worth a go.

When: Saturday, November 16, meet at 9am and plan for the day.

Where: TBD. Depending on snow the day(s) before and rider preference, options include:

— Phantom Canyon or Cold Camp Road (dirt railroad grades) (meet near Cripple Creek)

— Manitou Lake to Deckers (option to Buffalo Creek) and back (paved, fairly secluded mountain road)

— If not too snowy, ride some Pikes Peak single track starting off the end of Edlow Road west of Woodland Park.

Location will be chosen based on riders interest and/or weather (the first two should be ok, the latter can be problematic depending on snow amount at higher elevations.).

Let me know if you are interested. Final ride info will be posted Thursday or Friday. My participation is dependent on my brain capacity Saturday, but I am foolishly hopeful! If you have scented laundry detergent or soap/shampoo etc., I’ll just ride on your windward side. Grin.

Deacon outstanding! I like the fact that though you have scent sensitivity you will accommodate those by riding up wind. I agree with Doug spontaneity is a great thing, keeps things fresh...and if I could I'd be there with as little scent as I could manage. Look forward to seeing the pictures for what I know is amazingly scenic terrain you fortunate fellow.

The strength of the scent will determine the distance. Grin. There were some amazing pine, vanilla and loamy scents on today's ride. Curious to smell what is in store for a post snow ride (snow likely Friday).

Wish I could join you, but I have to work through the weekend. Saturday may be the last good mountain ride day of the year. The storm system passing through on Sunday was looking more impressive, producing significant mountain snows.

Och! Dave and Mojo, that's a bummer you have to work the weekend. Is that standard for you both? We'll just have to plan a ride around your schedules. Depending on sun and snow frequency, roads can be surprisingly clear -- one possibility for some winter rides is some of the dirt roads outside of Deckers, in the Haymen burn area, which obviously gets lots of sun exposure compared with a forested road. That would make it an easier drive for you both to get there, too, would it not?

So far that are up to three of us going. Here is the planned ride (switched from the Pikes Peak region so Denver area folks needn't drive three hours one way):

The Ride: Colorado Trail, Segment 3. (24 miles RT) with possible options  in the Buffalo Creek Rec. Area. -- open to ideas.

The plan is for a fun, all day, but relaxed ride.

Meet at the trail head around 9am

Directions (from the Colorado Trail Guide Book):

From Denver: 285 SW to Pine Junction. Turn left on Jefferson County Rd. 126 (Pine Valley Rd.) and proceed through Pine and Buffalo Creek. Continue 4 miles past the bridge over the South Platte River in Buffalo Creek to the intersection with FS Road 550. This intersection is also 1 miles past Spring Creek Road. Turn right (west) on FS Road 550 and drive 0.1 mile to the parking area. There is a parking fee of $5 (but parking may? be available on the FS road?).

Food:

I won't be eating, but you are welcome to bring whatever you like for snacks and lunch. There are plenty of food and beer options in the gambling town of Cripple Creek for after (though I can't join for my bludgeoned brain).

If a Hard Brain Day: In the event that I'm not doing well enough to ride on Saturday, I will post here by 6:30am (let me know if that is not enough time before you need to leave), though you are of course welcome to do the ride anyway!
