Nice and enjoyable. A craftsman indeed.

$5000 and not taking on any new commissions, but back in the shop.

Very cool.
A hand drill, a belt sander and some manual tools. Amazing!

Thanks, I enjoyed looking at that. It is good to be reminded that people can still find work that feeds that soul.

Beautiful images.

A friend loaned me a copy of the film about Sachs, "Imperfection is Perfection." If you haven't seen it, it was fun to watch. Impressive guy. Only found this trailer on youtube.

I was lucky to get on Richard's list back in 2001 when his wait time was only about 9 months and the frame price was much lower than today. I met him at his shop in CT, where he spent a couple of hours showing me around his museum-like workshop, taking measurements, and talking about how he liked to work. He was just a fascinating guy. During the build, he would send me hand drawn postcards of the progress every month or so. The frame came right around nine months after our visit, and it was - and still is - an incredible piece of craftsmanship and an absolutely amazing ride.

I got mine in 2002. I tracked the progress on this web page, which includes photos that Richard took as the frame progressed:

As Gary said, the frame is a work of art. Almost more like a huge piece of jewelry than a bicycle, really. I don’t ride it nearly enough.

Glad everyone is enjoying this! It was real nice flipping through them last night. The format is a bit different. I got a little tired of scrolling through the images, but thought it was unique. Haven't seen anything like that before. But regardless of format, the content was great.

I've seen the trailer for that bio, but not the full one.

Incomplete thought: Sachs and Sasha White seem to be the two halo-builders at this point. They have quite the followings!

Thanks, David.  Really nice photos.  I met Richard at the very first NAHBS in Houston.  I was stunned that he politely chatted with me for several minutes while I tried in vain to not appear star-struck.  Enjoyable and encouraging conversation.

I was mesmerized by that media format...  really cool insight into a pretty amazing craftsman's work.  Nice to hear from a couple of people who are actual customers of his to!  Thanks for sharing.

Seems like an amazing artist and interesting person. I've tried to order a frame from Sachs over the last 10-15 years and he never seems to be taking new orders. Maybe my timing is bad? It makes him seem less like someone who actually makes bikes than this mythical idealized version of someone who makes bikes. I always think of the old Bridgestone ad about the metal filings. I think that is how he and Grant met.

Again, seems like a good guy but I'd like him even more if I had one of his bikes!

Cheers!

AFAIK, Richard has stopped taking "new" orders for frames. He has a multi-year backlog that he's working through, and he will do repairs on existing RS frames, but other than that you won't be able to get a new frame.

All in all, a very enviable place for him to be.

What the heck does "atmo" mean? He used to pepper his posts with it..now it's on all his tweets.

Yeah, I get I could have Googled it. Having the question asked here where others could see the answer seemed more useful/entertaining to me.

Actually, it stands for "According To My Opinion"

If I recall, Richard Sachs doesn't just use "ATMO" as shorthand for "according to my opinion." He also uses it as a period, a comma, an interjection, a pause! Anyway, he certainly makes beautiful and functional bicycles—and he's inspired and helped many, many riders and builders over the years.

My favorite Sachsism is when he would offer something for sale: "Please reply if you're interesting." ;-)

A few years ago NAHBS was in Richmond where I live and on a lark and knowing nothing about Hand Built Bikes I went. In the middle of all these beautifully displayed bikes was 4 or 5 red ones covered in mud. So I asked the guy standing there " whats up with that? ". And as if he'd never heard the question before, he very patiently explained that he wanted to show off what they were good for and that they " at least in in his opinion " looked best with a little mud honestly earned caked on them. He explained what cyclocross was and that you didn't really need a special bike to do it but if you could afford it, what the heck why not? A very laid back and genuine guy.
