Hi Randos!

Back in 2023, I heard about a new Edulex light that was supposed to be released in 2024. This fancy new light has a light beam function as well as integrated USB charging. My plan was to get one for a new bike I have been putting together, but as of now, I do not see any new information about its release. I would love to pick one up, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do so.

Does anyone else happen to know anything about this light and when it might be available for purchase in the US? I have reached out to the manufacturer but have yet to hear back.

Ask Peter White Cycles (and let us know what he says). He's the US distributor. He listed it before ($450 or so!) but no longer does.
Some people bought it at a bike fair, tested it and reported problems with it.

igaro has a comparable light in terms of features at comparable price point.

Some sponsored riders used it at the Altlas Mountain Race. They made it to the finish line...

Kevin,
I would go to peterwhitecycles. He has been selling dynamo hubs and lights for years. I have the old lights and hubs.

Kevin,

Peter White just submitted a new advertisement page with this product, that will be in the Spring American Randonneur magazine.

I talked to Peter about this light, it’s brighter than previous ones, and has a high beam as well. I’m interested……

Peter White has had a full page ad in the American Randonneur Magazine, as long as I can remember, maybe from the start, his advertising helps offset the cost of the magazine for RUSA and it’s members.

Peter has built quite a few wheels for me, and they have always preformed beyond expectations. https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/

Please support our RUSA advertisers,

Peter white is the bomb!  He fixed up my favorite headlight that is no longer made.  It has a built in battery that provides regulated power for the tail light and my tailight was getting flakey.  Turns out the battery had gone bad.  Not only did he know 1) The thing has a battery!?! but also 2)What the issue was from my fumbling description and 3) How to quickly fix it and get me my light back for PBP.

Randonneuring and that magazine is so niche that I really take the ads and stuff folks mention seriously as recommendations.

I have a similar light, a Sinewave Beacon.  It's a generator powered light and has a USB port. I can vouch for it 100%.   I know a lot of people are getting away from using generator hubs but not me.at PBP,  It kept my GPS charged,  lights on front and rear, and saved me from a lot of worries about where am I going to recharge.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in! I just heard back from SON this morning. They told me the light should be available for purchase by October of this year. I will also reach out to Peter White and let everyone know if I hear anything else or different. Eric, thanks so much for the link, very informative!

I have ridden at least 140,000 miles on bikes equipped with dynamo lights that have integrated USB charging.

I've been really excited about the Ladelux light.  I set up a google alert to monitor its availability, and I will absolutely try it out (but I have one concern -- see below *).

In 2014, I started with a B&M Lumotec Luxos U. This light was great. It has a shaped beam with beam cutoff, so you can mount it on the fork crown and not worry about blinding people on shared trails. It has a great "standlight." The USB port and switch can be mounted on the handlebars.

But this light had two serious issues:

The wires mounted to tiny spade connectors on the body of the light.  They're fragile and prone to corrosion.  I had two break off.  I assume this is still an issue.

The light wasn't very water resistant, which makes it unacceptable for a place like Seattle.  I have heard they solved this problem, but they lost my trust.  If you can't depend on a dynamo light, there is not much of an advantage having one.

When the Sinewave Beacon came out, I bought one immediately, and now I have one on every single bike I ride (even my fat bike!).  One of these lights has at least 70,000 miles on it, and it still works as well as it did on day one.  My only complaint about this light is that it doesn't have beam cutoff, so I mount it on the handlebars so I can turn it off or cover it on mixed use trails.

I haven't done long randonneuring rides with it, but it keeps my phone, garmin computer and garmin inReach mini fully charged (by judiciously swapping cables) on bike tours, and my phone battery will stay at 100% on 200km daylight rides.  I use SON28 hubs, because they put out a little more power on slower rides.

* My concern about the Ladelux light is the magnetic connector.

SON has a handy connector system now, but they used to have only spade connectors, and they didn't stand up well to repeated removal, so I tried out some handy magnetic connectors from a company called Dyna-Snap.  They worked great - for a little while.  Soon, however, the magnets picked up iron filings in dirt and mud, which interfered with the connection, and required frequent cleaning.  Eventually, though, the zinc (I think it was zinc) coating on the rare earth magnets corroded, and at that point they were useless and went in the trash.  I fervently hope this connector doesn't have the same problem.

Now, in addition to the great SON coaxial adapters, I use Supernova QR gold connectors.  They're awesome.  I’ve never had one fail.  Incidentally, the best tool I've found for crimping them is the Park Tool End Cap Crimping Pliers.

Jan Heine has a detailed review of the Ladelux in the most recent issue of Bicycle Quarterly.

I too have a Sinewave Beacon and one of each of their other products too. (And Sinewave is also a RUSA Advertiser.) Sinewave is basically a one person shop but that person is really nice and will be at the Philly Bike Expo, FWIW.

I think the Sinewave Beacon is a good product. Only downside is that the USB port out the back requires a USB cable with a 90* plug.

But I prefer the standalone Sinewave Revolution which is the standalone USB charger. It's tiny and lightweight and can be placed anywhere.

I've wired it such that the Revolution and the headlight are both wired together into the hub. There's no drag or power decrease to the light when the Revolution is connected if there's no USB device connected so I just unplug whatever is connected when it's dark and I need the headlight. Using the light would prevent charging anyway.

The advantage of this is is that the Revolution + a B&M Headlight is much cheaper than a single headlight with both features integrated. Plus I can change out one of the two components separately.

Jake,
Plus you're a tinkerer! I remember the light strip you made for 2007 PBP.

+1 to Jake’s input. David, from Sinewave is awesome, his products are great and modular, which I like. I move dyne-hub wheel & light set-ups across a few bikes and I like the modular set-up Jake describes. I’ve used it for years without any failure. I highly recommend.

Just a quick note on the Sinewave: As noted above, they do not have a cutoff, which is why Sinewave markets the Beacon as an “Ideal choice for off-road riding.”

The lack of a cut off means the light is quite painful for anyone you’re riding with, especially if your riding partners use a mirror. Many of the Colorado randos use mirrors, and polite lighting is something we’ve discussed.
