Hi , just joined your group and I am an owner of a 1970 Sailstar 26
( orginal bristol) hull#40 which has been in my family since day one.
This is a keel./ center board and I have completely re finished all
the inside wood work and am now completing the outside teak. In case
any one needs a copy I have all the orginal doc's from the MFG and
can scann and share if you would need any. Orginal price was 7223.90
in1970 . Times have changed.

Still have the orginal sails ( just now getting quotes for a new
main) Does anyone have any suggestions on a sail maker? I contacted
Hood, North , Mauri and Peak?
any others?

I  have  always  been  very  happy  with Doyle. My loft  is the  one  in Huntington Long Island, NY-   Mark  Washheim. Even now  that I am in NC I  would  still  go  to  him  when needed.

I bought new sails in 2008 (main and 130 genny) for my 1975 Caravel 22. I used quantum sails. Really great quality for a very good price (offered 10% discount saved about $200 for nothing more then purchasing two sails).

Here is their info:

I have a bristol 32 hull number 165 that has a relatively new mainsail. It has a 3 year old North that the previous owner bought. The top batten is the only one that goes luff to leach. The rest are standard battens and the sail is loose footed. I was told the local loft recommended against full battens for my boat. I never learned why but the sail works pretty nicely and it seems to be very well made.
Good luck with your purchase.

I just picked up a 1970 Sailstar 26 but have not started restorations yet.  If you have an scanned copy of the original docs I would love to get a copy.

Chris, I probably have most documents regarding a Sailstar Bristol 26. I would be pleased to share with you, mine is older, a 1967-68 build according to the paperwork.
She has a fixed fin keel, spade rudder, masthead sloop rig. There is another person on our (this) group who has had their b26 since it was new, he probably can tell you greatly more than I however. Best of luck, I have a source for rudder bearings should you need to replace them, eh? Fair winds then !

Richard,
there are several reasonable sail lofts listed in Good Old Boat. I have just gotten bids of 1500 for the 150% genoa & 1270 for the main. I am looking elsewhere also.   afellow I know in California has taken on making a set of sails from kits bought through SailRight Inc. he and his wife are telling us that it is reasonably well provided with DIY instructions. I feel I can fix a lot of things , but sew a set of sail, my confidence waivers, eh?

Richard, would you have any pictures of your family boat, mate?
I would really like to compare my old 1967-8 Courier to your newer 1970 , if I could see it please.

Hi Rich,
Here are some representative pictures then mate!
1967-68 "B26 Courier".
Deck & cabin house built earlier by Sail-star, mated in '68 to 1968 Bristol hull, which has the Everett Pearson GRP tube supporting a long spade rudder and uses bronze bearings top and below on a bronze rudder shaft. As I mentioned she is a long (fixed)fin keel. She draws some, i stay in 5+' (us feet) of water, for this reason, eh?a fellow on Champlain has a centerboard keeler of very similar appearance , same apx. vintage, he can go where s/v Pretty Girl " has never gone, ( nor shall ever go, hopefully) I suppose you also may do the same as he can do, eh?

I just purchased a 1970 B-26 that needs pretty much everything. I realize this is an old post, but if you could send me whatever you've got scanned I would be very grateful. :)

Here are some files I found . I added the B32 file  since it showed how  the center board worked ( not sure if you have  a full keel or center board/keel)  Good Luck with the project.  I had new main sail made by http://www.waterssails.net/ he might be able to help you with sail / mast measurements

I re did the  cabin and added pictures.  The counter tops were formic and Home Depot sells a paint to re do and it works  great. I used http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/diy/products/finishes/brightside-polyurethane.aspx to  re finsih the fiber glass inside the cabin ( used a sponge roller and tip  it with a paint  brush) Fabric is sunbrella

Good Luck
will be  in two emails due to large file size

Hey Rich !
Many hearty thanks, for the great data & photos
and I hope you et all are having a wonderful holiday season mate !
So great to find this treasure trove of data on my ol lady. She is probably one of the earliest models, but I can find no tag, plate, number anything. Th'ol fellow who owned her for 40 yrs afore me passed on whilst sailing her out on Lk. Superior. so he aint sayin. She has  a very long (8’ long) “fin or skeg keel”, and she draws right at 5‘ draft. So seemingly  deeper than her later sisters, but she  points mighty fine to probably around  low 30s deg. To  weather, Another fellow, several years ago , commented that he’d had a B26 and dreadfully  weather-helmed; I this rig is very adjustable,  I suspect his was  improperly tensioned at the backstay. Causing his dilemma, eh?
On design: Now I'm hoping to speak in person to Halsey Herreshoff, about my boat. She is, I believe, one of only a few early builds, Flushdecked. E.g. has a "flush Deck”, ( no side decks but the cabin  top is flat  ) great footing  to me. One walks easily upon the near 8’ wide deck & can attend to all sail at the mast in safety & confidence, but sadly; she doesn’t look like  newer Bristols at all. Looks more like the original Columbia Defender”
She also has no liner, the cabin overhead is mahogany strips glued onto the fiberglass all cabinets look a lot like yours,  Not so nice looking as yours however, but similar, eh? I shall check home depot for that Formica that looks wonderful.

On the rig: Now one thing I do have, use, & like quite well, is the over/on the boom roller furling. It is so handy when on Superior one needs to reduce sail incrementally. I’ve  read that many dislike the  system, but I  find it  delightful to  use, (except downwind or on a quartering reach) .However a wee bit of patience  will out nicely  in these cases, I find anyway. Then I just  come about, That little bit of  time turning off  is easy and  enjoyable, I have no wish to fight my own sails, eh?  crank 'er down  easily  and resume my  previous heading  but  reefed.
On Sails; I  received a brand spanking new mainsl  the ol fellow who died sailing her had just had made, from LIBERTY SAILS, ,However it is Hi Modulus Dacron,  and so stiff it is like folding sheet metal to  stow it,  So, I am looking for some  4 to 6 oz  sails  , w//less resination  impregnation, eh?

Rich ,
Thanks again, now your brochure lists  an option ,  ;  "geared roller reefing,  That is  what I have and I am  hoping to find  the manufacturer of the unit so as to  buy  spare parts or entire  assembly to cannibalize  when I need  a part for the unit, I know most folks on line  distain the systems but I  conversely greatly enjoy having it, it  still works flawlessly  ( so long as one  comes about into the breeses , of course) Do you know  who made the mast & boom ? possibly "MetalMast" is what I'm thinking  but can find no tags or plates to verify my thoughts, eh?

Richard, the rudder bearing is a standard Cutlass bearing, like one would have for the prop shaft, but a different size. I can gove you some guidance on this repair. We just went thru this on a B30 in the FaceBook group.
