Repost for Andrew Rapoza, rapoza.2025 at gmail.com:

Rick - I just joined the group and thought I'd reach out to you. (1) I have some Pimentel lines and (2) I live next to you in Oak Ridge North (originally from Dartmouth, Mass.; here for 20 years). What's the right way to compare lines?

(I think this is directed at Rick Pimentel)

Hi Andrew,

Is that over by Robinson Road? If so it is just a few miles from me.

There are several lines of Pimentel’s on Sao Miguel and I am not sure just how they may be related. Is there a particular line or area you are searching?

I think we might have a common ancestor I know you were searching Aguiar from Sao Sebastiao in Gintes, I also have an Aguiar from Gintes.

Perhaps we should get together and compare notes.

Rick

Hi Andrew...
Just letting you know that I also have some Pimentels from the island of Sao Miguel in the area of Vila Franca do Campo.  Any of your lines from that area?

Andrew, I have Pimentels from Rosario, Lagoa. See attached.

For what it's worth, I was born in New Bedford and grew up in Dartmouth, MA.
Let me know if you want to compare notes.

Hi, Eliseu.

I'm attaching a report on the descendants of Pedro Esteves Rocha e
Machado, my infamous 17th great-grandfather. His name is sometimes
written as Pedro Esteves da Rocha Machado. He appears to be the head
of the Villa Franca do Campo branch of my ancestors. He must have had
connections in high places, because when he arrived on Sao Miguel he
was given fertile land between two volcanoes on the beach at Agua
d'Alto. He was an ancestor on my Pereira line. My Frias ancestors
were mostly from Rosario, Lagoa, which is not far away.

Do these names ring any bells?

Hi Nancy,

I also descend from Pedro Esteves da Rocha Machado through his grandson Pedro Afonso da Rocha m. to Margarida Afonso.

I descend from two children of Pedro and Margarida: Duarte Pires da Rocha and Isabel Pires.

Hi, Manoel,

I guess that makes Mecia Afonso (the mother) our common ancestor. I
descend from Eva Lopes, daughter of Mecia (the daughter) and Alvaro
Lopes. It's good to find a new cousin.

Hi Nancy - Well, it looks like we are indeed cousins! I am attaching my Rosario Lagoa Pimentel line, which is clearly the same as yours. I have always suspected that the "Bodé" of Frias Bodé was a short-lived nickname assigned to (or taken on by) some members of the family for a generation or two.

Here are my research notes on Bodé: The application of the name "Bodé" to Antonio and his father José change in the records without any clear pattern. That name does not show up in José's christening or marriage record, or in the christening records of his children. However, in the christening records of Antonio's children, Antonio and his father are listed as follows:

Christening - Father's Name - Grandfather's Name
1847 (Maria) - need to recheck (it has been years)
1849 (Margarida) - need to recheck
1851 (Jacintha) - need to recheck
1854 (Roza) - Antonio de Frias - (paterno not listed)
1857 (Manoel) - Antonio de Frias - (paterno not listed)
1862 (Jose) - Antonio de Costa Bodé - José de Frias
1865 (Francisco) - Antonio de Frias Bodé - Jose de Frias Bodé
1867 (Roza) - Antonio de Ferias - Jose de Ferias
1870 (Joao) - Antonio da Costa Frias - José de Frias Bodé
1873 (Luiz) - Antonio de Frias Bodé - Jose de Frias Bodé

The appellation "Bodé" seems to have been applied occasionally and inconsistently to Antonio and to his father Jose, suggesting that its use was more colloquial than formal.

Bodé has several meanings: billy-goat, half-breed, mulatto, ugly man, or Protestant. At this point, it's impossible to guess which of these meanings was being applied to Antonio and José Costa Frias Bodé. The significance and application of this nickname seems to have faded away with the passing of these two generations.

The last few notes are for my 3rd great grandfather, Antonio Costa Frias Bodé, fyi. I interviewed a family member 40 years ago who still remembered him: His occupation: arrieiro (muleteer, driver of pack animals) He drove his donkey cart into the city full of fruit for sale; he also was a farmhand for others. His grandaughter, Maria de Jesus Costa, remembered her grandfather's humble daily routine of coming home at the end of the day, washing his feet, saying his prayers, and going to bed. He was short and had blue eyes, a round face, and red hair.

Hope this isn't TMI!! --Primo Andy

Hi, Andy,

Yes, we are definitely cousins. Our common ancestor appears to be Jose de Frias Bode, although I am descended from his son Francisco from his second marriage to Barbara da Purificacao. I will be traveling for the next couple of days and won't have access to the records on my computer, but I'll send more information when I return.

I already knew the various possible meanings of Bode. The name does seem to be confined to a short time period. My great-grandfather Manoel de Frias and his family were known as Malassada.

I kniw you have at least one other cousin in this group. If my memory is correct, Hermano Pires is also descended from Jose de Frias Bode.

Best wishes from your prima,
Nancy

Shirley A and Joe M,

You guys do realize that this thread is discussing Pimentels from Sao Miguel, right?  You might want to start your own thread called Viera Galvao.  Anyone searching the archive for Viera Galvao will not bother to look at a thread titled Pimentels.  And you'd be missing out on a chance to connect with another cousin! :(

Hi, Joe,

I have him simply as Manuel Vieira in my tree, but he's definitely a Galvao.  So you are also descended from Duarte Galvao.  He's one of my favorite ancestors.

Hi Nancy!
What you sent me is in every book of genealogy :) The descendancy I have
from him takes about 150 paper sheets... I would like to have knowledge of
"real" people :) if you follow me!

Anyway, I will give you access to my tree. You just have to accept the
invitation. I have about 14000 persons related to me. My main area is the
northern part of the island of S. Miguel, the island of Graciosa and
Alentejo in the mainland. Porto Formoso is my most direct concern for now. I
have done all the marriages (which I am step by step adding to the site) and
I am doing the batismos for now. I have finished putting online the
nascimentos and batismos on the first book of baptismos (1692-1791).

Most of the Pimentels in S. Miguel Island, are descendants of the Count of
Benavente. I am searching their ancestry too. I have added some of the
descendants to my tree...

Happy New Year

Did Manuel X Catarina have a daughter by the name of Isabel Vieira Galvao that married Antonio Brandao da Teve on 25 August 1627 in Fenais de Ajuda, Sao Miguel island?
