Does anyone know if there are still people looking for crew positions for crossing in Lanzarote or Gran Canaria. Have 2 smart but inexperienced crew and would like someone with experience to jump on, too. Headed for Turks, then Cuba, when this darned weather eases.

We have had a few people looking for crew positions in the last week or so here in Arricefe, but didn't keep details as we are not planning on taking crew, Not sure about experience that they had

The facebook page is Atlantic Ocean. Crew.
We are in Las Palmas but we had to wait on anchor for a place as there is a waiting list. We visited the office every day gently gently. The anchorage brings in a swell in SE and is quite uncomfortable but tenable....

Are there alternatives to Las Palmas?
I see a couple of marinas at the bottom of the island. Are they possible?
Every time I try to google the island, I get bombarded with ads for hotel rooms in marinas and i can't get a picture of what these marinas offer.

Puerto Mogan is an alternative but you need to check there's space and book a berth.
Puerto de Pasito Blanco is also an alternative but nowhere to provision locally and again you need to book a berth.
Both these are more expensive than Las Palmas.
I have heard that Santa Cruz Tenerife is a good alternative to Las Palmas but no experience as not been there yet.

Terry,
I have visited both Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan. They are marinas in holiday villages. I would not choose to provision at either of them.

I agree, the S of gran canaria is one big tourist trap - the weather is good most of the time, that explains a lot. But expensive and really bad for provisioning.
Las Palmas marina is the least expensive I have visited, plenty of chandleries next to the marina, and supermarkets deliver to your boat for free. There is often a bit of a wait to get in though as the marina is huge and run by the goverment and very bureaucratic (read slow) , but we anchored only one night outside of the marina and then we got a berth in the small marina Vela Latina next to the main marina.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is great for provisioning and a nice city to go explore; authentic canarian style compared to the S of tenerife, for the same reasons as gran canaria. The marina is not too big, nice and relaxed, quite friendly and not expensive but not cheap neither.

We also stayed in Santa Cruz, Tenerife in 2015 and found the provisioning there really good. There are a couple of chandler's up in the town that we managed to purchase most of the courtesy flags that are required for the Caribbean and they were very cheap compared to what we were paying in the Med.

Cheers from us still Sailing on Annecam
