Is anyone interested in carpooling to the show?  I am currently planning on driving up early on Saturday, spending 6 hours or so doing laps  and returning later that same day.

The weather forecast is calling for cold, but clear skies (at least for now).

I'd ask to split gas/tolls and yack about flyfishing during the drive in exchange for the ride up and down.

If there are more than 4 (me + 3), I can take my wife's minivan (me + up to 5 comfortably, 6 in the rear seats if you don't mind being cozy or are skinny).

Vic,
I could do with a road trip.  I see where parts of NJ got 12-15 inches out of this mess but the weekend forecast looks good for that area. What would you expect - about a 4hr drive.  I live in the Mt Vernon area - where would we meet up?  Leaving out at 0dark30?

How early would you want to leave?  It is about a 4 hour drive.

The show starts at 8:30 in the morning.  I can meet you anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 am - that way we can be there NLT 10:30.  I figure after 4-6 hours of looking around, casting a few rods, seeing what free stuff we can pick up and buying one or two things, it'll be time to get back on the road.

If we leave between 2:30 and 4:30, we'll still be back before it gets too late.

I recommend we meet at the parking lot near the Tyson's Corner Orvis (off Route 7 before the intersection of 123) - I'll be coming from Reston so that is mostly halfway for both of us.

Let me know how early you want to leave.  I'll PM you my cell number.

If anyone else still wants to join - please chime in

FWIW, gents, you may want to consider driving about 15 miles and 15 minutes farther to save big time on tolls, http://goo.gl/maps/uLinR. DC to via I-270 to Frederick - via US 15 thru Gettysburg to Camp Hill/Harrisburg - I-81 /I-78 to and thru the Lehigh Valley to I-287 in Jersey.

This is the route we ALWAYS take to and from Rockville to visit family in Jersey.  Only toll will be coming back over the Big D in Easton PA. Plus if you want to divert and look at fishable waters in PA during pit stops, this is a pretty good way to go. ;-)

You've blown the secret surprise, Bruce. ;-)  Exit 29A Rt. 61.  Another reason, in retrospect, why I shouldn't have moved to the DC area. ;-)

I highly recommend to anyone overnighting at the Somerset show check out Sonesta Suites about a half mile from the convention center.  Melody and I (and the kiddos) have been traveling to the show for the past 5 years and that place is by far the best bang for the buck.  2 Bedroom Suites, full furnished kitchen, and a short drive or reasonable walk to the show.  Great breakfast too!  I have absolutely no ties to them and no commercial interest, just want to pass along to the group since some of you all are planning to head up.

To not break the commercial rule, I'll keep things in broader, non-specific terms.

I thought there were a few less vendors/exhibitors there compared to last year's show, but the ones I wanted to see where there and I got to swing a bunch of flyrods in a relatively close time period to make comparisons in my mind - and really change the direction I thought I was going in (I am looking for a new 5 wt) for the better.  I guess times are still tough for some in the industry (even the vendors that were there this and last year seemed to down size or even share booths - where last year there were some ginormous stands - nothing wrong with being more efficient).

There were also a bunch of new tools on the market that are advertised in internet land - but seeing and handling them at the show helped understand whether it was just hype or if they offer improvements to the way I currently get things done.

Oh and stopping by Cabelas did not hurt either

Nice.  I have never been to one and I plan on attending the one in PA on March 1st, so I just wanted to get a feel for it.  Did you stay for if4?

No - I'll try to hit it when it comes down here.  More fun with people you know.

If you haven't gone before, it will be really cool (LOTS of stuff to see).
