Hello  Nick.
I’ve twice submitted my SAW Swift Walks in Shipston on Stour, but they still don’t appear on the listing! 😩  What do I need to do to make them materialise?🤔

Hello Nick, I have dreamt up a game and activities for children and
their teachers / minders to do for SAW; here they are:

Dress up as a Swift and enact migration down Europe and through Africa
out on the playground "flying" over country after country and ending up
over the Congo and then coming back again. Looking at all the countries
they fly over and finding out about them, their peoples, cultures and
their wildlife (briefly!)

Watching tiny flying insects with magnifying glasses and realising
that's what Swifts eat and ID'ing them.

Looking for Swifts over the school yard. Going to a nearby reservoir or
gravel pit or a big flat bit of the Thames and watching Swifts feed and
drink at teatime.

Drawing Swifts, Matins & Swallows, making Swift models from wool and
toilet roll middles and string and glue and paint  and papier mache!
Wonderfully messy!

What do you think?

All the best, Edward
Nick Brown <brown...@gmail.com>: May 13 05:37PM +0100

Great ideas Edward thanks.
We certainly need to engage children as much as possible so more SAW events
like Amandas aimed at kids would be great!

Hi Talya

If you’re not monitoring the 9 sites each year, then yeah, I’d say Swiftmapper is the right site for you i.e. to update records as and when you see Swifts go into a property in the street or streets nearby.

Laurinda

P.S. I was out cycling at lunchtime in Bedford and saw a swift entering a property along a road where there’s a known colony. Just lucky! I’ll log that one on Swiftmapper.

Thanks Laurinda,

I'm not sure if it's appropriate, could you tell me?

There are 9 known natural nests hereabouts, and an unknown number of unknown ones, all in the streets nearby, and we don't know how far the area stretches. I'm sure it's a colony or a group of colonies as far as the Swifts are concerned, but then isn't everywhere? And we have Swiftmapper for that? If the criteria is monitoring, we don't formally monitor other than a swift walk every year, and recording on swiftmapper.

I think we get the same bunch of screamers going between them all. We have a WhatsApp group so we can tell each other how many we spot when and where, but of course it's still difficult to tell!

It's really interesting when we see a much larger group of swifts, higher above, all circling and screaming to each other. This tends to happen when the second wave arrives, but I also saw it on a smaller scale yesterday, so I don't know what that was about. I presumed it was groups of nearby groups all communicating with each other, but maybe it was just swifts passing overhead for another reason. Although when that happens it looks more like a steady stream all going in the same direction.

Best wishes,
Talya

Hi Barbara,
As part of our Swifts in Cardiff Bay project, I produced a school pack.
Unfortunately it didn't get finished. However we trialled some of the
activities with local primary schools. The migration game went well
(although it was a little boisterous). You're welcome to lift anything that
you might find useful. Check the copyright however, I had permission to use
the RSPB items at the time but that was for that specific project.
Have you seen our knitted Swift? We use it to take around primary schools.

Chris Batey <chris....@gmail.com>: May 13 06:50AM -0700

Apologies if this post has already gone out once before (my first attempt
appeared not to work).

We are carrying out some RSPB research this summer, testing methods for
detecting occupancy of artificial swift nest sites (nest boxes and swift
bricks) including thermal cameras.

This work will inform the survey design for a citizen science national
survey of swift occupancy of artificial nest sites which we hope to roll
out in 2026, funding permitting. That survey will then improve our
understanding of the factors influencing swift occupancy of artificial nest
sites which will allow us to better advocate for them being provided in
optimal locations for swifts in the future.

For this season, it is proving difficult to find suitable study sites with
swift bricks which are already being used by breeding swifts. If anyone has
access to or knows of good sites where swifts are nesting in swift bricks
(we require sites with 10s of nests rather just single nests in bricks) -
please get in touch with me as we would potentially be interested in
carrying out thermal camera surveys there this June/July.

I am based in Lincolnshire so sites in the counties surrounding Lincs would
be optimal, but this is not essential, so do please get in touch beyond
that area if there is a site with a large number of swifts breeding in
bricks.

Thanks in advance,
Chris Batey

Banstead Swifts <banstea...@gmail.com>: May 13 09:51AM +0100

Dear all

Following on from Hannah's article in the news regarding potential row back
on making swift bricks compulsory on new builds, I share our local council
let down:

You may recall Barry and I joined the Leader of Reigate and Banstead (R&B)
Council on a zoom, some months ago. We requested that swift bricks be a
requirement in all new builds and extensions, public, private, commercial
builds.

We were offered swift bricks to be added as an advisory to every letter
that approved planning, with immediate effect. We accepted that as a start.

Since then I have emailed three times requesting a copy of the document as
I had been invited to. No responses were received.

Last Saturday I was involved in guiding R&B councillors, one being on the
planning committee, on a walk around the local farm to garner support for
protecting nature and crops.

I happened to mention the above and he said no advisory had been added and
that he knew nothing about it.

I feel incandescent. We will start again, but the level of administration
and communication is appalling.

Separate to this, the swift bricks that were due to be fitted to Raven
Housing Trust in the Banstead Swift Colony have been delayed for a year due
to external major work that will need to happen late summer. This was
justified but hugely disappointing.

*The good news: *

6 swifts out of 8 are back so far. 2 were seen going into 1 nest. They are
our joy. Now we wait to see if we will have any new nesters in the 10
vacant nest boxes.

Helen Lucy's beautiful swift leaflets have been so well recieved on the 2
walks I shared them out on. Thanks so much.

Have a super week.

Kindest
Annie & Barry

Hi again

*The 28th of June* may seem a long way off but *UK SAW 2025* (28 June to 6
July) will be upon us much quicker than you think!
So do please *get some more events organised *and send me the details asap.
To date we have *just 21 events* organised so I'm hoping that there are
many more in the pipeline? There were 80 last year.
(Note that the RSPB will be unwilling to support and promote SAW again
unless we can demonstrate quickly that more events are taking place).

See the list of events already organised on AfS's blog: Action for Swifts:
SAW events 2025 <https://actionforswifts.blogspot.com/p/saw-events.html> .

The format I need is similar to this:

6 July London SW12. A swift walk starting at 8pm outside the Red Lion pub
at LN12 3GH. Free but booking required:
andysw...@gmail.com <andysw...@gmail.com> or see
Saveourlocalswifts.co.uk <http://Saveourlocalswifts.blogspot.com> .

*Hope to hear from you all soon (and thanks to everyone whose events are
already listed)! *

Cheers
