Thanks, Dick - nice to hear from you.

Not sure of the "type" of brick, but photo attached.  Lots used by HS initially early in the season, but opening just too small for SG.  To have 100% brick occupancy on the Estate by Swifts is pretty good, I think.

Just to share the joy of D&G swift networks 1st ever public event .. a wonderful day for swifts at the Moniaive festival yesterday.. golden swifts in the endangered species parade … real swifts started with 2 responding to our swift caller in the morning… we were alongside Antoine Lemmare from the Galloway & South Ayrshire Biosphere & Malcolm Haddow from SWSEIC … many long swift swallow and Martin conversations with very interesting visitors …. finished the day with hosting a public join us for a ‘swift walk’ & saw 3 in the air almost immediately then 4 then 5 and finished with a screaming party of 5 of possibly 6 around the hotel & 2 swifts entering nest holes to put the icing on the cake! … happy days & more to come
May all your events be as successful

Morning all

Having difficulty replying from within the group to specific requests. Just joined and not sure if I'm going through the "right motions".

HB-T asked for information on the use of Swift bricks. On the North Milton Estate in New Milton, Hampshire, Hampshire Swifts have been surveying the breeding bird colony since 2020 (not a complete survey that year).

I attach, for all to see, our report from 2024 and it shows the use being made of the artificial spaces installed by New Forest District Council following a local protest, when existing holes/nest sites were blocked for renovations in 2011/2012. The subsequent uptake has been amazing - 71 apparently occupied Swift nests in 2024 and, most important 100% occupancy of the Swift bricks.

100% occupancy is amazing.  We need to learn from this.  What was key to this do you think ? Also is there a central resource where this kind of information is kept.
If not I expect Hannah is collecting all examples so I might have the best resouce if it can be shared when completed.

Hi All

The idea behind the new Swift colony app is that this could be shared across all the SLN for recording large colonies and monitoring them year on year.

Please do give this app a try and let Camilla and Jon Barlow know your thoughts/comments.

Does this include groups of small colonies? Is there a link for the app? I've never heard of it before.

Hi Talya

This is a private app, kindly created for the SLN by Dave Kilby out of his own love for swifts.

Sorry, I should have enclosed this later set of instructions created by Camilla, which has a web link. She has also set up the following email address for any questions: swiftch...@gmail.com.

Bedfordshire Swifts paid the first annual fee last year to use the Coreo platform (the same as is used by Swift Mapper), but obviously this app didn’t have the same level of developer time, so isn’t as polished as SM.

It was created initially for public buildings with large colonies e.g. churches (Dick’s list of churches are logged on there), hospitals, libraries. But there’s no reason why it couldn’t be used for a named community group of small colonies which is being monitored.

Take a look and see what you think.

Swift Colony App, Churches and Public Buildings V4.docx

Thanks Laurinda,

I'm not sure if it's appropriate, could you tell me?

There are 9 known natural nests hereabouts, and an unknown number of unknown ones, all in the streets nearby, and we don't know how far the area stretches. I'm sure it's a colony or a group of colonies as far as the Swifts are concerned, but then isn't everywhere? And we have Swiftmapper for that? If the criteria is monitoring, we don't formally monitor other than a swift walk every year, and recording on swiftmapper.

I think we get the same bunch of screamers going between them all. We have a WhatsApp group so we can tell each other how many we spot when and where, but of course it's still difficult to tell!

It's really interesting when we see a much larger group of swifts, higher above, all circling and screaming to each other. This tends to happen when the second wave arrives, but I also saw it on a smaller scale yesterday, so I don't know what that was about. I presumed it was groups of nearby groups all communicating with each other, but maybe it was just swifts passing overhead for another reason. Although when that happens it looks more like a steady stream all going in the same direction.

Best wishes,
Talya

Hi Talya

If you’re not monitoring the 9 sites each year, then yeah, I’d say Swiftmapper is the right site for you i.e. to update records as and when you see Swifts go into a property in the street or streets nearby.

Laurinda

P.S. I was out cycling at lunchtime in Bedford and saw a swift entering a property along a road where there’s a known colony. Just lucky! I’ll log that one on Swiftmapper.
