Hello – a cheeky request really, but has anyone created a presentation for a primary school audience? I would welcome any tips or materials if you are willing/able to share!  I am happy to share anything at all that Brecon Swift group has or does of course!

Second year that ‘our’ three eaves nests are empty. Two on another house are occupied though. Holding my nerve and getting my caller ready!

Thank you all very much,

Barbara

Hi Barbara,
As part of our Swifts in Cardiff Bay project, I produced a school pack. Unfortunately it didn't get finished. However we trialled some of the activities with local primary schools. The migration game went well (although it was a little boisterous). You're welcome to lift anything that you might find useful. Check the copyright however, I had permission to use the RSPB items at the time but that was for that specific project.
Have you seen our knitted Swift? We use it to take around primary schools.

This all looks great Alan! I’ve saved it for when I next get involved with a school. 😊

Hi Barbara

I use Helen Lucy’s lovely Children’s Swift Flier, which Helen kindly said all the SLN groups can use.

And the enclosed Oxford Swift Project cut-out.

Alan - these look great. I have also saved them for use with Harwell Swifts events for the children as we didn’t haven’t any material.
Thanks again for sharing.

Here in Kent we are also just starting to work in primary schools and therefore thinking about appropriate learning activities given the pressures on the curriculum. I have a background as a primary teacher, head and local government school adviser although I am bit out of touch now ........but old habits re advising on lesson planning die hard.

I think it would really help teachers to fit Swift related work into their busy schedules if we can relate it to the National Curriculum for them. There will be links into language work, maths and art work depending on the activities but the key subject will be Science at each key stage. At Key Stages one and two, children are required to know about life cycles, animals and their habitats. A study of Swifts could very address these attainment targets.

Suggested learning outcomes for a short project could be: (1)  For the pupils to understand the life cycle of the Common Swift (2) For pupils to understand the ways that the life cycle of the Common Swift has evolved to suit its aerial habitat (3) for pupils to understand what  the Common Swift needs to survive and the dangers it faces.

For Key Stage 2 pupils there is also some support in a Swift project for the Geography program of study in which pupils are expected to be able to use maps and globes.

Just a few thoughts.......
