Opening Denoised DNG Files from Canon R6 Mark II in PTGui

I am experiencing an issue with PTGui and require your assistance to resolve it. I have captured high ISO images with my Canon R6 Mark II and applied denoise corrections in Lightroom, resulting in DNG files. My objective was to open these denoised DNG files in PTGui for stitching purposes.

On my first attempt, PTGui requested information regarding the camera’s sensor size and pixel details. Unsure of the exact specifications at the time, I opted to cancel the dialog and search for the information online. Upon returning and attempting to reopen the files in PTGui, I was met with an “Unexpected error occurred” message. It is worth noting that I can open the original CR3 Canon RAW files in PTGui without issues; however, my aim is to utilize the denoised DNG files to achieve the best results.

For comparison, I have also processed images from my Canon R5, applying the same denoising process in Lightroom and generating DNG files, all of which PTGui handled seamlessly. This situation suggests that the issue could be specific to the Canon R6 Mark II files.

In an effort to resolve this, I have tried uninstalling PTGui, removing all associated appdata, and reinstalling, but the issue persists.

Any ideas on how I can resolve this issue?

Coincidentally this is one of the things that has been fixed in PTGui
12.23, which was just released. Please give it a try.

Good news is that is does "blow up" anymore. The sad news is I still get an error message for any of my R6 mark II DNG images.

Also, I went back and tried to open the R5 files DNG I tested with before and they work fine. As an additional test I open Canons EOS R DNG files, those also received the same error message as the R6 Mark II images.

I take that back, the EOS R images appeared to have worked. It's just the EOS R6 Mark II DNG images that are the problem.

Additional Information: According to Joost Nieuwenhuijse, this issue was fixed in PTGui 12.23, which I have downloaded and installed.

These are bracketed HDR/Panorama images shot with the Canon R6 Mark II at a high ISO. Here's my process:

I use the LR denoise feature until the detail panel and create a DNG file for each of the images.
I use the LR HDR feature to create a "merged" DNG file for each set of bracketed shots.
I load the resulting merged DNG images into PTGui.
I attempted to load my denoised DNG files from the Canon R6 Mark II, and the good news is that PTGui no longer crashes when I load the images. However, the bad news is that I received a "LibRaw error: Unsupported File Format or not a Raw File."

I tried using the DNGs created in step 1 (denoised bracketed images), and those loaded successfully, producing a merged HDR/panorama image.

I repeated the same test with some Canon R5 images, and I encountered the same problem. In other words, I could use the images created in step 1 (denoised bracketed images), but not the images created in step 2 (merged HDR images from LR).

To summarize, it appears that regardless of which camera's images I am processing (Canon R6 Mark II or Canon R5) through PTGui, I can successfully use the DNG denoised bracketed images. However, I receive the "LibRaw error: Unsupported File Format or not a Raw File" error when attempting to use the denoised merged HDR images created using Lightroom's "merge images to HDR" feature.

Indeed. DNG is a container format which supports several kinds of data
and encodings. Lightroom recently seems to have started outputting DNG
files with embedded JpegXL data. This is not supported currently by PTGui.

I don't have LR at hand at the moment, but you might check if it has a
compatibility option for disabling JpegXL compression.

Adding support for jpegxl compression within DNG is one of the many
things that's on the wish list for a future version.

So the Denoised DNG works because it doesn't contain the JPEGXL embedded image but the HDR DNG does?

Yes I think so. If PTGui can open it then it doesn't use JpegXL compression.

Support for JpegXL encoded DNG files was added to PTGui 12.24, so your
files should work now.
