Hi everyone

I'm having problems with syncing which will become clear shortly!

My office does not allow MLO access to the firewall for security reasons (blah blah blah) so I was trying to work out another way to sync to my office laptop.  The goal was to create a backup from my phone and email it to my work email account, then save that file and open it in MLO on the office laptop.  However, when trying this the phone emailled an MLObak file and I received "Could not open this file: Invalid file format" error message when trying to open it.  Is there something I'm doing wrong?  I'm trying to backup from my android phone and open the backup in MLO windows.

Thank you!

Hi, Rob. The reason that you could not get that to work is because it
does not work - the file formats are different on phone and Windows.
Have you considered trying wifi sync?

Yup, I wanted to but the office laptop is locked down for wifi access...

So is there no way to extract the file from the phone to the cloud that a pc can read?  That is totally annoying.  My only option would be to extract the file from my home computer, send it to my work email then restore from that?  If I remember and if I go on my home computer everyday...  Does that sound about right?

That's about the length of it, Rob, while your well-meaning but misinformed IT department thinks that locking out WiFi access will make very much difference to your company's network security.

One other option: Can you take your office laptop home, put it on a wired connection to your home broadband and use online sync from there?

Your only other option is to persuade Andrey to provide you with a utility to convert Android MLO.bak files to MLO Windows files.

I think that open file formats are important for making sure that your data doesn't get locked up in a proprietary software ecosystem. One of the things which attracted me to MLO was the availability of the data in xml, which should be easy to convert and present on different systems - although the truth hasn't turned out quite as simple.

If you can use a USB Stick then you could use the portable version with a file on that. Basically copy the MLO exe to the Stick and run it from there, synchronising a local .mlo file.

Or even simpler, move your home computer MLO data file to the USB Stick and use it from there at both locations.

Rob,

Just another voice added to the previous replies:

Like you, I have a tightly controlled computer at work. No Internet or network access. Here's what I do:

I keep a copy of my desktop .mlo file on a USB stick. I then plug this into my work computer and do a quick (5 seconds) MLO file sync. The option for setting that up is "Sync to other data file located on my computer, flash drive or LAN" in the Sync Profile dialog. I then unplug the USB stick and work with the local (sync target) copy. Before leaving the office I sync to the stick again and bring it home. Another sync on my home computer from the stick and I'm good to go at home again. Once the home file is sync'd, Cloud Sync automatically pushes/pulls everything between my home desktop and my phone.

It sounds awfully awkward and convoluted when it's written down, but once you get into the rhythm it all works really well and is quite quick. As a by-product, I have three separate copies (backups in different locations) of my MLO file: home, office and (encrypted) USB stick. Also, if I'm ever stuck somewhere that's not home or office, I have a copy on my USB stick that goes with me everywhere. Any questions about the setup, or things that might be a deal breaker for you, please ask. I've got a few workarounds for some of the inevitable little snags with this setup.

You could of course work directly on the USB stick with MLO.exe installed on that. You could then use any computer whether it had MLO installed or not.
However one place I work doesn't allow access to the USB ports either! So that's when the iPad version comes in handy.
