I was surprised today to discover workspaces are a new feature in MLO Android, that's just amazing and great example of why MLO is the best at so much of everything they do for task management!

I don't see anything on how to use in the message boards, am I missing something?

I'm struggling a bit with using. Any tips?

Thanks for awesome software!!

I'm excited too but the app crashes when I try to make a new workspace. Does it work for you? I can find no information about this anywhere. There are other new features which came at the same time (as detailed on Google Play).

I'm sure we will hear more soon.

OK crashes are solved now.

But what if I want to rename a Workspace?

It misses this...

At least it works.

Now I'm interested in advice on how to use this additional power. When to use views and when to use workspaces. Maybe workspaces are more temporary, structures built on views.

Anybody any thoughts? Perhaps this was discussed in relation to the Windows version.

If I recall correctly, a workspace is a layer over a view that remembers which task is currently selected, and also remembers currently zoom-in status. And there may have been another thing. Maybe it was the expanded/collapsed status if the branches in the outline.

Thanks, Dwight, that makes sense. What is actually happening at the moment is unclear. I am still experimenting with this feature.

For me they should retain the view you have setup.. but as a default. To be clear if I setup a workbook that shows me tasks due next 7 days for a particular project, then, no matter how I change that view in the workbook, when I open it again, I should get my default view again...

At the moment what I see is that the last used view is retained - have I missed something?

The same happens to me, it seems to do nothing at all. We have to wait for the next update, I guess.

Hi, Laurence & Mark.
I would be skeptical about just waiting for a new release. I'm guessing that if you want this changed you have to document very clearly how you want it to work and why the current way of working is not good.

I suspect that suggestions to change how workspaces function would tend to be more acceptable if the proposed functionality corresponds closely to current MLO functionality on other platforms. Currently, on MLO/Windows, a workspace remembers the last-used view (the same as the current functionality of Android that you don't like). If you want a certain workspace to always remember a certain default view, then on Windows you have to lock the workspace, which prohibits view changes as well as various other changes like zoom. If you try to make a change that's prevented by the workspace lock, MLO will create a new workspace and allow the change there, while preserving the original workspace unchanged. Advantage, it allows you to set up a workspace with various defaults and know that they will always be there. Disadvantages: It can feel very restricted to be working in a locked workspace. If MLO switches you to a new workspace in order to allow changes, it can feel like a disruption or interruption of your work. And over time unless you are good at housekeeping, you can accumulate a lot of abandoned ad-hoc workspaces.

Does this sound like something you would like to request?

Dwight,

With the desktop I use that functionality a lot, I have certain Workspaces that are setup as default to a certain view, so I know I can just jump into them, and others I allow to be flexible.

So yes, really that's what I'd be after - although I suspect with the mobile version I am likely to use the fixed default workspaces more often..

So, there is now a pending request to add "locked workspace" functionality to MLO v2 for Android. If anyone wants to express their support or opposition or make any changes or suggestions please get them in within the next week. After that I will bring this request to the beta forum. This does not guarantee that the devs will like it or implement it but its a step. -Dwight

After further testing, I found that the workspace content needs to be set up *after* the workspace is created. MLO then remembers the view, and which record is highlighted.

So it is functional. No need to wait for an update.

Hi Laurence, for me I can setup the workspace, change to another one and have my last view. But if while I am in that workspace I decide to look at my inbox for example when I come back to that workspace then it's the inbox I see.

How I would like it to work is for example I setup a workspace called 'project X next due next 7 days' and I setup a the view in that workspace to show me that. I would like to set that as a default. So that either as Dwight says with MLO windows it won'the let me change the view or I can change it but next time I navigate away and come back it shows me Project X Due Next 7 days again. Not the inbox because I had last looked that.

I am not saying what we have now is not useful. Because I can be working in two workspaces, but for me it would be much more useful to have the default locked for a workspace. I can work with views anyway. But because they allow us to name the workspace I had assumed that was the intention.

Are you able to make sure your workspace always shows you the same view then? Have I missed something?

Hi Mark

No, exactly the same happens to me. If I look at the Inbox the workspace loses what I had set. It is possible to set up a scratch workspace to go to before switching to another view but this is awkward. I agree with Dwight's suggestion of being able to lock workspaces. I am still not sure of how to use the power of it, it seems very similar to views. But the more power and options, the better.
