Hello MLUG,

I know this is a longshot but has anyone on this list played with a
'miracast' device. It's used for mirroring your screen wirelessly over
WIFI. Better than chromecast, this should show up as another screen and
mirrors the whole screen, whereas chromecast you share a link with it
and the device plays the URL. Big difference there.

Anyway I brought a "Measy Miracast A2W Ezcast" from Dicksmith they are
$53.

I've tried gnome-network-displays and I've also tried miraclecast has
anyone got any experience with setting these up?

Hi Michael,

I used one, but only for Windows :( never tried in Linux.

Its quite an open standard, so actual quality can vary greatly- wifi antenna quality etc. I used the official Microsoft Wireless Adapter. Its Microsoft's generic Miracast device - nothing windows specific.

Zak,

Your right the standard is pretty loose. It's a pity it isn't easy under
Linux. It looks like people have it working and I think I'm close as it
seems to talk to the unit and and it flicks the TV to black for a few
seconds when it tries to connect. I think I'm really close, but who
knows with these problems.

I specifically brought a "Measy Miracast A2W Ezcast" as it was on the
tested list of gnome-network-displays.

Anyway there is no rush now to get this working. If anyone ever gets one
of these working under linux let me know how you did it as it looks like
a good alternative to expensive boxes. Although I think the latency of
these compared to a dedicated HDMI wireless transmitter will be poor,
but those are around $450 and we are talking $53 here.

Have you tried just using a Pi? There’s also projects on Linux side like miracle cast

... weren't we talking about the USB Pilot at one point to do rPi-based physical KVM? Wouldn't that do what you want? or am I confusing things?

We were talking about IP KVM's. I'm going to build the pi kvm, I've
ordered the parts. That however is for something completely
different. I'm going to use the pi kvm for remotely controlling my
servers. What I want to use the Miracast for is casting a computer
screen wirelessly to a larger screen across a room and then sit at the
wireless screen with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and use the
computer. It's a crazy idea I know and most likely it would have too
much latency to be usable and I don't like bluetooth either.

The problem came about for all the wrong reasons. A clients remote
working desk is too small for his notebook and a large 24in screen, so
he wanted to leave his notebook on the otherside of the room and
wirelessly send the screen to the larger monitor on the small desk to
work. So we brought the miracast in the hope that it might work, but
it's too difficult to setup so we've had to rearrange the furniture
again and get a bigger desk.

I still wouldn't mind getting the miracast working as it would be handy
for presentations in the boardroom at work or something like that.

I've given miraclecast a little bit of go but the documentation is a bit
lacking I find. I'm not quite sure what a 'sink' and 'peer' are and how
to go about sinding my notebook screen to this setup.

Sink is just a fancy word for saying receiver..

In computing, a sink, event sink or data sink is a class or function designed to receive incoming events from another object or function.”

Why not just have them hdmi connect then? Can easily just drop the laptop down next to tv?

The latency may annoy you too much for any real working use long term. Only really good for like video or something where latency doesn’t matter.

They have rearrange the desk so they can do just that. I think the desk
was just really small, haven't seen it myself because of COVID rules.

I never used the miracast before but I was thinking the latency would be
bad.

He's sorted the problem now by moving furniture again.

Cheers for your input, I think I'll just leave this device alone for
now until it becomes easier to install and I have a more suitable case
for using it.

I know this is a Linux group, but any windows user would probably have zero issues with it, and should probably find one for “recycling” it.
