I will be heading to fletchers Monday after work around 4pm and staying a few hours. If anybody wants to join, let me know. It is my first attempt for shad.
Any recommendations for a good spot to try from shore?
Mauro.

If your not using a boat i would either go just down river of fletchers where the river narrows down (just be careful about walking on the mud.  You sink in!)or  you can take the wooded path up stream until you reach a "Sandbar"  and stand on some rocks or go more even more upriver to Chainbridge itself where the river narrows down again.  If your interested in going again on Tuesday, I would be more than happy to go with you and show you around.

Thanks for the tip. I have only a few hours today, and may be Wednesday.

Hey Brian,

Don't know yet but I am open to the idea.  I am off from Thursday to Tuesday this week so I plan to do a lot of fishing during that time.  I just have to see how often I can fish without my wife asking for a divorce.  ;)  I think Saturday might me a hard day since that is her day off, however maybe another day could work for me.  I will keep you informed.

not much to report. had to be back home by 6, so I opted for fishing for shore. Walked to the point downstream of fletcher's and could not really cast out in the current. At one point I've got tangled on my backcast, and when I went to retrieve the fly, I was hissed by a goose in her nest. Really did not want to piss her off while standing on slippery rocks in my waders.
I fished for about one hour, got tangled on the bottom 30 times, losing 3 or 4 flies.
Looking forward to go back this weekend on a boat.
I am new to fly fishing and this was the most frustrating experience so far.
People on boats did not seem to be doing much better while I was there, only saw a few fish come up.
Mauro.

Sardman - I'm pretty sure that happens to everyone, don't sweat it.  Especially when you are just trying out a new spot -- if you think fishing is rough at a new spot, try bike commuting a new route for the first time!  That's always a learning experience  ;).

One of the great things about tying your own flies is that you can not worry so much about losing them in trees and the bottom.  I probably lose between 5-10 flies on any given day of fishing.  If you are snagging the bottom that's good -- at least you know you're working the water deep.

The other day I was swinging soft hackles (my favorite flies) for trout and noticed I wasn't snagging, so I casted more "across" instead of "downward" and did a mend (get the fly to sink) and the next swing I hung up/broke off-- but after I tied on the new one I casted a *bit more downstream and had a take.  So it seems to work.  Rich from Urban was telling me about this for using a full sinking line for shad, but it seemed to work well in this instance too.

I figure that I can learn something on almost any trip -- you probably learned one place where you definitely can't backcast and also about how much weight you need to hit bottom in that spot ;).  And I'm sure you learned paths to fishing spots and got more familiar with your gear -- that's always good.

Excellent point Gene.  One thing I have to remember as I compare my personal fishing experiences with the blogs I read and the posts here is that, to paraphrase Steve Furtick, you cannot compare your behind-the-scenes to everyone else's highlight reel, otherwise you will wind up frustrated.
