DSO Observations - Cancelled DSOs

These are our observations from reviewing the microfilm containing Ford Domestic Special Orders (DSOs) placed by Shelby American for 1967 model year cars.

Specifically, this post will itemize all the DSOs that were canceled and attempt to explain the reason why.

Total DSOs canceled: 28  (24 were for G.T. 500 cars and 4 were for G.T. 350 cars)

     2502 403F      2507 401F      2510 411F      2519 401F

     2520 403F      2522 411F      2523 413F      2529 401F

     2531 403F      2533 411F      2535 413F      2537 401F

     2553 401F      2554 401F      2559 403F      2564 411F

     2565 411F      2570 413F      2577 411F      2578 413F

Of the twenty (20) canceled ordered for GT500+AC cars:

  • Four (4) of them (2519, 2520, 2522, 2523) were canceled on Sep.27, 1966.
  • The remaining sixteen (16) were all canceled on Feb.6, 1967.

DSOs canceled due to attempted change to total unit quantity: 4

*Four (4) DSOs were canceled most likely because SAI attempted to change the total unit quantity on these orders.

2513 402F      2514 412F      2518 400F      2521 410F
It is possible that these four DSOs were canceled because the attempted change to the total unit quantity would have undoubtedly caused a problem with item numbers already assigned to the units on subsequent DSOs. The change notices were typed between September 1-9, 1966, and all were stamped 'Received' on Sep. 28, 1966. They were all canceled a couple weeks later on Oct.17, 1966. A note on the cancellation memo indicated they'd be rescheduled for November production on new DSOs being submitted.

The November re-orders appear to adjust quantity based off demand and split up each original order over four separate orders (one for Black trim, one for Black trim with AM radio, one for Parchment trim and one for Parchment trim with AM radio).  Guessing that DSO 2513 was re-ordered as DSOs 2555-2558, 2514 as 2549-2552., 2514 as DSOs 2566-2569, 2518 as DSO 2549-2552, and 2521 as DSOs 2560-2563.

Canceled DSOs for first emissions equipped G.T. 350 cars: 3

2582 202F      2583 203F      2584 212F

These three (3) canceled orders were for the 'new' 289 hi-po emissions engine. All three were subsequently re-ordered with the same options minus the emissions on DSOs 2586, 2587 and 2588. It appears that the 'new GT350 Thermactor engine' just wasn't going to be ready for at least another month. The first GT350s with emissions weren't built by SJ  until 5/16/67.

Canceled DSOs for other reasons: 1

2579 200F

This DSO attempted to order a car without power steering or power brakes. It appears the manual steering would have been acceptable, however, handwritten engineering notes on the order state "manual disc brakes are not available - no master cylinder or brake pedal available for this installation". The unit requested by this canceled order was reordered on DSO 2589.
