Gernot, visiting from Thailand, wanted to buy my H-bars, so we met at
RBW Thursday and went for a little ride in the Mt. Diablo foothills.
We saw Esteban at RBW; he was there to buy some parts but didn't have
time to join us. Esteban had his VeloCult Nobilette Demountable
Randonneur, a very sweet looking bike.

List member Joe Bunik joined us for the ride. Gernot borrowed a Hunq,
I rode my Quickbeam, and Joe rode one of his Miyatas that is set up
with cross tires and dirt drop bars. The weather was warm but not too
hot, and I think Gernot got a good taste of the Diablo area. Joe and I
were both playing hooky from work and had to limit the ride time, but
plenty of fun was still had. On our return, we stopped at Joe's garage
so Gernot could buy some more parts to take back to Thailand.
Apparently riv/bob-ish parts are not readily available there. Here are
a few crappy pics from my Blackberry, including one where I was
wishing I brought more gears:

I missed you all by one day... I was there on Wednesday picking up my new Hunqapillar frame. Haven't had a chance to ride Mt. Diablo yet, but will certainly try in the near future. A guide will surely help!

i would love to help you with your ride plans jim, but am currently wrapping up a journal article and tied to my desk till tomorrow night.

i do propose a ride, but i'd like to see it as an s24o up on mt. diablo. maybe a ride up to juniper, and a large breakfast cooked the following morning. it's the classic rbw territory, and the classic rbw activity.

let's plan one for september. anyone?

It was great to see you guys, and sorry I missed Joe. Rode Old Caz
300k (15% dirt, 15k feet of climbing) yesterday and ran into Jim at
around mile 153 at the Point Reyes Station control. Small world.
Needless to say, I'm taking a break from riding for a few days!

First, you need to know how much we suffer here in the SFBay with
crowding in the Jim-namespace. I believe Jim M. holds title to being
the
as-the-crow-flies-nearest-to-RBW Riv rider, whle I am merely lucky to
have a neighbor with such fine tastes (myself lurking on-list as I
consider RBW to be my LBS).

It was good to meet Gernot and I am sorry I missed you @RBW, Esteban.
The pictures you've all seen do not lie- mere minutes from RBW exist a
chain of State and regional parks where Hunqas roam and vultures soar.
Just yesterday, I enjoyed some good dirt I'd not been on previously,
in the southern portions of Shell Ridge- down around the old Joaquin
and Franco places. If you're ever visiting the area I am happy to roll
or to at least provide. I think it is high time for an s24o.

Dustin, I'm tellin' you---if you it on the S1 as you told me you
might, you'll be walking 80 percent of it. If you DO it, get pictures,
and if you go where you say you want to go, don't plan on sleeping.
Good luck, though!

Been meaning to post, but have been caught up in a friend's wedding
proceedings. I had a fabulous ride thanks to Jim and Joe, and a great
time at WHQ as well. Loved the Hunq. Feels like my Sam with even
fatter tires. Wore my RBW visor for the first time (Grant was wearing
his to work as well) and really appreciated the cooling breeze in my
hair on the Diablo climbs. The visor is an awesome design, and
decidedly not selling like hotcakes according to Grant. So throw one
in your shopping cart next time, they are only $13, and like many
other Riv products, a bit unconventional, but once you use them, you
wonder how you got along without one.

Saw the new green Sams and a new green Hunq, and while I think the
Sam's orange is about the prettiest bike color ever, the new green may
be the second prettiest. The photos on the riv site don't do it
justice. It's less Kelly and more creamy than it appears on my
(calibrated) monitor at least.

let's say the last weekend in september then--i'm on tour for all of august, so I can't do any of the planning. Hopefully someone else will step up to the plate in this regard, or else.... (see below)

Otherwise, can agree that we should meet at 3pm on September 24th at Walnut Creek BART and head up the hill from there to Juniper Camp? get there later or earlier, but we'll see you at juniper on way or the other.

There it is, the unofficial rbwlist s24o: fall 2011.

I don't know the area, but that appears to be about a 5% grade for 10 miles?  Perhaps I have the wrong location of the campground?  How far is it?  How much climbing?

I'm tempted, but my AHH isn't set up for carrying much -- I wasn't planning to use it for camping, that's what my Trek is for.  Perhaps I should just break down and get that front rack. :-)

3000' mark on Diablo via North Gate Rd. I don't know the exact

It's been a while since I went up North Gate Rd, but it didn't seem like a
continual 8-10%. Maybe a steeper pitch here and there, but it's a moderate
and climbable road for the most part. 5-6% seems more correct.

But, hey, I live in the West Bay... and the last time I went up it was -

Joe, your map states average grade is 6.1% and maximum grade is 17.6%.

I'm just not going to think about it... only that the return trip will be awesome! I'm going to be taking my time, but even if I have to push the bike all the way, I'm planning to get there.

Question:
- Do we need to make reservations? If so, I volunteer to make the reservation; one campsite takes a maximum of 8 people according to the Reserve America site, costs $30 and there are 29 left for September 24.

I may do a trial run if I get a chance to assess how I would fare and whether my 12 year old son would enjoy coming along or if the relentless climbing would completely turn him off. He'll enjoy the descent for sure!

Will our ride be all on pavement as Joe's map shows or will it be on dirt trails? I see a dirt Juniper trail on the map taking off from the North Gate Road. I thought this was going to be a dirt road ride, don't know why I made that assumption. I've never been to Mt. Diablo.

Northgate Rd averages 6.9 percent with a peak, riding up to the 1,000-
ft mark, of 12+ percent.
A 2000 fit climb in 6.5 miles.

Summit Rd. from the junction Ranger Station to the top, is a 7.5
percent average, and a 1470-ft or so climb in 4.5 miles, with a short
10 percent section around Blue Oak campground, and then the dastardly
19 percent last tenth-of-a-mile or so.

According to the book I wrote in 1982, at least. The roads haven't
changed a bit, though.

If you mean BoFax to Westridge to the East Peak?

I think the pitch up from Alpine dam is a little tougher - probably more mentally because there's not a lot to gauge your progress from.  Going up Diablo, you see the height as you gain it, which always helpful.

Of course, Diablo is taller, but given the up/down/up on the Fairfax route, I'd bet the climbing is similar in overall elevation.

Those are both two of the really fine, interesting and beautiful climbs in the greater SF Bay.

True. Unlike the Alpine dam climb, there aren't many 200' Redwoods left on the slopes of Diablo to obscure the horizon. But then, there are fewer fog-drenching wind-blown afternoons experienced climbing the latter.

Actually, the route he's talking about adds the Pine Mountain climb, then
dips down before climbing up to the ridge (which I'd called "Westridge"
rather than "Ridgecrest"). The total climbing is about 5500' overall.

The climbing via North Gate is about 5100' if Bikely's data is to be
believed.

So the route takes BoFax from Fairfax, and then turns onto Ridgecrest?
I haven't done that one. Have you done it on your Quickbeam?
Also, when I think of Pine Mountain, I think of a mountain bike loop

I bought a vest back in '04 and it has been my favorite ever since.  The first run has tight arm holes and I will get a new one because the arm holes were made bigger.

When Riv announced the pre order for the new run a few months ago I jumped on a Seargent sweater.  Just got it yesterday afternoon.  And although it was 90 outside and I had just got back from a short favorite ride, I pulled it on and wowwie zowwie!  The fit was awesome, it felt so good.  I was concerned that a large size would be too small but is is perfect. (170lbs. and 5'10").  This sweater has large ribs and the old vest that I have does not have the ribs.  This Seargent feels like it will last forever.  My old vest feels the same way.  These are awesome garments.  Thank you Rivendell for for bringing back this fantastic piece of clothing!

Checking in from the high sierra.

This is a ride where you get the freedom to choose how to get up there. If some want to take roads, others want to take dirt, great. Juniper is just shy of 3000 feet. I tend to ride up on the roads, and take dirt back down from around the junction. Just because I like to get there before too late in the day, and enjoy climbing on smooth pavement.

The dirt trail to Juniper Camp, if you're talking about burma road, is entirely a pushing up the hill affair--I did it once and won't again. Too steep to be much more than a good workout and opportunity to mumble to oneself.

It'll be hot, and if we're lucky there'll be tarantulas out. They're nice fellows, so you won't need a tent so long as you've got a warm enough bag.

Maybe we should just meet at RBW, seeing as this is the RBW list. I'm fine with that one too, and I imagine there'll be a few last minute things folks'll want to pick up.

Cheers,

erik

Was someone going to reserve a site or two? Let us know, it sounds
like some people want to go for sure and some are tentative. I would
need to switch some plans, but would like to participate if I knew
there was a place to plop my bag that night. Thanks,

Basically, just head out of Fairfax on BoFax (Bolinas-Fairfax Road, for alla
youse non-locals) and you will crest out above the golf course at the
entrance to the Pine Mountain loop (fire road). So, it's not technically
"Pine Mountain" per se, but you skirt the entrance to that ride. West
Ridgecrest dead-ends into BoFax (and if you get a mixed-terrain hankering,
you can pick up Bolinas Ridge Fire Trail and head north on that).

If you wanted to add the Pine Mountain off-pavement loop to that, there are
a few ways to do it, most of which would require some noticeable climbing
and mixed-terrain linkups. I'd pack extra food. And water.

But, I was really just talking about the paved route I'd posted.

Hope that makes sense,

I will reserve one campground that will take up to 8 people. From what I gathered online, you have to have a reservation but it's for any open spot. I guess that as long as there are open spots, you can always show up and pay at the park but like you, I'd like to know that I'm assured of a spot before I go.

Back from a 10 day bike tour in Colorado, where I discovered there isn't much air at 12,000 feet. I should be ready to climb Diablo. I'll be there to represent the XX contingent.

I don't know if we've reached the maximum of 8 for the campsite I reserved.

It would be good to do a roll call and keep count. I'm sure we can easily reserve another campsite if needed or even do it on the spot. I don't think they fill out.

Reminder, this is for an S24O on Mt. Diablo for the evening of Saturday, September 24. All levels of experience welcome. I'm a total newbie and a slow rider.

I'll start the roll call; add yourselves in sequence:

Juniper is at 3000 feet elevation, and we're starting at zero. We meet at 3 pm, say we start around 3:20. Sunset is around 7.

I might start earlier, just to be sure to get into camp with plenty of time to set up before it gets dark. Maybe not, though. The bike I'm taking has a dynamo light in case I get slow or get flats or something.

I'd like to start earlier just in case I take too long to get there. When I checked the route someone posted, it was 12 miles of climbing. Depending on how much pushing/walking I need to do, I'd still want to get there before it's dark. I don't have much experience setting up camp.

Any other slow riders are welcome to join me fir an earlier start time. The original meeting place was the WC Bart station, but since I'll be driving from Palo Alto, I'd prefer to leave my car at RBW and get a map from them.

I can take another 3 bikes so let me know if anyone wants to carpool.

I'm flying home from a business trip in NYC/DC on Friday evening, but for now, my plans are to be at RBW around noon or 1:00pm.

I am still planning on joining the group - that makes me #7 I think.
Starting earlier than 3PM sounds better to me also. I am pretty good
at getting up the mountain without camping gear, we'll see how that
changes with tent, bag and food; this'll be a first for that.

Seems like the 50+ contingent (speaking for myself only) will meet around 12:30 - 1:00pm to ensure we don't feel pressured to walk too fast uphill if needed... and still make camp before dark.

The stronger rides may meet at 3:00 as originally planned.

Also seems like we've gone beyond our group of 8 so we'll need to reserve a second campsite. Roll call didn't fully work so I'll prepare a list tomorrow.
