List member Joe Bunik joined us for the ride. Gernot borrowed a Hunq,
I rode my Quickbeam, and Joe rode one of his Miyatas that is set up
with cross tires and dirt drop bars. The weather was warm but not too
hot, and I think Gernot got a good taste of the Diablo area. Joe and I
were both playing hooky from work and had to limit the ride time, but
plenty of fun was still had. On our return, we stopped at Joe's garage
so Gernot could buy some more parts to take back to Thailand.
Apparently riv/bob-ish parts are not readily available there. Here are
a few crappy pics from my Blackberry, including one where I was
wishing I brought more gears:

How near? I'm guessing everyone already has Sunday plans, but I just rolled into town (Berkeley) and read these e-mails, and I have nothing to do today!

It was good to meet Gernot and I am sorry I missed you @RBW, Esteban.
The pictures you've all seen do not lie- mere minutes from RBW exist a
chain of State and regional parks where Hunqas roam and vultures soar.
Just yesterday, I enjoyed some good dirt I'd not been on previously,
in the southern portions of Shell Ridge- down around the old Joaquin
and Franco places. If you're ever visiting the area I am happy to roll
or to at least provide. I think it is high time for an s24o.

It's been a while since I went up North Gate Rd, but it didn't seem like a
continual 8-10%. Maybe a steeper pitch here and there, but it's a moderate
and climbable road for the most part. 5-6% seems more correct.
But, hey, I live in the West Bay... and the last time I went up it was -

Yeah, my map is just the paved road up. I'd be inclined to go up on
dirt, though. Unfortunately I can't commit quite yet though I am happy
to provide support where possible.

Actually, the route he's talking about adds the Pine Mountain climb, then
dips down before climbing up to the ridge (which I'd called "Westridge"
rather than "Ridgecrest"). The total climbing is about 5500' overall.
The climbing via North Gate is about 5100' if Bikely's data is to be
believed.

lengthy ramble.

So the route takes BoFax from Fairfax, and then turns onto Ridgecrest?
I haven't done that one. Have you done it on your Quickbeam?
Also, when I think of Pine Mountain, I think of a mountain bike loop
ride I've done. How do you add Pine Mountain to the Tam route?

I bought a vest back in '04 and it has been my favorite ever since. The first run has tight arm holes and I will get a new one because the arm holes were made bigger.
When Riv announced the pre order for the new run a few months ago I jumped on a Seargent sweater. Just got it yesterday afternoon. And although it was 90 outside and I had just got back from a short favorite ride, I pulled it on and wowwie zowwie! The fit was awesome, it felt so good. I was concerned that a large size would be too small but is is perfect. (170lbs. and 5'10"). This sweater has large ribs and the old vest that I have does not have the ribs. This Seargent feels like it will last forever. My old vest feels the same way. These are awesome garments. Thank you Rivendell for for bringing back this fantastic piece of clothing!

Basically, just head out of Fairfax on BoFax (Bolinas-Fairfax Road, for alla
youse non-locals) and you will crest out above the golf course at the
entrance to the Pine Mountain loop (fire road). So, it's not technically
"Pine Mountain" per se, but you skirt the entrance to that ride. West
Ridgecrest dead-ends into BoFax (and if you get a mixed-terrain hankering,
you can pick up Bolinas Ridge Fire Trail and head north on that).
If you wanted to add the Pine Mountain off-pavement loop to that, there are
a few ways to do it, most of which would require some noticeable climbing
and mixed-terrain linkups. I'd pack extra food. And water.
But, I was really just talking about the paved route I'd posted.
Hope that makes sense,
One campground confirmed for up to 8 people @ Juniper campground for September 24.René
I am interested in going, I haven't done any s24o yet but have read the stuff on the site and other links. Is there room still or do we need to get a second camp site going?Stephen
