I grabbed 0.8.4 the other day...  I've been content with 0.7.2b...
Couple of interesting additions and changes, so I figured I'd check it out.

Thought I'd post here a heads-up.  I don't know if it's been "officially" reported or not, but I figure it won't take long for Sound to hear about it...

The new method of printing holes - laying down the innermost perimeter last - is a great idea.  I know I've had a number of prints where I've wished that were how it were done.  However, I have found that this method has literally killed my hole size accuracy.  I print a *lot* of holes.  And I've got it down where a designed 3mm hole takes a 3mm screw damn near perfectly (or a 5mm hole and screw...  whatever...)  The "new math" is generating holes nearly .5mm too small.

To verify, I drew up a quick hole test object, with holes 3mm - 10mm diameter spaced 3mm apart, on a 6mm thick rectangle.  Printed it using the exact same configuration using 0.8.4 and 0.7.2b and confirmed...  0.8.4 produces holes too small.  Across the board.  0.7.2b generates the "perfect" holes I am accustomed to.  All other dims came out nearly identical (L - W - T).  I will say that 0.8.4 produces a bit better solid infill, but this post is about hole size...  if you're printing holes be aware they will likely be considerably smaller than designed.

I have noticed the same thing, always have to drill out the holes now with 0.8.4 if I need precision.  They are always too small.

Yeah...
For me that really is unacceptable.  Unless - until - that's fixed, I'll keep using 0.7.2b

Excellent.
Knew it wouldn't take long to get officially "bugged".
Thanks!!

I noticed the same problem with two pieces that should fit together, impossible to get them attached in 0.8.4, perfect fit in 0.8.3. This is a bug introduced in 0.8.4, I made some tests with 20mm cube, sliced it with 0.8.3 and 0.8.4, compared G-Code and reported the bug : https://github.com/alexrj/Slic3r/issues/507

Hopefully it is now fixed in development branch, you should stay with 0.8.3 until 0.8.5.

Yeah Sound(slic3r author) knows about this big in 0.8.4. 0.8.4 changed the way it does perimeters to do inside first the outside rather then the way it used to do outside then inside. This introduced a big that basically adds a 0.5-1mm extra wall thickness on perimeters and that is why your snap fit or bolt holes that used to fit no longer do.

I'm fairly certain this bug is fixed in the git HEAD branch if you are dating enough to run slci3r from git. I am certain that there will be an 0.8.5 release very soon that addresses this issue as enough folks are hitting this issue.

Unfortunately there are soo many awesome bug fixes in 0.8.4 that I'm still using it in spite of this bug and have just tuned my perimeter settings to compensate for the issue or get down and dirty with my reamer tools :/

Has anyone heard an update on this?  I've been avoiding snap together objects, but now I need to print something with exact holes.  Any news on when 0.8.5 is coming out? What is the most stable release prior to 0.8.4 for when I need to print holes?

Thanks!

0.7.2b is what I use daily.
If you've got your overall calibration down tight, it generates perfect holes.
Dunno about any if the versions in between...

The binary (.exe) that is posted on GitHub is still 0.8.4, but if you follow the compile instructions, you will get the fix. From what I have seen on the bug tracker on GitHub (here and here), this has been fixed. But I have yet to try it. Sunday, hopefully...

Could you break down the compile process to speed things up or a link to info?

My apologies. The link is found at the bottom of slic3r.org.

I created a batch file called slic3e.bat that starts wperl and loads slic3r.pl for you, using the command found at the bottom of the above linked page.

I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet, but I have not been able to slice a file while inside pronterface. This is because of the fact that you need to load the current file into slic3r, and I am not sure how to do that, yet.

Yep.  :)
Glad to hear it's good for ya'.
It's my favorite version, so far.
I'll test the new 0.8.5 (or whatever...) once it's released.
I can live without the other bits and bug fixes until then.

Got it.

As long as you installed your CitrusPerl in the directory that was suggested, and the slic3r directory is in the pronterface directory, you can use this command in the "Slicecommand" field in Settings/Options:

C:\dev\citrusperlforslic3rperl-standard-51402-20903-msw-x86-014\CitrusPerlforSlic3rPerl\bin\wperl Slic3r\slic3r.pl $s --load config.ini --output $o

Put this in the "sliceoptscommand" field in Settings/Options in order to access the "Slicing Settings" menu item:

C:\dev\citrusperlforslic3rperl-standard-51402-20903-msw-x86-014\CitrusPerlforSlic3rPerl\bin\wperl Slic3r\slic3r.pl --load config.ini --ignore-nonexistent-config

Hope this helps! Let me know if this cures the hole size issue, I will be building my printer tonight and will not be testing until Sunday. Hopefully.

Did you use - Download CitrusPerl 5.14 (preferred over 5.12) from http://www.citrusperl.com/download.html

OR

(note that a CitrusPerl package with all Slic3r dependencies preinstalled can be downloaded at http://dl.slic3r.org/citrusperlforslic3rperl-standard-51402-20903-msw-x86-014.zip)

Larry -

Currently printing parts for MM15+ and 0.7.2b holes and nut traps are spot on!

Thanks - Brad

PS - looking forward to Slic3r 0.8.5...

Awesome.
Since posting the original comment about 0.8.4 generating "funky" holes, I have tested every other version from 0.7.2b up and find that every other one produces some discrepancy in holes...
I sure hope Sound gets it right in the next release.  I really do like a lot of the new features / bug fixes in 0.8.4

Are you saying that 0.7.2b is that last buggy release version, or that the bug was introduced with it?

* First buggy release.

Nooooo....
It just is the release that I have personally found has the "best" hole printing.  Spot on.  Every time .
Each version has had its "bugs"...  whether minor or major (just take a look at the version history and bug reports), and the newer releases have introduced new features, new math, new methods, which while great moves forward, I find the "bugs" introduced outweigh the benefits of the "new" stuff...

Oh, of course. I'm a programmer, so I completely understand that. I'm just a little under the weather, and really need to proofread my posts more.

That said, I'll be giving 0.7.2b  closer look. I've been using Cura for a while since I couldn't really find any reference to which version the bug was introduced with, but with your testing I'll give it a try. I much prefer Slic3r to Skeinforge/Cura.

Except that I got a "403 Forbidden" when I attempted to grab the x86 version.  x64 was okay...
Will try again later.

Binary for OS X up and running.
Nicest feature so far is drop down menu for different configs.
Will check holes today.

And - yay! - the x86 version allowed me to download.
I'll be running some tests over the next few days.

Still testing but holes seem a tad large 5mm bolts and nut traps are a little loose.
