2020-02-11 Dataverse Community Call

Dataverse Community Call 1 Agenda

* Community Questions

Dataverse Community Call 1 Attendees

* Danny Brooke (IQSS)
* Gustavo Durand (IQSS)
* Jim Myers (TDL/QDR/GDCC)
* Phil Durbin (IQSS)
* Schusie Sun (NTU)
* Yuyun Ishak (NTU)

Dataverse Community Call 1 Notes

* Community Questions
* (Schusie) People leaving NTU, email under "contact" goes to invalid account. We have to check whether their email account is still valid or not. And they can't log into our Dataverse system anymore. We have to create an external account for them. They lose access to their dataset. Our concern is that the user who is interested in the data can't reach the original dataset owner. We aren't involved in the process. It causes a bad user experience.
   * (Danny) There is an account conversion process. Failing that, there is an API for converting/merging accounts. As a superuser, you can make a metadata change to the dataset contact.
   * (Jim) There's a feature where a superuser can edit a published dataset without incrementing the version
   * (Steve) We don't have the user enter their contact email address. It comes from our system. There's no simple answer. People move. (As an aside, it would be nice to have ORCID IDs in other places such as under the "Contributor" field.) We use email address for the role of a dataset rather than a person.
   * (Danny) You can have multiple contacts.
   * (Schusie) Thanks for sharing your experiences!
* (Yuyun) Are all downloads counted, even if there are a lot of files? We would prefer that downloads from Superusers don't count.
   * (Jim) Downloads from drafts are not counted. There's also a new option called Make Data Count, which ignores counts from robots. Those come from a list - you might be able to configure to use a custom list that includes your superuser’s machine. As you say, it's a nice trick, or workaround.
* (how to claim a dataset that was published using a personal staff account at dataverse.harvard.edu and she/he was left organization, what is the step?
   * (Danny) Please ask at sup...@dataverse.org
* Connecting from OJS to Dataverse. We have a script to connect OJS 3 to Dataverse.
   * (Danny) There is a lot of excitement about this. There's also a Slack channel at https://teampkp.slack.com
* (Steve) We have a Jupyter Notebook community from the academic networks in Australia.
   * (Phil) There are two new videos from Whole Tale at https://dataverse.org/dataversetv
   * (Phil) You can play with Whole Tale on the demo Dataverse server: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/ZJg-_gS4n1g/qw2NNClCBgAJ
   * (Phil) mybinder now supports Dataverse DOIs: https://mybinder.org
   * (Phil) https://scholar.harvard.edu/pdurbin/blog/2019/jupyter-notebooks-and-crazy-ideas-for-dataverse
   * (Danny) New feedback doc at https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/6085#issuecomment-584364184

Dataverse Community Call 2 Notes

* (Danny) We've kicked off the planning for the 6th annual Dataverse Community Meeting June 17-19 in Cambridge, MA: https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/dcm2020
* Community Questions
* (James) I'm from PKP and just getting back into Dataverse, I see in the Community Call notes above that there’s a script mentioned for OJS3, is there something in progress?
   * (Phil) Nothing beyond what’s been discussed in the OJS Slack
   * (James) The draft "Dataverse OJS 3 Plugin Specification" can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/18qv_vgbOGAsnnNlvKA3raDq2WcgjjuQekkgHQvjuZNU/edit
   * (Phil) To get involved, most of the conversation is happening in PKP Slack. Please see https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/d_8aZnav4KE/U_qUSXUzAAAJ
* (Phil) I attended Lilly's talk at FOSDEM, and wanted to see if there’s some potential for an integration with Dataverse. I highly recommend watching her talk! https://fosdem.org/2020/schedule/event/open_research_frictionless_data/
   * (Lily) Open Knowledge Foundation, Frictionless Data for Reproducible Research Project, interested to see if we can integrate with Dataverse regarding Data Packages
   * (Phil) Maybe an external tool that allows people to examine a potentially unclean file in Goodtables, fix it up, and redeposit it into Dataverse.
   * (Phil) Since Frictionless Data supports deposit into Zenodo, perhaps it could support deposit into Dataverse? I'm happy to create a GitHub issue if someone tells me which repo to use. (Update: There is no Frictionless Data server-side software that deposits files. See https://gitter.im/frictionlessdata/chat/archives/2020/02/12 )
   * (Phil) Everyone is welcome to join https://gitter.im/frictionlessdata/chat (and https://chat.dataverse.org of course).
* (?) What’s the concept for the DV Command line client? (q. For Oliver)
   * (Phil) I put a brain dump in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pyIC_h61SG8FoSmldZyW3WeElHPZyC-qR7_FWqqhDwI/edit?usp=sharing via https://github.com/poikilotherm/dvcli/issues/1
   * (Phil) We talked about it a bit in IRC yesterday: http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2020-02-10#i_118202
* (Phil) How was Tromso?! This: https://site.uit.no/dataverseno/european-dataverse-workshop-2020/
   * (Jim) Lots of discussion in the technology track. Where should the community be coordinating? What can the GDCC do for you? Lots of tools being created but they are scattered across different repositories. Interest in putting additiona things under https://github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium . We've put the previewers there. The DVUploader. Maybe pyDataverse. We added a new testing suite at https://github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium/dataverse-test-suite . How do we keep those tests up to date? Let's at least get them somewhere where we can all see them. Policies about how to add repos: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/zIi7Grycav4/relzlpMKAgAJ   . On the second day, there were lots of discussions on technical topics. Interest in metadata updates. People want more structure to what is now key value pairs. Interest in external controlled vocabularies. What if you could point at a URL for DarwinCore? Lots of discussion of remote storage ideas. There's a variation on the direct upload to S3 pull request. Lots of reindeer steak. Northern lights tours. The amount of participation was high. Many more people were able to come from Europe than could come to Boston in the summer.
   * (Gustavo) We get many one or two representatives from each installation in Europe in Boston in the summer. It's nice to be able to see many more people from these installations in Europe.
   * (Jim) There's a lot of work that isn't getting back to upstream. It's nice to hear about the ideas from the people who are working on features.
   * (Phil) I'm enjoying the notes from the meeting at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/HtAzybL5SiY/9xWjenACEQAJ
* (Jon) Are we still talking about Globus on Thursday? This is another remote storage option.
   * (Danny) Yes. Meghan sent something around.

Just a brief comment on this issue:
(Schusie) People leaving NTU, email under "contact" goes to invalid account.
>> We also have been discussing this issue, and are considering to add by default also the contact address of the repository to all datasets.

Best, Philipp

Thanks, there's now a dedicated "How do you manage invalid email account?" thread, so I copied your brief comment over there: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/AlwUN0HeqvM/rnlIr93QGwAJ :)
