Hi Guys

I’m looking for some pointers. I have been given a job to get some data of a tape a Sony DDS3. I have actually never dealt with tape backup before and I am looking a purchasing a second hand tape reader that is USB based not SCSI. My thinking is that USB (though slow) is likely to be easier to manage for a newbie like myself.

If I purchase this machine what software do you recommend to get access to data – I was thinking of using linux but is there a ‘Data Recovery’ software tool for tapes. By this is there one that recognises the format of the tape and acts accordingly?

Any help will be much appreciated.

With Regards

Marcus

If you are doing recovery on tape, you have to use the same software they were using to write it. Sometimes even the same version. What did they use to create the backup with?

Marcus,

If you're unable to get information for the tapes, it might be worthwhile to see if you can track down a tool written by Sanderson forensics based out of the UK. They released a Windows based tape forensics package called TapeCat (not to be confused with the linux tool of the same name) that helped me out in situations like the one you described many times. It'd be worth seeing if you can hunt it down.

At the very least you'll be able to scan the tape header to determine the software/version used to create the backups.

Adam.
