Toby, you’re not the only one! I had just scheduled this in my own calendar for 20th Feb 2014—thanks so much for the bump and helping me realise too!

It would be worth thinking about organising a reboot of the belfast JS group, our priority is going to be with Ruby first of all and then hopefully we can get some reuse! Is anyone up for helping on either or both of those?

Deffo up for getting in on the meetings on a potential reboot!

I'd be up for helping out with this again. I think we just need to pick a regular monthly time and do it.

What do you all think of the general target for talks, I think more of a mixture between hardcore JS and a beginner friendly approach might work better as there seems to be a lack of developers who specialise specifically in JS locally here in Belfast, but every web dev needs JS and can benefit from a great community of developers and designers we have here.

I'd still be up for the 20th of Feb if we want to pick a date and stick to it.

Hi,

I'd be up for going. I'll put my self forward for a talk on sails in March. Don't want to do one on the first pass though.

Cheers,

 I like the sound of keeping things beginner friendly. Not only does that make it less intimidating for growing the size of the group outside people who work with JS already, but I think it’s also good to remind more experienced people of how important the basics are.

I’d be happy to talk though some of the javascript patterns we use in the GitHub.com codebase, if people would be interested? If it’s on a date that I can get to, that is.

I'd still be up for the 20th of Feb…

Considering I had it in my calendar earlier today, that’d still work for me ;)

This all sounds great.

I think the notion of perhaps making sure each night has a more elementary segment to it is probably a good idea? [Thinking while most devs who've spent at least some time in a proper shop will know what a build script is, it'd be great to make "actual designers" feel more at ease, without necessarily spending time arguing jQuery or MooTools] — and see how the demographic shifts and go with that.

Not sure what I can offer in that way, but up for helping where I can

D

Sounds good! Sometimes errors are just features in disguise. Nice one on the accidental kick start Toby.

If you all would like, we can use the space down at Rumble Labs for the evening.

Definitely that Thursday? I do find earlier in the week it’s easier for people to keep commitments for events, let’s decide a date and I’ll make sure we can fit it in.

Perhaps 3rd week in February. Or how about this, we combine belfast ruby and js events and dedicate an hr (or a room) per topic and see what happens. Given people are so busy and such cross pollination between the two (at least for us) that this would make a lot of sense

if you would like, I’m idling in ##belfastjs on irc.freenode.net (a-la ##belfastruby) we should really reclaim ownership of both of those channels and setup a bot.

There’s a first hacking project as well as sorting out the sites.

Perhaps, a possibility on the first meeting to have a discussion on potential beginner / medium talks for beginners ? I know at the likes of UU/IMD, the range of curriculum has been low par, effectively not preparing folks for how things work outside dated jquery plugins. The only way young minds get to a better place is through self learning (potentially an argument with everything, I know). Just saying if you guys are making an emphasis on beginnings, a discussion for a strategy to lure fresh blood in ?

Even beginning with a mixup of events alongside BRuby is a great idea. Gets the ball rolling and to get a feel for what the demand maybe outside of the group.

You can never say no to hack projects. Especially if there is cake involved.

If cross-pollination is the goal, then would it not make sense to hold them both in the same room, with the same audience so that the attention isn’t split? They’d have to go one after each other instead of simultaneously, but would that be better? I don’t know, I’m just thinking out aloud here.

Yes definitely, the multi-room idea was simply a suggestion. I know how people can be opinionated about things. However thinking about it more I always prefer when conferences are single track and it actually would feel less inclusive. So I think the big takeaway is that I think this will really work and will be better together but everyone will need to bring an open mind!

Yeah and that would make a choice necessary for attendees and would be an opportunity for a speaker to feel bad if people all wanted to listen to someone else. Even if it was just that the cared *more* about something else and that given the option to see both, they would.

It's all about creating a safe place where people's ideas are welcomed and that the community *knows* each other enough not to take offence at what each other say (and also try not to cause offence).

So yes, scratch that idea entirely, however not entirely I would like to put the idea forward again, slightly refactored. That we could use our meeting room as more of a hacking room to the side so if you wanted to work and listen, you could do that but not offend the speaker or distract anyone who just wants to focus on the talk.

I'd love to actually hear you talk about that kind of stuff at some point Coby, yes I know it's the softer stuff and some people dislike it, but I actually find it hard to learn anything new when people are focusing too much on the technology, it's really important, oh yeah and the fact that all of my thoughts on the matter are largely inspired by gh ;)

Cool :) Do you mean the javascript patterns stuff I mentioned above, or something else? Sorry, just not quite sure what you were referring to.

Yes, that’s it totally. I’d like to suggest that anything on how gh works would be a really interesting topic! I meant, I think trying to keep talks as close as possible to a “principles" level would be great for a cross-lang event to ensure everyone gets something from it.

Or maybe I’m just worrying too much! I’m not even speaking. Carry on :)
