Designated Emphasis & Certificate in New Media
Applications due: November 1, 2021

The Berkeley Center for New Media is an interdisciplinary research center that studies and shapes media transition and emergence from diverse perspectives. Through critical thinking and making, we cultivate technological equity and fairness in our classrooms, in our communities, and on the internet.

A new media certification provides enhanced skills in analyzing and/or designing future media with an awareness of historical, social, and cultural perspectives that might not be visible from a single discipline. Emphasizing a critical understanding of the nature and implications of new media, our students draw on theories and methodologies from the arts, the humanities and social sciences, and science and engineering, to innovate while questioning the impact of new media on the human experience.

Our students are eligible for a host of opportunities through the Center, including conference and summer research grants, our prestigious Lyman and Eugene Jarvis fellowships, research supportteaching positions, and unique experiences with the world-class speakers we bring to campus.

We are accepting applications for admission to the Designated Emphasis (DE) in New Media Ph.D. program, the Graduate Certificate in New Media program, and the Undergraduate Certificate in New Media program. All applications for Fall 2021 admittance are due November 1.

Be Part of an Upcoming Exhibit at the Lawrence Hall of Science!
The Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley's public science center is putting together a new exhibit for this upcoming fall. This exhibit will feature objects submitted by Bay Area communities (you!) that showcase ways in which folks have worked through the challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to highlight the way folks had to find creative ways to connect to one another, adapt to social isolation, care for their own and loved ones’ physical and mental well-being, keep their businesses afloat, and care for communities that were disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Your artifact could also represent what you hope life could look like after the pandemic. Submissions can be 2-D or 3-D objects, artwork, photos, videos, stories, journals, calendars, recipes, tools, games, crafts, or anything that can represent ways folks have adapted in response to the challenges related to the pandemic!

If you would like to contribute to this exhibit either by sharing an artifact or story you can do so through this survey. If you would like to learn more about the exhibit or how to contribute an artifact you can visit our website. You can also email community.conn...@berkeley.edu with any questions.

In this two-speaker symposium that explores the next evolution of Disability Studies, Professor Sunaura Taylor (ESPM) leads by conceptualizing disability as a central force that shapes human relationships to the more-than-human world through the lens of a forty-year-old Superfund waste site in Tucson, Arizona. The talk asks us to understand ecosystem impairment not as merely metaphorical, but as a form of disability. Taylor frames impaired ecosystems as parts of larger networks of disabled ecologies, or the material and cultural ways disability is manifested among human and nonhuman entities. Taylor suggests that disability theory, with its deep engagement with concepts such as loss, limitation, interdependence, and adaptation, might offer key insights into how to live with impaired landscapes and build accessible futures. The next speaker, Professor Karen Nakamura (Anthropology) explores disability and its relationship to Artificial Intelligence through two lenses. The first is contemporary - the current biases against disabled people in AI/ML systems that render them as non-human by our robot overlords; and secondarily, the perception of AI/ML systems as fundamentally disabled themselves. Together these two talks explore how Critical Disability Studies slash Crip Studies has moved beyond the corporeal body of the disabled person and its new potentialities. Learn more here.

Repair Day 2021

Saturday 16 October is the fifth edition of International Repair Day, a day to promote and celebrate the value of fixing.  The theme for this year’s edition is “Repair Lowers Carbon Emissions”, in response to the recent, alarming IPCC report on the climate and the UN Climate Negotiations coming up in November. For most types of products we see at community repair events, most of their global warming impact has occurred before they were used for the first time. The carbon emissions from production, that come embodied in imported products, are often called “consumption emissions”. By extending the lives of these products, we lower our consumption emissions over time.

This Bloomberg article “Here’s why ‘right to repair’ gadgets is really a climate issue” is helpful. Learn more here.

Spring 2022 Compass Courses

The Compass Courses below fulfill the L&S Arts & Literature Breadth Requirement. More than 90% of students highly recommend them, calling them “mind-blowing,” “one of the richest experiences” at Cal, and the “perfect introduction” to studying different disciplines or “discovering new passions.” In the spring, we are offering two Compass Courses. More information is available in the attached flyers and in the course catalog, linked below.

HUM 10 Compass Course
Indigenous Arts in the Americas: Old and New Media
This class investigates recent Indigenous creative practices—including poetry, film, dance, photography, and textiles—from across the Americas to think about how these forms of making and expression are not discrete but rather intimately woven together.

HUM 10 Compass Course
What is Asia?
The course approaches this question from three perspectives: the construction of Asia as a cultural space by Europeans from Greek antiquity to modern times; Asia’s own exploration of its identity as a cultural and political sphere; and the imagining of Asia by Americans in the age of Asia’s global economic rise.

ANTHRO 196/HUM 295 Tres Hornos: Earthen Ovens and Foodways of the Southwest
This course centers on the design, construction, sustainable use, and experimental variables in archaeological feature visibility of a broadly used food technology, earthen ovens. Known as the horno in the US Southwest, this colonial introduction is the focus of our seminar, experimenting with construction techniques and using them to cook a variety of indigenous and introduced foods. Collaboratively-built hornos will be touchstones for exploring how cultural and historical tradition intersects with contemporary
practice via 3D clay fabrication techniques and through the creative lens of installation, land art, and social practice. An attached small-scale garden project will provide a physical connection to ethnobotanical histories. Undergraduate and graduate students from across the univeristy will work together to explore how the friction between empire and indigeneity can create both anxious and productive outcomes.

Seminar participants will also participate in hands-on experiences building and cooking and examining archaeological artifacts, among other learning modalities, to think about how colonial food practices shape(ed) contemporary ways of making, cooking, growing, and community building..

Apply online by November 5, 2021, at https://forms.gle/Pjh9X6CKaLG514Px8. More information in the attached flyer below!

New Media DE/Certificate Apps
Applications Open for the Designated Emphasis, Graduate Certificate, and Undergraduate Certificate in New Media

Our students are eligible for a host of opportunities through the Center, including conference and summer research grants, our prestigious Lyman and Eugene Jarvis fellowships, research support, teaching positions, and unique experiences with the world-class speakers we bring to campus.

We are accepting applications for admission to the Designated Emphasis (DE) in New Media Ph.D. program, the Graduate Certificate in New Media program, and the Undergraduate Certificate in New Media program. All applications for Fall 2021 admittance are due November 1.
