Global warming is a 'weapon of mass destruction'
Climate experts hit back after being accused of overstating the
problem

By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor, The Iindependent
Published: 18 March 2007

Global warming is a "weapon of mass destruction", one of Britain and
the world's top climatologists said yesterday.

Sir John Houghton, former director-general of the Meteorological
Office and chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental
Pollution, entered the debate over the seriousness of climate change
after two meteorologists were reported as saying that "some scientists
have been guilty of overplaying the available evidence". He said he
agreed with the Government's chief scientist, Professor Sir David
King, that it posed a greater threat than terrorism.

The comments of the two meteorologists, Professor Paul Hardaker and
Professor Chris Collier, both of the Royal Meteorological Society -
billed on Radio 4 as "leading experts on climate change" - threatened
to revive the row over the scientific view of global warming after the
broadcasting of Channel 4's polemic The Great Global Warming Swindle
10 days ago, which took issue with the view set out in Al Gore's film
An Inconvenient Truth.

One of the most distinguished scientists featured in it, the
oceanographer Professor Carl Wunsch of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, says he has registered a formal complaint with Ofcom.

Sir John says he agrees "we must not exaggerate the evidence, and if
anything must underplay it". But he adds the evidence of serious
climate change is now "very substantial".

Sceptics charge that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
exaggerates the dangers. But Sir John, as one of the founders of the
panel, says that it had "deliberately underestimated the problem".

He says the latest projections of the floods and droughts that will
result from the heating of the globe are "frightening". And he adds
that the 20,000 deaths caused by the 2003 heatwave in Europe justify
the view that it is more dangerous than terrorism.

Sir John Houghton - cartoon character.
Former director-general of the

Meteorological Office and chairman of the
Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution

Lunatic euro-tard cartoon character.

The world knows why there were 20,000 deaths in August of 2003.

It had nothing to do with Co2 agw.

Hint:

Air conditioning

You Euro-tards are only 50 years behind civilization.

Instead of wasting your money on politicians, carbon caps, and fools
like Sir John Houghton, you euro-tards need to hire a bunch of
American heating/air contractors to upgrade your primitive buildings
systems into the 21st century.

You fucking people don't seem to have a clue.

We Americans are happy to help the hapless.

" But Sir John, as one of the founders of the panel, says that it had
"deliberately underestimated the problem"."
So that is why the projections for temperature and sea level rise have gone
down for each report. So, just to make sure we all are on the same page, if
projections go down in time than that means the earlier projections were
overestimating the problem.

"Sir John says he agrees "we must not exaggerate the evidence, and if
anything must underplay it". But he adds the evidence of serious climate
change is now "very substantial"."

So in order to not exaggerate evidence he brings up the non sequiter of the
2003 heat wave and 20000 dead. Of course that number is unverifiable, but
even were it true it was not global warming that caused the lion share of
deaths- it was socialism. I know you don't believe me so lets go look at
what wikipedia has to say.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_European_heat_wave
The massive death toll in France has been blamed on France's labour laws
which contributed to severe staff shortages in the public health and aged
care systems during the country's summer vacation, as well as a lack of
air-conditioning in French medical facilities. The government of Jacques
Chirac and his Minister for Health, Jean-François Mattei, were condemned for
failing to issue warnings and not recalling staff back to work as news of
mortality spikes were being reported from the health surveillance
authorities.
According to OSHA the most heat related injuries do not occur during the
hottest month of the year, but in June. You would think it would be Aug.
but by then most people are acclimated to the temperature and have little
problems, but when a body is not used to the heat, that is when problems
arise. So in a perverse way global warming would probably reduce heat
related injuries by keeping people more acclimated to warmer temperatures.
As an aside, how much more substantial is very substantial? Just wondering.
And does anyone else think it is the height of hypocrisy to put down
websites that you disagree with and yet bring this rubbish into the
discussion.

Air-conditioning was the solution to the
"20,000 deaths caused by the 2003 heatwave in Europe".

(If that happened in the US, it would still be front page news.)

We're still listening to the first of the cries from the eco-freaks.

Maybe one day they will get it right but not this time.

Instead of wasting our time listening to their shrill noise, we need
to be demanding that Congress provide sufficient funding for nuclear
power plants, fusion research and electric commuter vehicles with free
charges at their employer.

Start by diverting that $4 billion in AGW grants to something
productive.

Lying reich-winger. Global Warming exists, because it is accurately
measured. Climate change has happened already and is recorded
worldwide and is documented. It is caused by humans without a doubt.
It harms the rich and poor both by threatens the poor the most because
they can't afford the defenses that the rich can buy to make
accommodations, like air conditioning or deeper well or flood control
measures.

It was discussed openly over 3 decades and the decision has been made
that the debate portion is closed so that emergency response actions
can go forward.

There is no new evidence and no surprises. It has been found that the
richest corporations are engaged in criminal frauds to protect their
dirty pollution sources of income and refuse to change to clean
industry investments. Career criminal accomplices in the sciences have
been exposed, identified, debunked by courtroom evidence. Paid
accomplices through front organizations regularly post deceptions to
continue the "appearance of debate" when the debate is over. No new
evidence accompanies the propaganda piece above.

Which is why it's a good idear to not exaggerate or lie. Especially
about something as potentially devastating as the climate.

Environmentalists overstate their case as a matter of policy.

This could end by destroying us all.

come across.

Why you copied and pasted this tripe, I have no idea.

You're evidently responding to my post, and yet I've never claimed to be

Global warming is an issue tailor made for the industrialists.
Even if advocates of fighting it are successful, the only pollutants
they want the industrialists to cut back on the emissions of are the
ones that are proven to contribute to global warming. How is it that
the original issue of contamination of air and water by pollutants in
general has been forgotten?

Not a reasonable source.

Let me google.

http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d061122t.pdf

Total spending on "climate related" science in 2004 was $1.98 billion, the
majority was spent on energy conservation, fossil energy research and
development, renewable energy, fusion and nuclear power research.

What is closer to real climate research was: NASA 227 million, EPA 89
million, and Other 235 million.

Of course, only a fraction would be in grants. NASA, for example, needs to
buy rocket parts and fuel, and NASA has scientists, engineers and such
what on staff.

I'd like to see if you can come up with a better number.

It's Scotius, not Scrotius, and if you don't think pollution

the environment is not one of them. Okay?

Generally, one's self interests are stronger than one's interests in
the well being of others. To assert that self interest is supreme is
to pretend that man is a solitary hunter, like an eagle, and can live
on his own. To assert that the interest of the group is supreme is to
pretend that man is a hive creature like a bee. Neither is the case.
We are social creatures, but when push comes to shove, most will
choose the interests of self and family over those of our fellow man.

That being said, most of the time push has not come to shove. We feel
compelled to regulate commerce because a truly free market leads to
slavery, prostitution, widespread crack and heroin addiction, the sale
of poisonous products and other socially devastating problems. When
the market is over regulated, we also suffer. Good government requires
a balance, and in general no one is satisfied. There are always those
who want more and those who want less regulation.

I tend towards the libertarian side, although I am socially
conservative. I want as few regulations as possible, but won't stand
for slavery, and I insist on compulsory education. Yes, these limit
our freedom, but are necessary for us to live in a technological
society and defend ourselves against our enemies.

Those who hanker for an anarchistic totally free market lifestyle are
free to give it a go... find an isolated spot and try to eke out an
existence. It will be a sorry excuse for a life, but you will benefit
from the fruits of your labor and your labor alone, living in a rough
hewn hut and eating what you can kill with a bow and arrow.

If they are paid to defraud people, the law is already on the books.
If TWO or more people collaborate on a criminal fraud using WIRES
(like the internet tubes) or US mail, then the additional crime of
RICO is added that cost the tobacco crime lords $340,000,000,000 in
1999. That's Billion with a capital B -- it really is a crime, and
there really are consequences for getting caught at it. Usually the
little guys get sent up for some sphincter-stretching, but they were
always considered disposable anyway, while the rich negotiate a
comfortable fine and walk free.

Perhaps you should listen to the responsible adult (scientists) who
are with them and also pointing to the problem. As a matter of scale,
global cooling was that responsible adult muttering "is that a wolf?"
while getting out the binoculars. The moral here is, ignore the "eco-
freaks" and listen to the scientists.

> Maybe one day they will get it right but not this time.

Ignore them, and look at what the scientific consensus is. The
scientists are the ones who are saying it's bad, and that it's our
fault.

Guess you can do the right thing for the wrong reasons. Free charging
will never happen, though some companies will likely offer it as a
perk.

The responsible adult wants to fire his gun at the wolf, and you're
bitching about the cost of bullets and wanting to sell the rifles
scope to cover the cost. The excitable kid is firing their slingshot.

I can't hear them over all those scientists who signed the Oregon
Petition.

To date no one, scientist or poltician, has proven scientifically that
GW, if it even exists, is caused by man-made CO2.

Inference is a powerful reasoning tool but it must be used correctly.
It only works when all possible contradictions associated with it are
eliminated. If there are any substantive contradictions that can be
inferred from the same data, then there is no valid inference
possible, at least not at that time.

AGW loons can advance any claim they want, but if true scientists can
show that it also results in contradictions, then it is invalid.

There is overwhelming valid scientific evidence that AGW is invalid.

That was a con job orchestrated by known crooks and career criminals
with courtroom evidence documenting their paychecks from Organized
Crime. People get conned all the time. Cons exist. The number of
suckers does not disprove scientific evidence about Earth Sciences.

Of course. Nothing in science is ever proved. Evidence is produced to
support a theory, but false positives can always exist. Perhaps it's
Jesus YHVH playing malicious games on the scientists, or really Ming
the Emperor's Spaceship using Cosmic Ray-guns. You can rule things out
by tests that fail, but the tests that pass only show that you have
found one (of many, or the one and only?) possible cause to explain
something.

The more you can make predictions that come true, the more confidence
you can have on the elements of the theory.

Any explanation has to account for all of the known data. Any
explanation that works well by excluding some data is rejected for
further discussion. Once an element fails because it is contradicted
by any piece of known data, it is permanently excluded as a time
waster. Denialist crackpots keep trying to sneak back into the
discussion debunked theories that failed the tests in the past -- they
hope a new generation and a lazy generation will fall for the debunked
theory without checking it out. Suckers exist. Con-men exist.
Psychological sciences have mapped the sociopathic mind.

The Citizen Bob loons have been debunked but $16,000,000 of ExxonMobil
fraud money means a constant supply of them to wear out their betters
correcting the lies told by criminal racketeers.

Scientists have collected the courtroom evidence of science crooks
used by Exxon.

It's part of the scientific investigations, to find out why false
premises are constantly reinserted after failing the tests.

...Says the con man from Texas, Citizen Bob. Because anonymous
strangers say so on usenet does not make it true. There are suckers.
There are con men.

global warming science

Global warming is already under way. The evidence is vast and the urgency of
taking action becomes clearer with every new scientific study. Some of the
most obvious signs are visible in the Arctic, where rising temperatures and
melting ice are dramatically changing the region's unique landscapes and
wildlife-as well as people's lives and livelihoods. Across the globe, other
early warning signs include melting glaciers, shifting ranges of plants and
animals, and the earlier onset of spring.

Global warming is caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other
heat-trapping gases that are emitted primarily by the burning of fossil
fuels and the clearing of forests. These gases remain in our atmosphere for
decades or even centuries.

The profound impact rising temperatures have had in the Arctic provides a
window into a future we may all experience. With continued warming, we can
expect more extreme heat and drought, rising sea levels, and
higher-intensity tropical storms. At risk are our coastal property and
resources, the livability of our cities in summer, and the productivity of
our farms, forests, and fisheries.

We can't avoid all the consequences of global warming, but committing
ourselves to action today can help ensure our children and grandchildren
inherit a healthy world full of opportunity.

Don't let truth stand in the way of a red-hot debunking of climate
change

by George Monbiot

The science might be bunkum, the research discredited. But all that
counts for Channel 4 is generating controversy

Were it not for dissent, science, like politics, would have stayed in
the dark ages. All the great heroes of the discipline - Galileo,
Newton, Darwin, Einstein - took tremendous risks in confronting
mainstream opinion. Today's crank has often proved to be tomorrow's
visionary.

But the syllogism does not apply. Being a crank does not automatically
make you a visionary. There is little prospect, for example, that Dr
Mantombazana Tshabalala-Msimang, the South African health minister who
has claimed Aids can be treated with garlic, lemon and beetroot, will
be hailed as a genius. But the point is often confused. Professor
David Bellamy, for example, while making the incorrect claim that wind
farms do not have "any measurable effect" on total emissions of carbon
dioxide, has compared himself to Galileo.

The problem with The Great Global Warming Swindle, which caused a
sensation when it was broadcast on Channel 4 last week, is that to
make its case it relies not on future visionaries, but on people whose
findings have already been proved wrong. The implications could not be
graver. Just as the government launches its climate change bill and
Gordon Brown and David Cameron start jostling to establish their green
credentials, thousands have been misled into believing there is no
problem to address.

The film's main contention is that the current increase in global
temperatures is caused not by rising greenhouse gases, but by changes
in the activity of the sun. It is built around the discovery in 1991
by the Danish atmospheric physicist Dr Eigil Friis-Christensen that
recent temperature variations on Earth are in "strikingly good
agreement" with the length of the cycle of sunspots.

Unfortunately, he found nothing of the kind. A paper published in the
journal Eos in 2004 reveals that the "agreement" was the result of
"incorrect handling of the physical data". The real data for recent
years show the opposite: that the length of the sunspot cycle has
declined, while temperatures have risen. When this error was exposed,
Friis-Christensen and his co-author published a new paper, purporting
to produce similar results. But this too turned out to be an artefact
of mistakes - in this case in their arithmetic.

So Friis-Christensen and another author developed yet another means of
demonstrating that the sun is responsible, claiming to have discovered
a remarkable agreement between cosmic radiation influenced by the sun
and global cloud cover. This is the mechanism the film proposes for
global warming. But, yet again, the method was exposed as faulty. They
had been using satellite data which did not in fact measure global
cloud cover. A paper in the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-
Terrestrial Physics shows that, when the right data are used, a
correlation is not found.

So the hypothesis changed again. Without acknowledging that his
previous paper was wrong, Friis-Christensen's co-author, Henrik
Svensmark, declared there was a correlation - not with total cloud
cover but with "low cloud cover". This, too, turned out to be
incorrect. Then, last year, Svensmark published a paper purporting to
show cosmic rays could form tiny particles in the atmosphere.
Accompanying the paper was a press release which went way beyond the
findings reported in the paper, claiming it showed that both past and
current climate events are the result of cosmic rays.

As Dr Gavin Schmidt of Nasa has shown on www.realclimate.org, five
missing steps would have to be taken to justify the wild claims in the
press release. "We've often criticised press releases that we felt
gave misleading impressions of the underlying work," Schmidt says,
"but this example is by far the most blatant extrapolation beyond
reasonableness that we have seen." None of this seems to have troubled
the programme makers, who report the cosmic ray theory as if it
trounces all competing explanations.

The film also maintains that manmade global warming is disproved by
conflicting temperature data. Professor John Christy speaks about the
discrepancy he discovered between temperatures at the Earth's surface
and temperatures in the troposphere (or lower atmosphere). But the
programme fails to mention that in 2005 his data were proved wrong, by
three papers in Science magazine.

Christy himself admitted last year that he was mistaken. He was one of
the authors of a paper which states the opposite of what he says in
the film. "Previously reported discrepancies between the amount of
warming near the surface and higher in the atmosphere have been used
to challenge the reliability of climate models and the reality of
human-induced global warming. Specifically, surface data showed
substantial global-average warming, while early versions of satellite
and radiosonde data showed little or no warming above the surface.
This significant discrepancy no longer exists because errors in the
satellite and radiosonde data have been identified and corrected."

Until recently, when found to be wrong, scientists went back to their
labs to start again. Now, emboldened by the denial industry, some of
them, like the film-makers, shriek "censorship!". This is the best
example of manufactured victimhood I have come across. If you
demonstrate someone is wrong, you are now deemed to be silencing him.

But there is one scientist in the film whose work has not been
debunked: the oceanographer Carl Wunsch. He appears to support the
idea that increasing carbon dioxide is not responsible for rising
global temperatures. Wunsch says he was "completely misrepresented" by
the programme, and "totally misled" by the people who made it.

This is a familiar story to those who have followed the career of the
director Martin Durkin. In 1998, the Independent Television Commission
found that, when making a similar series, he had "misled" his
interviewees about "the content and purpose of the programmes". Their
views had been "distorted through selective editing". Channel 4 had to
make a prime-time apology.

Cherry-pick your results, choose work which is already discredited,
and anything and everything becomes true. The twin towers were brought
down by controlled explosions; MMR injections cause autism; homeopathy
works; black people are less intelligent than white people; species
came about through intelligent design. You can find lines of evidence
which appear to support all these contentions, and, in most cases,
professors who will speak up in their favour. But this does not mean
that any of them are correct. You can sustain a belief in these
propositions only by ignoring the overwhelming body of contradictory
data. To form a balanced, scientific view, you have to consider all
the evidence, on both sides of the question.

But for the film's commissioners, all that counts is the sensation.
Channel 4 has always had a problem with science. No one in its science
unit appears to understand the difference between a peer-reviewed
paper and a clipping from the Daily Mail. It keeps commissioning
people whose claims have been discredited - such as Durkin. But its
failure to understand the scientific process just makes the job of
whipping up a storm that much easier. The less true a programme is,
the greater the controversy.
