They didn't. A piece of tape was found by building security which held
the bolting mechanism of the door lock in the room that was burgled, and
the astute building guard triggered the whole investigation.
This same thing has happened in 9/11. Astute scientists, engineers and
architects have found the "smoking gun" (just as the guard in watergate)
but criminal public servants and courts have, so far, effectively
blocked the ensuing, REAL, investigation from ensuing and apprehending
the REAL criminals involved.
Seems the criminals did enough homework on watergate to know how to
block the crime from progressing to the courts on 9/11 ...
