Those who put a high value on words may recoil at the title of Jonah
Goldberg's new book, "Liberal Fascism." As a result, they may refuse
to read it, which will be their loss -- and a major loss.

Those who value substance over words, however, will find in this book
a wealth of challenging insights, backed up by thorough research and
brilliant analysis.

This is the sort of book that challenges the fundamental assumptions
of its time -- and which, for that reason, is likely to be shunned
rather than criticized.

Because the word "fascist" is often thrown around loosely these days,
as a general term of abuse, it is good that "Liberal Fascism" begins
by discussing the real Fascism, introduced into Italy after the First
World War by Benito Mussolini.

The Fascists were completely against individualism in general and
especially against individualism in a free market economy. Their
agenda included minimum wage laws, government restrictions on profit-
making, progressive taxation of capital, and "rigidly secular"
schools.

Unlike the Communists, the Fascists did not seek government ownership
of the means of production. They just wanted the government to call
the shots as to how businesses would be run.

They were for "industrial policy," long before liberals coined that
phrase in the United States.

Indeed, the whole Fascist economic agenda bears a remarkable
resemblance to what liberals would later advocate.

Moreover, during the 1920s "progressives" in the United States and
Britain recognized the kinship of their ideas with those of Mussolini,
who was widely lionized by the left.

Famed British novelist and prominent Fabian socialist H.G. Wells
called for "Liberal Fascism," saying "the world is sick of
parliamentary politics."

Another literary giant and Fabian socialist, George Bernard Shaw, also
expressed his admiration for Mussolini -- as well as for Hitler and
Stalin, because they "did things," instead of just talk. In Germany,
the Nazis followed in the wake of the Italian Fascists, adding racism
in general and anti-semitism in particular, neither of which was part
of Fascism in Italy or in Franco's Spain.

Even the Nazi variant of Fascism found favor on the left when it was
only a movement seeking power in the 1920s.

W.E.B. DuBois was so taken with the Nazi movement that he put
swastikas on the cover of a magazine he edited, despite complaints
from Jewish readers.

Even after Hitler achieved dictatorial power in Germany in 1933,
DuBois declared that the Nazi dictatorship was "absolutely necessary
in order to get the state in order."

As late as 1937 he said in a speech in Harlem that "there is today, in
some respects, more democracy in Germany than there has been in years
past."

In short, during the 1920s and the early 1930s, Fascism was not only
looked on favorably by the left but recognized as having kindred
ideas, agendas and assumptions.

Only after Hitler and Mussolini disgraced themselves, mainly by their
brutal military aggressions in the 1930s, did the left distance
themselves from these international pariahs.

Fascism, initially recognized as a kindred ideology of the left, has
since come down to us defined as being on "the right" -- indeed, as
representing the farthest right, supposedly further extensions of
conservatism.

If by conservatism you mean belief in free markets, limited
government, and traditional morality, including religious influences,
then these are all things that the Fascists opposed just as much as
the left does today.

The left may say that they are not racists or anti-semites, like
Hitler, but neither was Mussolini or Franco. Hitler, incidentally, got
some of his racist ideology from the writings of American
"progressives" in the eugenics movement.

Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism"
http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Fascism-American-Mussolini-Politics/dp/0767917189/
is too rich a book to be summarized in a newspaper column. Get a copy
and start re-thinking the received notions about who is on "the left"
and who is on "the right." It is a book for people who want to think,
rather than repeat rhetoric.

this is nothing more than right wing propagandists trying to redefine
terms. Like they made liberal a bad word. Marx was right. It all
comes down to class warfare. Either we let the ultra wealthy
conservatives hide behind their corporations and run the government
for their own personal benefit, or we let the people run the
government for the benefit of all. Fascism is the ultra wealthy
controlling the government. Liberalism has attempted to take that
control back and put it in the hands of The People. Such was the
purpose of The US Constitution. A very liberal document by the way.

Is that so!?

But American industrialists like Henry Ford and
Prescott Bush (Dubya' grandpappy) stuck with the Nazis
much longer. In fact, Dubya' grandpappy almost
went to prison for events that culminated in
action under the Trading with the Enemy Act.

In fact, Bush's business dealings, which continued
until his company's assets were seized in 1942
under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led
more than 60 years later to a civil action for
damages being brought in Germany against the
Bush family by two former slave labourers at
Auschwitz.

American industrialists; The DuPont Family,
the Remmington Family, and JP Morgan tried to
assasinate FDR and put a Hitler style fascist
state in place. They hired General Smedley Butler
to lead the overthrow, but he turned them in.
These industrialists aided the Nazis in various
ways until 1951, with Nazi multimillionaire Fritz
Thyssen as their partner and cohort. Bush
recieved $1.5 million from the proceeds of
Thyssen's death in that year, which was the
start of the Bush family fortune.

Nope.
"The Night of the Long Knives (German:
De-Nacht_der_langen_Messer.ogg Nacht der langen Messer
(helpinfo)) or "Operation Hummingbird", was a purge that took
place in Nazi Germany between June 30 and July 2, 1934, when the
Nazi regime carried out a series of political executions."

That was when Hitler killed off (among others) all
vestiges and connections he had with the socialists
and the leftists in his party, and to conciliate leaders
of the Reichswehr, the official German military. From then
on, the Nazis were a pure Republican...I mean
Right Wing Party.

"During the 1920s and 1930s, the SA functioned as a private
militia that Hitler used to intimidate rivals and disrupt the
meetings of competing political parties, especially those of the
Social Democrats and the Communists. Also known as the
"brownshirts" or "stormtroopers", the SA became notorious for
their street battles with the Communists.[8] "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Long_Knives

"The month of September 1930 marked a turning point in the road
that was leading the Germans inexorably toward the Third Reich.
The nazi party promised to lead the German people away from
communism, socialism, trade-unionism, and the futility's of
democracy."
-- The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich p.199

> Fascism, initially recognized as a kindred ideology of the left,

From "World Book Encyclopedia", 1958, p. 5467:

The name National Socialist German Workers Party does not
correctly describe the Nazi movement. It was neither
socialist nor organized for the benefit of workers. The
name was apparently developed in an effort to win the
support of the working classes....

Nazism was only a part of of the broad social movement
known as Fascism which gained millions of supporters in
many countries during the 1930's....

The industrialists gave financial support to the party
because they thought the Nazis would protect them from
from socialism and communism, and from the increasing
strength of the labor unions.

There is no such thing as "liberal fascism". This is just another
attempt by the right wing to get out of their own problem. They
started fascism, they kept it going. The right wing was sympathetic
to fascist and Nazis before WWII. The right wing supported anti-
semites. And the right wing hasn't changed all that much.

Yeah, they have re-hung curtains, re-done the closets but the core of
freedom hating, fear causing is what ran the repug party in the past
and runs it today.

Re: Who Is "Fascist"?

Yes, thanks for pointing that out.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich "Fritz" Thyssen (November 9, 1873, Mlheim an der Ruhr
February 8, 1951, Buenos Aires) was a German businessman born
into one of Germany's leading industrial families.

...In September 1, 1939 World War II broke out. Thyssen sent
Hermann Gring a telegram saying he was opposed to the war,
shortly before leaving for Switzerland with his family. He was
expelled from the Nazi Party and the Reichstag, and his company
was briefly nationalised. It was returned to other members of the
Thyssen family some years after the war. In 1940 Thyssen took
refuge and moved to France, intending to emigrate to Argentina,
but was caught by the German occupation of France while he was
visiting his ill mother in Belgium. He was arrested by Vichy
France and taken back to Germany, where he was confined, first in
a sanatorium near Berlin, then from 1943 in Sachsenhausen
concentration camp. His wife Amelie instead of escaping to
Argentina joined her husband and spent the whole war in the
concentration camp with her husband. "She had spent the good
times with her husband and would also join him in the difficult
times.[citation needed]" In February, 1945 he was sent to Dachau
concentration camp. He was comparatively well-treated and
transferred to Tyrol in late April 1945 together with other
prominent inmates, where the SS left the prisoners behind. He was
liberated by the Fifth U.S. Army on May 5, 1945[5].

....Thyssen was nevertheless tried for being a supporter of the
Nazi Party. He did not deny that he had been a Nazi supporter
until 1938, and he accepted responsibility for his companies'
mistreatment of Jewish employees in the 1930s, although he denied
involvement in the employment of slave labour during the war.
Thyssen agreed to pay 500,000 Deutschmarks as compensation to
those who suffered as a result of his actions, and was acquitted
of other charges.

Thanks to Revi N. Nair for transcribing this talk from the 2004 Mises
University.

I want to talk about some of the main objections that have been given to
libertarian anarchism and my attempts to answer them. But before I start
giving objections and trying to answer them, there is no point in trying
to answer objections to a view unless you have given some positive
reason to hold the view in the first place. So, I just want to say
briefly what I think the positive case is for it before going on to
defend it against objections.

THE CASE FOR LIBERTARIAN ANARCHISM

Problems with Forced Monopoly

Think about it this way. Whats wrong with a shoe monopoly? Suppose that
I and my gang are the only ones that are legally allowed to manufacture
and sell shoes my gang and anyone else that I authorize, but nobody
else. Whats wrong with it? Well, first of all, from a moral point of
view, the question is: why us? Whats so special about us? Now in this
case, because Ive chosen me, it is more plausible that I ought to have
that kind of monopoly, so maybe I should pick a different example! But
still, you might wonder, where do I and my gang get off claiming this
right to make and sell something that no one else has the right to make
and sell, to provide a good or service no one else has the right to
provide. At least as far as you know, Im just another mortal, another
human like unto yourselves (more or less). So, from a moral standpoint I
have no more right to do it than anyone else.

Then, of course, from a pragmatic, consequentialist standpoint well,
first of all, what is the likely result of my and my gang having a
monopoly on shoes? Well, first of all, there are incentive problems. If
Im the only person who has the right to make and sell shoes, youre
probably not going to get the shoes from me very cheaply. I can charge
as much as I want, as long as I dont charge so much that you just cant
afford them at all or you decide youre happier just not having the
shoes. But as long as youre willing and able, Ill charge the highest
price that I can get out of you because youve got no competition,
nowhere else to go. You also probably shouldnt expect the shoes to be
of particularly high quality, because, after all, as long as theyre
barely serviceable, and you still prefer them to going barefoot then
you have to buy them from me.

In addition to the likelihood that the shoes are going to be expensive
and not very good, theres also the fact that my ability to be the only
person who makes and sells shoes gives me a certain leverage over you.
Suppose that I dont like you. Suppose youve offended me in some way.
Well, maybe you just dont get shoes for a while. So, theres also
abuse-of-power issues.

But, its just not the incentive problem, because, after all, suppose
that Im a perfect saint and I will make the best shoes I possibly can
for you, and Ill charge the lowest price I possibly can charge, and I
wont abuse my power at all. Suppose Im utterly trustworthy. Im a
prince among men (not in Machiavellis sense). There is still a problem,
which is: how do I know exactly that Im doing the best job I can with
these shoes? After all, theres no competition. I guess I could poll
people to try to find out what kind of shoes they seem to want. But
there are lots of different ways I could make shoes. Some of them are
more expensive ways of making them, and some are less expensive. How do
I know, given that theres no market, and theres really not much I can
do in the way of profit and loss accounting? I just have to make
guesses. So even if Im doing my best, the quantity I make, the quality
I make may not be best suited to satisfy peoples preferences, and I
have a hard time finding these things out.

Government Is a Forced Monopoly

So those are all reasons not to have a monopoly on the making and
selling of shoes. Now, prima facie at least, it seems as though those
are all good reasons for anyone not to have a monopoly in the provision
of services of adjudicating disputes, and protecting rights, and all the
things that are involved in what you might broadly call the enterprise
of law. First of all theres the moral question: why does one gang of
people get the right to be the only ones in a given territory who can
offer certain kinds of legal services or enforce certain kinds of
things? And then there are these economic questions: what are the
incentives going to be? Once again, its a monopoly. It seems likely
that with a captive customer base theyre going to charge higher prices
than they otherwise would and offer lower quality. There might even be
the occasional abuse of power. And then, even if you manage to avoid all
those problems, and you get all the saintly types into the government,
theres still the problem of how do they know that the particular way
that theyre providing legal services, the particular mix of legal
services theyre offering, the particular ways they do it are really the
best ones? They just try to figure out what will work. Since theres no
competition, they dont have much way of knowing whether what theyre
doing is the most successful thing they could be doing.

So, the purpose of those considerations is to put the burden of proof on
the opponent. So this is the point, then, when the opponent of
competition in legal services has to raise some objections. (more)''

Fascist Benito Mussolini and socialist Roosevelt held each other in
high regard.
Roosevelt was a Big fan of Mussilini fascism because he recognized
that fascism was the only means to true Socialism.

I would by far rather have the Private Sector run government than have

War is pure fascist socialism. The nationalists subsidize the defense
industry with no-bid contracts, while fomenting conflict abroad. A
revolving door is installed between the military and the defense
industry and retired generals become lobbyists, consultants, and BOD
directors.

But this kind of corporate welfare and inbreeding permeates our entire
social structure. Laws are written to ensure a growing need for prison
beds, now a largely for-profit enterprise. This is why pot will never
be legal; potheads meake great prisoners. They are non-violent and
good workers.

Our society is totally fucked-up. I do hope it collapses completely, so
we can have a fresh start. Too bad we just can't identify more with the
Nazis; their lesson is a good one.

You seem to have answered your own question: Mussolini was a fascist.

Your ridiculous unsupported claims that Roosevelt was a "socialist" and
that "he recognized that fascism was the only means to true Socialism"
are your own demented creations.

The reality is that socialism is a political manifestation in which the
government _OWNS_ the means of production. Fascism is ab-use of
government by the wealthy and powerful in league with the church to
maintain and enhance the power of the owner class. These two political
contrivances are entirely different.

To bad you are so brainwashed, cuz you have some
interesting ideas. But you'll never find truth.
It's pure fascisism, nothing socialistic
about it. But that concept is taboo in America.
Judging from your lingo, you've

A vanity plate for a vain person such as Telemundoh! He's not afraid to
be a kooktard in the newsgroup so maybe he wouldn't be afraid to be
display his kooktard conspiracies on his vehicle? I can see his car
peppered with stickers along the lines of "My other conspiracy involves
persecution" or "Aliens came down and hypnotized me".

You can't do squat as evidenced by your continued lame posts.

Like you're a birthtard? I don't think so, Telemundoh. I don't have
enough chemicals in my house to screw myself up to your level of
fuckwittery..

It takes some profound brain damage to create a birthtard.

Nobody was born in Hawaii. They all came from Asia and got FAKE birth
certificates.

I needs to go to the Lowe's store and then across Highway 18 from the
Lowe's store to the Gestapo Wal Mart store for some oranges so I can sit
on the back end of my trailer this afternoon and eat four oranges. There
is a place near Gallatin Street and Highway 80 that sells discount
wood.I wants to see what they have in the way of cheap plywood, if they
have any.

Even if I did, it still wouldn't mess me up enough to become a
birthtard.

Really, what would possibly be the point of anything else? Birthtardism
is hard to top for laughs, Telemundoh. I know you really believe it, but
it's so off the wall batshit crazy, it cracks the vast majority of us
sane people up. And it makes you "fascinating" to my shrink ex-GF, she
would love to talk to you in person. Shit, I bet she would pay you a
decent amount of cash and buy you dinner to sit with her a couple hours,
and just talk. I'm being serious, she would love to study you guys.

So how is your therapy coming along? From my vantage point you don't

I don't need therapy Telemundoh, I don't believe in crazy shit.

From your vantage point??

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! That's a good one! Seriously, my ex would love
to sit down and talk to you. Just a couple of hours, and your identity
would be kept confidential. She wants to publish an article on you guys
and your beliefs.

Ok J, I gave it a shot...(This is to her, she lurks...)

What happened in Hawaii? You really don't know?

Obama was born there, as any non-birthtard knows. All the evidence shows
he was born there. What do you think happened? I won't laugh...much.

And Jack Lord probably wasn't his daddy. I doubt Tom Selleck was either.

My viewpoint about you is only reading what you have posted. You are
ignorant about what you post but you will not acknowledge it. The reason
why could range from being a whack job to being a consummate lier.

Being a whack job Troll fits in there as the most likely possibility.
Since you generate crap posts in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 a month
must keep you pretty busy.

Well, I going to guess because they're both white, and one of his
(Obama, just in case you got confused) parents was obviously not white,
and his mother was white, so you try to figure it out if you can.

Hawaii (With a Republican Governor) has confirmed the BC posted online
is valid, so game over for you birthtards. The birth announcement in the
paper is just added nails into you birthtard's skulls. The hospital
where he was born said he was born there, and it goes on and on. You
poor birthtards seem to have some agenda behind your doubts as to where
he was born. I wonder what that might be...hmmm? (Scratching my chin and
pondering what makes a birthtard a birthtard)?

You must be shitting yourself, since you haven't seen Reagan's, Bush
I's, Clinton's (His name was Blythe when I was born, I think), and W's
BC, long or short form, either, so how do you know they were "natural
born" Americans? I would imagine you never saw any BC of any other POTUS
either, did you? You never gave a second thought about where they were
born, did you? Again, I wonder why......hmmmmmm.

And you wonder why I, and hundreds of millions of other people laugh at
you birthtards?

You do give the gift of laughter though, so you aren't totally
worthless. And eventually, you should make some fine worm food.

ROTFL. She's real Telemundoh, is a child shrink, and lives less than 8
hours away from you.

Time for a telethon.

Let's see, Labor Day is taken, so April Fools day would fit in so many
ways. There must be a celebrity birthtard they can get to host it, but
I'm not aware of any celeb birthtards, so far. They could come on, and
play heartbreaking clips where some birthtard's wife or whatever says,
"Everything was so wonderful, we had a happy family, and then, in Sept,
08, it happened. The man I have loved for over 20 years was gone, and in
his place was someone, some thing I didn't even know. He had turned into
a birthtard!! I was devastated, the kids asked me, "Mom, what's wrong
with Dad? I....I had to tell them that (sobs) their father had an
extreme case of birthtardery!!My little girl climbed into bed with me
and we held each other and cried all night. The worst part is that John
doesn't think anything is wrong, but he spends all night, every night,
online with the other people who have developed this awful disease,
raving about Obama being born in Kenya. He's so sick, but he won't do
anything to help himself!! There are times I think about taking the kids
and leaving, but you don't leave someone because they have become ill,
even if it's a mental illness, not a physical one!!!"

That would be a classic.

Jurgens movie, The Devil Below.
Curt slaps Heinie and says, Sing it Heinie!

The same same theme music (if you can call that crap music? I call it
Crap.We stomped that nazi crap out of those nazis in World War Two) is
in The Battle of the Bulge Henry Fonda Robert Shaw movie which was on
teevee this morning.

Curt Jurgens was a Good guy.He protested leetle Adolph Hitler's nazi
crap.Curt Jurgens sat out World War Two in a nazi klink.

I have some Jurgens kinfolks. Some Welsh kinfolks too, I also have.
