Since then the stock market has crashed, tens of billions of dollars
of personal wealth have evaporated, and the government has committed
$700 million to bail out financial institutions.
A government which long has been morally and intellectually bankrupt
is now financially bankrupt too.
It is all very, very sad.
At the time of my early childhood, ~80% of Americans owned their own
homes. Today, less than 20% of Americans own their own homes; the rest
are either purchasing them from a bank or renting (or, even homeless.)
We have generated debt and written IOUs which we can never pay off, in
our lifetimes. These debts will be passed off to our children and their
children; soon we will begin writing IOUs which our great grandchildren
will be left with. At this date, I have not seen one of my public
servants take a reduction in pay and/or benefits and perks. They are
beginning to appear as a ruling class over a peasant class, to me.
The "bailout" money is all going to the greedy/crooked
individuals/institutions/groups which got us into this mess in the first
place. Those in power keep chanting the manta of how we will have to
learn to suffer and get by with less, that somehow, we don't deserve
what we have obtained with the work of our own two hands and minds, that
taxes, fees, licenses must be raised and levied against the poor--they
appear to be suffering little. We are printing money which can only be
given worth by the sweat and labors of future generations.
There was a very popular term and used frequently during the depression,
"Rome burned while Nero fiddled." And, in hindsight, pointed out all
the mistakes made by the Romans which destroyed and let their
way-of-life fall into ruins--a civilization which had once conquered all
the known world--at that time. I see similar here ... at this time.
Indeed, this "bailout" money is being used to maintain high values in
property and goods; it is working against the very people who are being
left with this MAGNIFICENT BILL and i.e., we are cutting our own throats
to maintain the rich and powerful lifestyles of our public servants,
corporate heads, etc.
It is time to "kickbutt", throw out the greedy-crooks, take out the
garbage and clean up the mess ... dare we fiddle about now?
I have lost faith that we will, in time. Indeed, we empower the very
criminals which got us here, to save us--somehow, I question if this
will be successful, or not ... end-of-story.

JS

Oh, wait. I know what you can do.
You can blame it on Obama (even though he won't be seated for another 25

If you even doubt him, a little; Rush is already attempting to make it
sound like Obama is responsible! A guy who has not even held office for
a day!
However, Nixon began the criminal ear, IMHO, Regan gave it real
momentum, and Bush has given it a hearty shove! Again, IMHO ... Clinton
was just an ignorant jerk who "couldn't keep it in his pants ..." :-(

WE LOVE* OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA
The prevailing view in many quarters is that the stock market crash of
1929 was a failure of the free market that led to massive unemployment
in the 1930s-- and that it was intervention of Roosevelt's New Deal
policies that rescued the economy.
It is such a good story that it seems a pity to spoil it with facts.
Yet there is something to be said for not repeating the catastrophes
of the past.
Let's start at square one, with the stock market crash in October
1929. Was this what led to massive unemployment?
Official government statistics suggest otherwise. So do new statistics
on unemployment by two current scholars, Richard Vedder and Lowell
Gallaway, in their book "Out of Work."
The Vedder and Gallaway statistics allow us to follow unemployment
month by month. They put the unemployment rate at 5 percent in
November 1929, a month after the stock market crash. It hit 9 percent
in December-- but then began a generally downward trend, subsiding to
6.3 percent in June 1930.
That was when the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were passed, against the advice
of economists across the country, who warned of dire consequences.
Five months after the Smoot-Hawley tariffs, the unemployment rate hit
double digits for the first time in the 1930s.
This was more than a year after the stock market crash. Moreover, the
unemployment rate rose to even higher levels under both Presidents
Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt, both of whom intervened in
the economy on an unprecedented scale.
Before the Great Depression, it was not considered to be the business
of the federal government to try to get the economy out of a
depression. But the Smoot-Hawley tariff-- designed to save American
jobs by restricting imports-- was one of Hoover's interventions,
followed by even bigger interventions by FDR.
The rise in unemployment after the stock market crash of 1929 was a
blip on the screen compared to the soaring unemployment rates reached
later, after a series of government interventions.
For nearly three consecutive years, beginning in February 1932, the
unemployment rate never fell below 20 percent for any month before
January 1935, when it fell to 19.3 percent, according to the Vedder
and Gallaway statistics.
In other words, the evidence suggests that it was not the "problem" of
the financial crisis in 1929 that caused massive unemployment but
politicians' attempted "solutions." Is that the history that we seem
to be ready to repeat?
The stock market crash, which has been blamed for the widespread
suffering during the Great Depression of the 1930s, created no
unemployment rate that was even half of what was created in the wake
of the government interventions of Hoover and FDR.
Politically, however, Franklin D. Roosevelt could not have been more
successful. After all, he was the only President of the United States
elected four times in a row. He was a master of political rhetoric.
If Barack Obama wants political success, following in the footsteps of
FDR looks like the way to go. But people who are concerned about the
economy need to take a closer look at history. We deserve something
better than repeating the 1930s disasters.
There is yet another factor that provides a parallel to what happened
during the Great Depression. No matter how much worse things got after
government intervention under Roosevelt's New Deal policies, the party
line was that he had to "do something" to get us out of the disaster
created by the failure of the unregulated market and Hoover's "do
nothing" policies.
Today, increasing numbers of scholars recognize that FDR's own
policies were a further extension of interventions begun under Hoover.
Moreover, the temporary rise in unemployment after the stock market
crash was nowhere near the massive and long-lasting unemployment after
government interventions.
Barack Obama already has his Herbert Hoover to blame for any and all
disasters that his policies create: George W. Bush.
Being from the GREAT STATE of ILLINOIS - where we have not , but 5
crooked governors, I have to agree that this situation can't be blamed
on Obama. If you check what he's done so far in his career since
college, you'll be able to see plainly that he can't possibly be
responsible for any of the current problems were dealing with.
Thank you Impeached Clinton!
All his life he has grown up to rely on Government and has done
absolutely nothing about it!
All during his adult life he has done absolutely nothing but be a part
of Government!
Now he will be leader of that Government!
Governemnt isn't the solution - IT IS THE PROBLEM.
And ObaMa0 will do NOTHING to "Change" THAT!
My take is almost 180 degrees from that.
When gov't (the legitimate one--of the people, by the people, for the
people) oversees public water/sewer/dams, power distribution which
provides for all, roads which provide for all, a health dept. which
protects us all from plagues, disaster relief for major disasters, a
military to protect us from FOREIGN POWERS, insures security in homes,
food, clothing, drugs, education etc. It is a good thing ... and the
gov't IS the people providing for themselves, NOT a benevolent
dictatorship (or worse) providing for the people. It IS Americans
taking responsibility for their responsibilities.
When gov't begins supporting any minority to the point of denieing the
majority, it is pure evil ... the constitution, IMHO, allows protection
to minorities so they are not unjustly harmed, nor denied any creator
given rights, it never suggests that a minorities will be held over a
majority--it denies that.
Obama has made noises that he wishes to return us to these American
principles and halt the slide of America towards 3rd world country
values ... again, IMHO.
My job is simply to give him a chance ...

JS

No, not at all ... other than if he played a very small insignificant
part--i.e., as much as any public servant (president on down) who has,
ever, voted against the majority of the peoples' will--or supported
legislation to do such.
However, I can thank Nixon, Regan, Clinton, the Bushes, etc. (PRIME
examples) And, complete blame cannot even be placed at their feet, as
the supreme court, and other courts, have not "interpreted" the
constitution correctly, as supported by the forefathers and their
writings and letters ... this needs to be fixed also.
Now, if Obama, once he takes office, does not trust the people and
support their wants, needs and petitions, he will need to be tossed into
this same group, which go on engaging in Un-American activities ...
This, I believe is logically obvious ...
