McCain was too liberal for him, but he still campaigned for him,

No, not at all. when I coached college debate, one of my teams was
very successful running an affirmative case that stopped the US
President from using his power to bailout the economies of other
countries, like Clinton did by bailing out the Mexican economy in the
mid-90s. He gave over $50 billion to Mexico without congressional
approval.
