Well dot you finally got one thing right. I am from the south. I'm
American by birth and Southern by the grace of God. Outside of that
you missed on nearly all of it. You also seem to forget that Ganassi
had engine chassis package that was a great deal better than everyone
elses that year too. He had been dominate for a while. Still JPM
with that advantage JPM drove the wheels of the car to beat some of
the best IN CART. Yet it took testing, effort and to quote an old
book he likely had the "Unfair Advantage", but I doubt you know who
wrote it. No he didn't as far as I know cheat. That's a big
difference. Still he had the talent, courage, skill and experience to
drive the car to a title.
Now just how many CART drivers that have run the IRL 500 have done
well. That year JPM won and Vasser was about 6th. Top ten would
have to be considered a good run with those same handicaps. You
mentioned Bruno. Wasn't he in the lead or very near it when one AJ IV
sent him into the wall and he spent the next months in Methodist
trying to recover. He was a rolling chicane when he was in a wheel
chair recovering. Thankfully he is back in the car, and no IV didn't
mean to do it. It was a racing accident, but one that could easily be
argued shouldn't have happened. In years past IV wouldn't have made
the race. Some at his age are ready for that level of racing. He
needed more seasoning then and may still need it. Time will tell.
Then there is one Paul Tracy. He did ok Id say. Officical finish was
second, wink wink. Everyone with eyes could see what happened. You
sure need to make sure that IRL 500 winner is there to promote the
rest of the IRL season. Might see a few come over and try it again
this year too, but after the way they treated Paul and Bruno's
accident I would be a bit surprised to see it happen. Being scared
might not be stupid or cowardly. It might make good sense. I seem to
remember one Mario Andretti's testing a car that looked more like an
airplane than a race car. Thankfully he was ok.
Lots to talk about since 2003 which might have been old enough to have
still been a sell out. Did the IRL 500 sell out last year? No and
some will say its never sold out. You can always get GA tickets.
Again thats true, but till the last couple of years selling the seats
hasn't been a problem. Pre split the waiting list was decades long.
Now it doesn't exist. It goes from one of toughest tickets in sports
to get to a walk up race day and get a reserved seat.
Lets see since 03 we had a new song for the 500. "I am Indy" or was
it Mindy?? Either way Gene Simmons is gone just like a line of others
that have tried to promote the 500 since the split. How bout John
Mellencamp or Elaine Irvin Mellencamp. None have helped.
Now Al Jr HAD a good career. It should be over or at the very least
not running this 500. His well documented off track problems, and his
on personal life should be taking priority over running another 500.
His daughter has shown more strength than most every adult I have ever
met. Hopefully he will be able to get past his issues and enjoy
watching her become the great woman that I personally would bet just
about anything on her becoming. I wish them both well, but hopefully
he isn't running the 500.

fan that he ended up working in the paddock for Scott's team just for fun.
Anyway, the reason why he asked me had to due with what happened in 1986.
He had to bail all his work mates out of jail because they were drunk and
disorderly. He thought that bringing me along would be a 'calming influence'.
