do you see that post title in my sig?

see where the hyphen is?

"(tweaked for reference-free retelling)"

that's how i typed it at the top of the window when i started writing
that post.

and when i was done typing up that title, i copy and pasted it into
the subject field in the "new post" google form.

then, after finishing writing that post, i hit the send button.

the thing didn't post, though.

instead, there was a google error message of some sort saying there'd
be a delay or somesuch.

so i closed the google window for a few moments and then later clicked
on my hyperlink to misc.writing, relaunching the google groups listing
of misc.writing.

and voila, the new post was there.

i read it again to see if it was as funny as i thought it was when i
was composing it.

eh?

so so.

then i clicked back to see what other discussions were going on in mw.

yikes.

just a bunch of titles sure to be full of amusing banter (one-sided)
of the meltdowns of the resident semi-dangerous self-loathing
hatemongers.

but instead of reading any of that stuff, i decided to reread my own
post again to see if i could somehow make it more interesting and
amusing.

that's when i noticed the goog weirdness.

in the subject line, instead of the hypen being where i had typed it:

"(tweaked for reference-free retelling)"

it was moved:

"(tweaked for reference free-retelling)"

huh?

i was pretty certain that i didn't make that typo when i originally
wrote it, so i checked the source of my copy-and-paste at the top of
the article... and sure enough, it was just as i had written it:

"(tweaked for reference-free retelling)"

NOT

"(tweaked for reference free-retelling)"

can anyone explain how that could happen?

have you ever seen a copy-and-paste action move a hyphen like that?

...

oh well.

one of these days i suppose they'll figure out how to make these
stupid computers and software programs work right.

but until then, i guess we all just have to waste more precious time
noticing and writing about all of the stupidity.

I always do a ctrl-A and a ctrl-C to put the post onto my clipboard
before hitting send, in case I get a mystery message from Google.
"Fatherland Security has determined that your post exposes the nation
to immediate terrorist attack. In compliance with the Patriot Act,
revised, and a Fuhrer letter, it has been removed forthwith."

yeah, me too.

but i didn't have to use the clipboard back-up this time because the
post ended up showing up shortly after the google error message.

maybe i wasn't clear about what happened.

as you may have noticed over the years, when i create a new thread (or
change the subject line in an existing thread), i include the subject
title of the post at the top of the new post.

i do that for many reasons, one of which is so people can easily
respond to the title of the post as well as any of the content.

especially since many of my posts ask questions in the title.

including the subject title in the article itself makes it much easier
to keep the context going for anyone reading these silly thingers.

so anyway, after i compose the post in the google window, i copy-and-
paste the title into the subject line. so there's no logical reason
that it should be any different than the text at top line of my post.

i never retype it.

i ALWAYS copy-and-paste it.

i'm very consistent about that lazy efficiency thinger.

so anywho, if you check out the post:

newly created joke (tweaked for reference-free retelling)
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.writing/msg/c3a07433f9f50712

you'll see that the hyphen in the subject line is in a much different
position than the hyphen in the text at the top of my original post.

compare:

Subject Line:

newly created joke (tweaked for reference free-retelling)

Top Text:

newly created joke (tweaked for reference-free retelling)

a closer comparison zoom:

newly created joke (tweaked for reference-free retelling)

newly created joke (tweaked for reference free-retelling)

see?

different.

the hyphen somehow jumped over the word "free".

that happened either during the copy-and-paste action, or in transit
as it posted to google.

Gawd.

i never thought that i would ever be longing for the days when i was
one of the very few people who was stupidly paranoid.
