I've tried from Windows Update and from the full install.

It locks up on the "Checking Product Key"
This is an OEM install on a laptop fresh back from Sony after replacing the
HD, so it's untouched at this point (yes, it has been activated).

i've tried a number of things, including patching Norton up to the latest
version, installing all other Windows Updates, etc.

The error in the svcpack.log files says:
77.522: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.

Hello,

I had similar problem. GreenieLeBrun and antioch in this group helped
to solve the problem. Take a look here.
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_thread/thread/264c07949c03266d/31ee8f3c25df0b1c#31ee8f3c25df0b1c

Hope this helps.

==============================================
I had to re-register licdll.dll, and re-registering it allowed me to
complete the Service Pack 2 installation.

"Click Start, Run, type in the following:
regsvr32 licdll.dll
Click OK, then OK again when the confirmation window pops up.
Reboot and retry the service pack install.re-register lic.dll. On
Windows XP this same file is named licdll.dll, and re-registering it
allowed me to complete the Service Pack 2 installation. "

Also I noticed that after shutting down Symentec AV, SavRoam.exe was
running in task manger processes. I had to end this process.

Amit

No luck-- I had actually tried that too and it still locks at the same
"Checking Product Key" spot.

Hi,

I just had this issue one some computers at work (hanging at the SP2
installation at "Checking product key" phase), and did some googling
for this. At a web forum I found the solution. A guy named Matt had
this problem and phoned Microsoft. After a second hour session on the
phone, the Microsoft tech found the reason, it had to do with OEM inf
files not being recognized by the SP2 installation. Below is the
resolution email that was sent to Matt. This procedure also solved the
problem on the computers where I work.

Hi Matt,

There are 3 steps which we have to do to get the SP2 installed.

Steps are:

1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that
directory.

3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see
the files in the folder.

6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it
to desktop (by copying it to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1
from c:\windows\inf.

7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and
start the installation of SP2 and it should go fine.

Please let me know the result of the above steps.

Thanks & Regards,

Thanks so much for posting this solution. I've been looking for hours, and this was the it! The service pack is now installing, moving past the checking product key which I ended task half a dozen times trying one solution after another....all which didn't work.

Perhaps EggHeadCafe.com can provide a decent newsgroup reader so that
others might possible see just what you are referring to.
As it stands, this post is rather pointless.

At least it provides the References: header.
Then you can go to Google Groups Advanced Search with a Message-ID.

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/b8efbd1663c8fdf7

I wish they would discourage the practice of completely rewriting the Subject text
since sometimes I actually have the original thread in my cache [1]
but I'm not using a View which makes that obvious.

[1] Not this one, of course, Oct. 2006. ; )
