Where are you trying to install it from, the full file or the Microsoft
site?

If the latter try downloading the full file to your HDD and install
from there.

I would add that it is currently best, after download(to CD/DVD if
preferred) to disconnect from the net - disable AV(in partic Norton) - make
sure your system is 'clean' - scan for everything, then install. Engage AV
etc reboot after install.
Then you will need to get all the other 60 odd security/criticals from WU
Home - it would take a long time but in the current climate of post SP2
install probs, I would be inclined to download, four or five at a time, to
disk or C:\ by the same method - you don't have to do them all at once.
If downloading to save to the HDD, first create a folder in C:\ - call it
SP2 and download to that and install from there - with AV off and
disconnected from the net.
OR get the free disk from MS - it will take a few days to arrive.

Thanks GreenieLeBrun and antioch for your replies. I appreciate your
help very much.

As advised, I disabled AV and disconnected from the net before the
installation.

I tried both ways. 1) downloading full file to hard drive and then
install 2) installing from Microsoft website with web interface.

In both cases it failed to install with the same errors. "An internal
error occurred." "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete."

I am pasting part of the log svcpack.log

I will greatly appreciate your help to solve this problem.

I am very disappointed to hear your bad news Amit.
And so will Mow - hope he is still following this one.
It does not hold out much hope for the upgrade I hope to be doing on my
neighbours system this weekend.
I did find a 'favourites' last night, that I had put to one side some months
ago -
there could be a solution in there -

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Update.exe+extended+error+code+%3D+0x1ffe054f&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Quote:-
"It looks to me that the installation have some problems with obtaining
the ProductID for the computer (if this is fatal or not for the
installation I don't know). "

The log you posted I think is missing the last line - something like this -
don't know if it makes any difference to the info as a whole -

"Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action
compliance. "

With any luck Mow or another may be able to read something out of these
various links - it I am afraid it is beyond my knowledge - I am just
collating
all the various ways and means so far employed to get SP2 loaded.
I think that MS provide an initial free troubleshoot by phone for this type
of problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=1&gprid=6527

To Mow
If the OP has not got WGA/WGAN downloaded, would that make any
difference???? with reference to the Prod ID issue mentioned above.

In the meantime, I think I will delay my attempt with SP2.

Seems to be a problem with files but as usual there's not enough info
with the messages in the log. You could try activating the SP2 verbose
logging to supplement it or use FileMon instead. E.g. FileMon filtering
on just the package name would show you all the file accesses it would
be trying, including the writes to its log. Hence you would have an interleaved
record of file accesses associated with each log message. Presumably
FileMon + verbose logging would provide that much greater level of
interleaving.

Thank you Robert, GreenieLeBrun and antioch for your suggestions and
help.

I found the solution here.
http://forums.wugnet.com/windows/XP-SP2-install-ftopict401341.html

I had to re-register licdll.dll, and re-registering it allowed me to
complete the Service Pack 2 installation.

"Click Start, Run, type in the following:
regsvr32 licdll.dll
Click OK, then OK again when the confirmation window pops up.
Reboot and retry the service pack install.re-register lic.dll. On
Windows XP this same file is named licdll.dll, and re-registering it
allowed me to complete the Service Pack 2 installation. "

Also I noticed that after shutting down Symentec AV, SavRoam.exe was
running in task manger processes. I had to end this process.

Hope this info helps someone here.

Thanks guys again. This is a great group.

Thanks,
Amit
