There's another vendor too I ordered from. I'll get the info later.
It's all from China. Shipping is high. So get several rolls to make it
worthwhile. The ordering system is not automatic. U will be emailing
them for clarification. Great customer service. More later.

It seems that Makerbot Industries are either consistently out of stock
of 1.75mm black and now natural filament, or that they are embargoing
their stock to ship with new bots. Does anyone have a good, reliable
and reasonably priced alternate source for filament? Any that should

If you go to the site above and submit an order, Simon will email you
to PayPal him money. I was hesitant at first but found out later you
have 30 days to file a complaint with PayPal and get your money back
if you don't get your product. Also, the shipping is very high if you
order one roll. So order a bundle to save money. Here is the list of
shipping prices he gave me per amount of filament:

First 0.5kg 23.29
Additional 0.5kg 4.55

Verify that with him. There will be other cost like a PayPal charge
for him to convert one currency to another. Ask a lot of questions.
There is nothing automatic about this type ordering. It's all
customer service on their end. If you order enough rolls then you
will beat the U.S prices from Makerbot or Ultimachine. What I use to
pay $45-50 here in the U.S now cost $80+ per roll today in the U.S.
Ridiculous!

The prices I believe are close. The same issues as far as ordering,
currency conversion, PayPal payment also apply. Again, ask a lot of

I have had a good experience with repraper as well, no need to
contact, was able to do everything via the website. Good plastic, a
little thinner than Makerbot, but consistent. If you are using an
unmodified MK7/8 with plunger you might have some trouble.

Also, ordered on a Friday, had it on Wednesday. From China! Takes
longer than that from Brooklyn..

My only beef with buying it from Makerbot is the shipping costs.
Something like $15 for a single spool to Nebraska. It gets better (in
$/spool) as you order more, but buying one or two spools at a time
will cost you a pretty penny for shipping.

10 Kohm/cm doesn't sound terribly conductive, but that can't be right because it says the same for 1.75mm and 3mm. Sounds like you could make printable resistors out of it, though.

At 10k/cm it's not practical as a conductor per se, but it would be excellent for objects that are to be used in an anti-static environment.

They offer a 1 kg high tolerance satin 1.75 abs spool for $45.

What do you recommend as a 'good' modification to the MK8 to better handle repraper's plastic?

I've read various threads on this group about the makerbot plungers wearing down.  Is this a bigger issue when using thinner filament?

Looks awesome!  Did you ever sell the kit on eBay?  From the comments it sounds like I can find a proper spring from a home depot spring grab bag.

Looks like there is also a bearing , do you have any recs for this part? I am a software engineer first and foremost, all this real world stuff is new to me.  I placed my first mc master order this past Monday. :)

Are you still using these, ala "eating the dogfood" ? 

I've got a dual extruder, has anyone tried using two of them?

I haven't started selling the kits, though I gave a few away at Maker Faire. The bearing is a 623. I have some more of these kits put together containing a spring, a bearing, and a 10mm countersink-headed M3 screw that fits the tight space between the idler and the motor. If you want one, I'll just have to figure out the shipping so that I know what to charge.

Since MBI got caught-up enough on replicator shipments to put the Mk7 back up on the store, I've been dogfooding it constantly and loving it. I don't have a dual extruder (not yet, at least), but I've seen pictures of others using it in that configuration, and all of the feedback has been positive.
