Google Translator Toolkit now supports J-to-E
Just noticed that the Google Translator Toolkit now supports J-to-E translation. I tried it out by creating a blank translation memory (TM) and a new glossary memory (which I created in Google Docs as a .csv spreadsheet file). As far as I can tell, I selected options so that neither of these memories will be shared (perhaps depending on what Google defines as... more »

hitting the right note
I am working on a documentary on a British band (depeche mode) at the moment. It is basically about how hard the final World tour they did was due to one of the members' serious illness found out during the tour and also one of them lost his father when he was away. After one song, a ticker (burned caption, テロップ) appears on the middle... more »

Leave out ??????????????
I may be missing something here, but if something is not first in the world, it is presumably not patentable, so it might be rather important to emphasise that primacy in the context of patent application. Tim

回金方式 for Letters of Credit
Happy New Year, all! I hope it has been a good one so far. I'm stuck on the following term: 回金方式 used to describe the way a certain company deals with letters of credit. They provided the Japanese reading for it the first time they mentioned it and call it unique to their company, and indeed a search... more »

Mysterious kanji
Happy New Year everyone! 今年もよろしくお願いします。 Here is my first question of the new year! I am doing a translation that talks about the five energies and I cannot find 沖散させる [chuusan suru] in any dictionary--online and paper. The context is 金気を沖散させる. I have tentatively translated it as disperse... more »

Taimenshiki Kitchen
Is anybody familiar with a " 対面式キッチン "? I see plenty of pictures of it on a Google image search, but don't know how to render this in English. At first I thought it was a kitchen with an "island" counter (allowing people to stand on both sides of the "counter" when preparing food, so as to be "face to face"), but this seems inconsistent with the pictures.... more »

Use of mei (name) [Q]
In the same set of patent office actions, I am not sure about the use of 名 in the following: この通知書と同日に発送した特許庁長官名による指令書に記載した 届出がないときは、 At present I have translated it as "in the name of", thus: if there is no submission as stated in the directive in the name of the... more »

Seiritsu again [T]
Thanks to Nick and to Minoru Mochizuki for your help with this one. The Glova dictionary proved most helpful with this and other terms in these texts. Regards Tim

Seiritsu again [Q]
A directive (shireisho) relating to grounds for rejection of a patent application finishes with the sentence: この期間内に届出がないときは、特許法第39条第8項の規定によ り協議が成立しなかったものとみなします。 This is presumably a standard form of words, with which I am unfortunately... more »

Three different types of full time jobs in IT localization industry
Hello Yakkers, A long-established recruiting and translation services agency noted for respectable business practice (with which I am acquainted for years) asks me to broadcast the following job offer announcement for three different positions, which I pass along for possibly interested persons.... more »
