Interestingly enough, I did a little search on what would be
required for a person to upgrade to Windows 7. Came across these
comments. Most are gripes, only few are favourable toward
Microsoft. I guess the Windows shills missed this one, LOL!

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I have an issue with MS pricing, yes the 49 and 99 upgrade prices
are pretty decent.

I bought and paid for a retail version of Ultimate, which was
supposed to have all the bells and whistles i wanted, however
this never came to pass.

IMO MS should give the users who purchased the most expensive OS
at least an Upgrade to 7 for their troubles.

Personally i dont like Vista, was it ok, i guess. I used it for
ahile and went back to XP. The release was a joke, the unsupport
hardware was a pain, and the bloatware was a joke. After the sp1
things seem to calm down a bit, but i never really went back to it.

I have installed and used W7 x64 on my Hp Dv6500 since beta and
it is awesome, i would more than happily pay for the upgrade from
Vista Ultimate to win7 Ultimate, but for an upgrade price not
full this full price bend you over crap MS is doing.

Overall if MS would offer the ultimate Vista users a little
something in return for the fact they got nothing then hey i
would be good with that.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I loaded and ran the beta..was not impressed. Xp is the swan
song. Soon as my support is over, I am going to look at the OSX's
and Linux's.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I'm pretty sure very soon we'll see an upgrade discount for the
premium versions too.

Fri Jun 26 11:33:59 PDT 2009
Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I'm still confused.

Upgrade FROW WHAT?

I currently have machines running Win2000 (yes with one gig),
Windows Vista basic, and Win7RC1.

So WHAT IS THIS $99 upgrade good for?

I don't mind trashing one of the above just to install a fresh
Win7 Pro, but I cannot find out what the word "upgrade" implies!

Fri Jun 26 11:34:40 PDT 2009
Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

Every body I know is still using XP, No incentive to upgrade
without a more permanent price or a proper way to upgrade with
having to do a clean install.

I will spend days just trying to get WOW back up an running

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I'm running the 32-bit RC1 (Ultimate) on my laptop and it's a
nice OS. I was going to go with the 64-bit Ultimate for my
desktop, but at $319, it isn't going to happen. Guess I'll be
using XP a while longer. I like the new OS, but not that much.

Fri Jun 26 11:59:46 PDT 2009
Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

Can I upgrade from Windows-7-RC1?

How about Win2K?

I'm still not sure what I can upgrade FROM!

Fri Jun 26 13:56:45 PDT 2009
Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

My guess ... most folks will not be able to upgrade from XP to
Win 7. I have a desktop built for Vista which I am running Vista
Ultimate on. When I tried to install Win 7 Beta on that machine
(Dual Boot), I was unable to do so. It turned out that the Video
Card, a part of the Mother Board, did not work with Win 7 Beta. I
have since installed a better Video Card on the Machine, and Win
7 RC runs just fine. But the machine was built for Vista. The
Video card worked fine with Vista. But it had to be replaced for
Win 7.

So if folks running XP and/or Vista think they can easily
upgrade, they may be in for a rude shock. Win 7 may not be in
their immediate future, even if they buy the upgrade ... and I
foresee nothing but bad publicity for MS in general and Win 7 in
particular.

That said, I must say that in my opinion, Win 7 is a better OS
than Vista ... and I actually like Vista ... and superior in
almost every way to XP. I think that one you get Win 7 running
properly, you'll like it, you may even love it!

But don't be shocked when Win 7 won't run on your computer, even
if it is one of the latest up-to-date Vista machines. My
suggestion is to try Win 7 RC before you buy Win 7, particularly
if you are running XP.

Again Microsoft shows how much it loves its customers...

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I'm going to wait until Spring of 2010 before I upgrade to
Windows 7, I need a new laptop with more free space anyways, and
I rather wait for the reviews. It better to wait than it is to
rush out there and find out it's not any good.

Fri Jun 26 18:25:55 PDT 2009
Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

It is very clear that Microsoft does not want to sell Windows 7
Ultimate. They want all the consumers like myself who foolishly
purchased Vista ULTIMATE {WHICH IS ANYTHING BUT AN ULTIMATE
PRODUCT} to switch to Apple. If I am going to submit to greed, I
will switch to Apple in all future purchases. At least they will
stand behind their promises and product. Microsoft's current
business practice has boosted Apples sales 100%. I look for
Microsoft to help push Apples market share to 20% worldwide
within three years.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

I ran WoW over Win7 beta on a 1Gb, 1.9MhZ machine with no
troubles. This machine dual-boots into XP home or 7 beta (now
dead until I have time to load rc1).

If it runs WoW, it's good. so far so good :)
[/quote]

MY FAVOURITE COMMENT is next. Here's why. I boot into Ubuntu
9.04, it boots up quickly. I am ready to run any application of
my choosing. Even with Windows XP (I only use it for games), it
goes on and on and on, to complete rebooting, hard disk
continually grinding away, before I can load a game. I like
strategy games like Red Alert III, C&C Generals, C&C Zero Hour,
etc. For a decent gaming experience, I have to wait for all the
hard disk activity to come to a close.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade FAQ

We have Ubuntu installed at work. It is very quick on some fairly
plain jane hardware. IF win7 is going to require a major hardware
purchase then I really am leaving windows for good. The beta
version loaded on my laptop was fine, not as fast as the work
computer, but not the dog vista is. Now I am wondering if that
was because it was crippled to begin with. What happens when all
the apps are loaded that did not get in the beta ?

It has been a year since I have purchased a new laptop that came

to come out rather than upgrade right into Windows 7 the moment
it comes out.

I have been reading all the information about MS and its issues
with the software they produce. I am very annoyed to find that MS
has decided to pursue the “bottom line” (money) in their business
pursuits, instead of great customer service and good products,
regardless of what they sell. I have had my run-in's with their
Customer Service and it is not pretty. It never seems to matter
what you call them for, you get a major run around and before any
resolution is reached, you end up having to escalate it just to
get it fixed.

Any good company that wishes to keep its market share strong and
healthy really needs to provide a good product, and keep its
consumers happy. No excuses if the product is flawed, but prompt
and considerate assistance will always win.

In my opinion, MS has failed miserably in its product lines and
in particular, its "Customer Service" in all areas I've
experienced. I will not purchase their products if I can find an
alternative that provides what I want with no hassles.
Of course there is no way I would ever use their flawed browser.
I uninstalled it from my laptop because it was awful. IE was
never my favored browser even at its inception, and has only
gotten worse over the years. Why MS consistently tries to pull
the wool over consumers’ eyes with this piece of software is
beyond me. My answer is – I do not use it.

I have an older single CPU machine running Vista with no
problems. My wife has a very old machine running XP. It has
gotten very slow and will need an upgrade. I purchased the $49
Windows 7 upgrade not to upgrade her machine, but to stockpile
the OS until her XP dies. Shouldn't be too many more years. Then
I will upgrade her MB and do a clean install of 7. In short, I
get the discount on the OS and install it when I need it. Avoids
having to buy it at full price some day when I have to have it.

I waited in line to overpay for Vista Ultimate (signature edition
at that). This is one Microsoft fan that is tired of being taken
not just for granted but taken advantage of just for being a
windows fan.I believe i will just go backward to xp and skip 7.

After putting up with the MS promises for the past 20+ years,
I've heard the same old crap too often. I switched to a MAC in
1999 but kept an MS laptop for business. Now, in 2009 there is no
reason to keep both. I don't think 7 will be any better than
Vista which was shittier than XP which was a 12 step ahead of the
crap they called MS2000, so as of today, I've deleted Parallels
on my MAC and will switch EVERYTHING I USE over to MAC which by
the way, I can upgrade in Sept for $29. SCREW YOU MICROSOFT, YOU
JUST DON"T GET IT!

Goodbye Microsoft you frickin' dinosaur. You 're so hung up with
yourself, you forgot about us, the average computer user who
wants something easy to use and not pay $199 every time you come
out with some piece of shit update

I am absolutely furious about this! I spent a lot of money
getting a laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate on it last year, and
I find out that I wasted all of it because the Ultimate Extras
weren't coming, the OS was freaking slow and some of the hardware
included on the system wasn't even supported by the OS until much
later!

And I picked it over a laptop that was $300 cheaper with a larger
screen that only had Vista Home Premium. I feel like Microsoft
tried to rip my heart out for being a Windows user. Over the last
year, I have been closely watching the Linux world because I
believe on this cycle of OS upgrades, I'm heading for Linux
because I simply cannot stand Windows Vista anymore. It is
driving me up the wall.

A couple weeks ago, I finally got around to trying out the RC of
Windows 7 and I was impressed. I wondered if Microsoft was
punishing me for spending so much money on a laptop including
Vista Ultimate by torturing me with the Windows that Vista should
have been. I liked the new hybrid Start menu dock, the interface
is more uniform across the board, and the special 3D effects make
my inner geek cry with joy. Add to it that after installing all
the software I normally use, I find that system performance is
substantially better than Windows Vista. I'm actually seeing
performance levels comparable to when I used Windows 2000 on a
Pentium 4 in the public libraries (which was really fast, even if
it was annoying having to use Win2k when Windows XP was already out).

When I saw that Microsoft was thinking about offering free
upgrades to us poor schlubs that got computers with Vista, I was
overjoyed. Then I saw that it had the time frame of purchases
from July of this year to January of next year. I thought, "Ok, I
didn't see any mention about Vista Ultimate, only the other
editions, so maybe Microsoft will give it to us for free even if
we bought it last year." Now the Windows 7 Pricing was announced,
and I see that Windows Vista Home Premium and Professional users
are rewarded with upgrades at discounted prices, but the Ultimate
edition is at full upgrade price of US$220!!!

NOW I'M REALLY UPSET! I SPENT MOST OF MY HARD-EARNED AND SAVED
MONEY TO BUY THAT LAPTOP WITH WINDOWS VISTA AND NOW I'M TOTALLY
SCREWED! AND I'M HEADING TO COLLEGE IN THE FALL!

I can't work in these conditions for a whole school year or two,
I'll die of stress dealing with crap on my laptop! And software
vendors are beginning to drop XP support because XP is NINE YEARS
OLD!!!! The last OS that stuck around as long as XP did was
Windows 98SE, and that was quickly killed off when XP Service
Pack 2 was introduced. And I have a feeling I will need Windows
on my laptop too....

Please, if anyone from Microsoft reads these comments, PLEASE
take pity on us Windows Vista Ultimate users and give us a free
upgrade!!!!

Well i would love to give windows 7 a try because i hate windos
Vista because of all the hardware issues.

I have owned windos Vista Home Premium since day one of it's
release and i still think XP is the best OS, I bought three
outher computers for my GranDaughters and installed XP on all of
them because i did'nt want them to experience this nightmare
Vista OS bed cause its a real pain and a waste of time and money.
I'm going with the $49.99 upgrade fee for windos 7 even if i do
have to buy some new hardware because at this point i have
nothing to loose.

#22 rlarryp

Usually "upgrade" implies having a previous operating system,
which it checks during installation....A "full" or stand alone
copy doesn't care about previous op systems..Other than that you
have a complete program...lp

#23 JetCityMan

I checked at both the Amazon and Fry's Electronics websites for
this upgrade and neither one so much as mentions the 64 bit
version of the product. So how do I get the 64 bit version to
upgrade my Vista x64 system? Are both the 32 and 64 bit versions
included on the same disk? And if they are, why doesn't it say so
somewhere?

i especially like this comment:

"I don't get it. It seems like Windows is a ton of work. To administer it,
to install it, to maintain it, and even just to work with it. All day long
you are making things that are only compatible with Microsoft when the
majority of computers don't run Microsoft software. Check out how
incompatible with the rest of the world you are:
* Windows has NT instead of Unix like everybody else, so Windows users have
viruses and botnets while Unix users have free Web server software and PHP
and Ruby and Perl and so on.
* Windows has DirectX instead of OpenGL like everybody else, so while we all
have hardware-accelerated graphics on our smartphones with built-in OpenGL
chips, you guys rarely see 3D even on your PC, unless it's in a game.
* Windows has legacy Microsoft text encodings instead of UTF-8 like
everybody else, so you guys make Web pages with bad characters in them and
I have to fix them for hundreds of dollars per hour.
* Windows has HTML 3.2 instead of HTML 5 like everybody else, so you guys
are seeing basically a 10 year old Web. Also, IE 8 is half the speed of
even the slowest modern browser. It's remarkable to me you can do without
typography also.
* Windows has Windows Media instead of ISO MPEG-4 like everybody else. That
is like having an optical disc drive that can't read CD and DVD. About 90%
of the world's digital media is in ISO MPEG-4, including all of iTunes and
all of YouTube.
I guess if you use all Microsoft products you don't notice this? Or maybe
after playing Microsoft's various upgrade games and activation and
installing all your apps over again to go from XP to Windows 7, you don't
mind installing Firefox and iTunes and EasyPHP and a dozen other popular
Windows apps that make a Windows system into the lamest Unix in the world.
When you can put Ubuntu on almost anything, and there is not only WINE but
also a free virtualizer to run your whole XP, I sincerely don't get why you
would bother going to Vista-based Windows. What kind of cool things are you
expecting to happen on NT/DOS over the next few years? What is worth the
hundreds of dollars in licensing fees, but even more, what is worth all
this I-T work? What are you going to get on the other side?"
