    Hi Kent,

I seem to be having problems posting to the site so I'm trying again -3rd time lucky !!

I have found your great grandfather Archibald Black born 17th July 1863 at New Cumnock in Ayrshire. He appears to be on  the 1871 Census at Dalmellington and the 1881 Census at Sorn (both in Ayrshire). Perhaps his family were miners moving from place to place where they could find work?
Still have no idea about the "Omgbank" location. Could be an area in one of these towns or a building .

    Kind Regards,
    Linda

My thanks to all of you who have assisted. I have heard from Linda Brown
in the UK that my dates were wrong! My great-grandfather was born in 1863,
not 1865, in New Cumnock, Ayrshire.

Now I have a destination in mind for our coming trip. Peace to you all.

    Hi Kent,
Hope this post works! Have tried to post info already but it has not
    appeared?!
Found your great grandfather - Archibald Black born 17th July *1863 *at New
Cumnock, Ayrshire to parents James Black and Agnes McLachlan.
Looks like he could be on 1871 Census living at Dalmellington and on the
1881 Census at Sorn (both in Ayrshire). Could be his family were miners and
moved around according to where they could find work.
The "Omgbank" location is still a puzzle maybe an area or a building's name

Good afternoon everyone - this problem illustrates the weakness of
handwritten records - All the comments I have seen to date are valid but
the location Unthank is also a possibility. Wikipedia shows Angus,
Dumfries, Lanarkshire and Moray. Any of these could be relevant - if we
had occupational details of any parties it might give a clue about
    migration within Scotland.

    Hope this helps

    Hi again,
Looks like his family moved around a bit (probably miners looking for
work?). He appears to be on 1871 Census at Dalmellington, Ayrshire and the
1881 Census he is at Sorn. All these places are in Ayrshire.

Hi there I had a quick search and your great grandfathers birth certificate reads Archibald Black, born 17th July 1863 at 3hrs 15. Born in an area called Craigbank(a miners row of small houses) in New Cumnock (which was a coal mining village). Born to parents James Black & Agnes McClachlan married 18th June 1858, New Cumnock. If you google Craigbank, New Cumnock you should be able to find out some information.  Hope this helps. Kent just another small point for future reference, I see your great grandfather put on his passport application that he emigrated in 1874 and lived in the USA unbroken until 1880.  Many people had to lie to be able to obtain a passport, your great grandfathers parents and siblings were very much still living in Ayrshire and between 1874 and 1880 Archibald had siblings born in Ayrshire, I would find it highly unlikely your great grandfather lived in USA age 11 without his parents but I suppose anything is possible, maybe he went to America and lived with family and then came back. I have found Archibald travelling on the ship Furnessia with his mother Agnes and siblings to New York arriving 28th Dec 1881, his father James probably went out before that date to sort things out for the family before they all went over, and I see Archibald was naturalized in 1884.  Anything else you need help with just ask.  Regards Tracey

I dont think there is such a place as Omgbank. Its more likely to be Annbank and possibly someone has written this as a joke meaning "Oh my god" bank! as most of the villages I know are open to slagging from especially bigger towns but its all done in good taste. David

Hi all - With the greatest of respect to all, if you read the post by
myself about 8 posts backwards an awful lot of cyberspace (and reading)
would be saved. The birth IS showing as 17th July 1865 in the IGI and it IS
shown as Craigbank. So please Kent don't go down dead-ends. I posted this
at about 2-00 this morning and was curious to find other suggestions that
you might be wrong about the birthdate and other interpretations of
    "Omgbank" -

Now Kent - if it helps, go to www.old-maps.co.uk and put New Cumnock into
the search box. Ignore the map which opens and look at panel on right of
page. Click on the second one down - which is dated 1860 - 5 years prior to
the birth, enlarge by clicking once on the map and scroll to the extreme
bottom left of map. ---- Craigbank. Strangely, my dad was born about half a
mile nearer New Cumnock on the same road.... a place called The Legate....
and a few years later moved half a mile the other side of Craigbank to
    Burnfoot.

Very best of luck..... there is not much left of Craigbank but I think
    there is a war memorial.

Davy Torbit the mystery has been solved, it is Craigbank in New Cumnock. When reading the document of Kent's great grandfathers passport application it does look like Omgbank. Hopefully Kent will be able to tack down distant relatives still in New Cumnock, I'm sure if Kent drops a line to the Cumnock Cronicle local paper, some people will come forward.

Stuart please remember the IGI is notorious for being wrong, it has my x4 grt grandfather dead before the 1841 census, he lived till 1898. Kent's grandfathers birth is registered on his birth certificate 17th July 1863 along with two other births in 1863, the certificate doesn't even remotely look like a 5 it definitely reads 1863 not 1865. Hi Stuart,

With the greatest respect to you, the posts which have appeared today on the Ayrshire Google Websites made by myself were in fact posted early afternoon on Saturday. For some unknown reason my posts were not appearing on the site whilst other peoples were. I then emailed Kent direct with all the info I had found as I presumed (wrongly as it now seems) that my emails were not being received by the site. I have no clue as to why it took nearly 24 hours for my posts to be shown!!

As for the birthdate of Mr Archibald Black, I also checked Familysearch IGI's and Scotland's People. In both cases the date of birth appears as 17th July 1863.

It would appear that the unfortunate delay in messages appearing on site has caused a few of us to be researching and posting similar or different.

But at least Kent has the correct info of date of birth and location of Craigbank now.

    Regards,
    Linda B
