Description: The subject matter of the Ayrshire History Group is the history of the county and its people, and the local history of its parishes, towns and villages. It replaces the Research Postings section of the Ayrshire History website (www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk).

Fullarton area of Irvine, Ayrshire
Can anyone tell me about the Fullarton area of Irvine? It was south of the river and part of Dundonald Parish. In the 1841 and 51 censuses I have found addresses of various people at Boat Stabs, Guthres and Quay. It seems that they might be the same place, or close to each other, but the names have dropped out of use by 1881.... more »

memorial stone in Montgreenan woods
Does anyone know anything about the memorial stone near the ruins of Montgreenan Castle dedicated to Corporal John Smith, Company B, 10th Ohio Volunteers, died 25/11/1863 at Chattanooga. I assume Corporal Smith was a local man who had emigrated to Ohio and died in the battle of Chattanooga during the American Civil War. The memorial stone has... more »

David Black and Jannett (Wasson-Wason-Watson) Black
They emigrated from Scotland in 1860, but whether to Canada or US I cant find a record. They settled in Amboy, Oswego, New york near the Wasson family that had come here previous. I believe Davids parents were Andrew Black and Isabel Wood of Old and New Cumnock. David and Jannett (or Jannett) were from Barr and Dailly. Can anyone help me... more »

Kirkconnel, St Conal's Church Raven
I know that Kirkconnel lies just inside the Dumfries and Galloway are but the fact this it's so close I'm hoping that you will all give me some leeway, plus I am an Ayrshire boy. The reason for the post is I was at the ruins of St Conal's Church after having walked over the old road from Muirkirk. In the old church... more »

Mineral line. Oswald's Bridge
I am a regular visitor to Ayrshire, especially the Coylton area, where my wife has family. We were walking part of the River Ayr Way at Easter. Can anyone enlighten me as to the history of what appears to be a possibly narrow-guage mineral line running from the woodland west of Oaklea at NS386228 (did it go any further south?), through Cutting Wood to the one-time viaduct across the river at Pheasant Nook, NS400234 (presumably linked to the sandstone quarry just to the east of the viaduct). And was the 'rusty' burn from Mossblown (draining old coal workings?) that is now culverted past the quarry part of the same enterprise? Any information gratefully received.... more »

Maps
Re Scottish maps, try [link] Go to Digital Sources, then maps of Scotland. There are town plans as well. The National Library of Scotland has a wide range of digitised maps, free to view and download from the earliest maps in the 16thC onwards. Hope this helps Sheena

Mills in Dundonald Parish
Hi Can anyone give me details of Leith's Mill, now a farm called Lavemill, or Scullochmill in Dundonald Parish? Scullochmill was the centre of smuggling activity in the 18th century and was situated near Loans. It was owned, or rented, by a Dunlop family to which I am trying to find a connection. Sheenash... more »
