The book is about the Tatu State mine and my stories of a young boy growing up in the village in the 1940`s. If anyone is interested in this book I am selling it for NZ$50.00 plus air postage.

Hi Sharon,
I don`t know much about the Cairns family in Ireland, but my Great Grandfather, Robert was born in Antrim,Ireland in1853,
He was married in Glasgow, Scotland in 1875 and set sail for Oamaru, New Zealand in1879.
My Grandmother once told me that Robert`s father , William Cairns who was born in Scotland was to marry a Irish  girl, so changed his name to Kearns and went to Ireland. After they married they changed back to Cairns, but I don`t all the details.
Maybe you can fill in the missing links.
Cheers,
John Cairns.

I shall have to have a look into the names.......my ancestor was Martin.....he was one of many children being born in Ireland according to the Census, but I cannot find a record for his birth/baptism! I have found them for all of his siblings born Ireland/Scotland! He also goes "missing" later in is life, leaving wife and large young family. He is a man of many mysteries!
