Bush: US should have bombed Auschwitz
Bush Visits Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial; Says US Should
Have Bombed Auschwitz
ARON HELLER
AP News
Jan 11, 2008 06:07 EST
President Bush had tears in his eyes during an hour-long tour of
Israel's Holocaust memorial Friday and told Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice that the U.S. should have bombed Auschwitz to halt
the killing, the memorial's chairman said.
Bush emerged from a tour of the Yad Vashem memorial calling it a
"sobering reminder" that evil must be resisted, and praising victims
for not losing their faith.
Wearing a yarmulke, Bush placed a red-white-and-blue wreath on a stone
slab that covers ashes of Holocaust victims taken from six
extermination camps. He also lit a torch memorializing the victims.
Bush was visibly moved as he toured the site, said Yad Vashem's
chairman, Avner Shalev.
"Twice, I saw tears well up in his eyes," Shalev said.
At one point, Bush viewed aerial photos of the Auschwitz camp taken
during the war by U.S. forces and called Rice over to discuss why the
American government had decided against bombing the site, Shalev said.
The Allies had detailed reports about Auschwitz during the war from
Polish partisans and escaped prisoners. But they chose not to bomb the
camp, the rail lines leading to it, or any of the other Nazi death
camps, preferring instead to focus all resources on the broader
military effort, a decision that became the subject of intense
controversy years later.
Between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people were killed at the camp.
"We should have bombed it," Bush said, according to Shalev.
In the memorial's visitors' book, the president wrote simply, "God
bless Israel, George Bush."
The memorial was closed to the public and under heavy guard Friday,
with armed soldiers standing on top of some of the site's monuments
and a police helicopter and surveillance blimp hovering in the air
overhead.
"I was most impressed that people in the face of horror and evil would
not forsake their God. In the face of unspeakable crimes against
humanity, brave souls — young and old — stood strong for what they
believe," Bush said.
"I wish as many people as possible would come to this place. It is a
sobering reminder that evil exists, and a call that when evil exists
we must resist it," he said.
It was Bush's second visit to the Holocaust memorial, a regular stop
on the visits of foreign dignitaries. His first was in 1998, as
governor of Texas. The last U.S. president to visit was Bill Clinton
in 1994.
Bush, making the most extensive Mideast trip of his presidency, was
accompanied on his tour by a small party that included Rice and
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
At the compound, overlooking a forest on Jerusalem's outskirts, Bush
visited a memorial to the 1.5 million Jewish children killed in the
Holocaust, featuring six candles reflected 1.5 million times in a hall
of mirrors. At the site's Hall of Remembrance, he heard a cantor sing
a Jewish prayer for the dead.
Shalev presented Bush with illustrations of the Bible drawn by the
Jewish artist Carol Deutsch, who perished in the Holocaust.
Deutsch created the works while in hiding from the Nazis in Belgium.
He was informed upon, and died in 1944 in the Buchenwald camp. After
the war, his daughter Ingrid discovered that the Nazis had confiscated
their furniture and valuables but had left behind a single item: a
meticulously crafted wooden box adorned with a Star of David and a
seven-branched menorah, containing a collection of 99 of the artist's
illustrations of biblical scenes.
The originals are on display at Yad Vashem. The memorial recently
decided to produce a special series of 500 replicas, the first of
which was to be presented to Bush.
Debbie Deutsch-Berman, a Yad Vashem employee whose grandfather was
Deutsch's brother, said she was proud that Bush would be given her
relative's artwork.
"These are not just his paintings, they are his legacy, and the fact
that they survived shows that as much as our enemies tried to destroy
the ideas that these paintings embody, they failed," she said.
Later Friday, Bush was to wrap up his three-day visit to Israel and
the Palestinian territories with a visit to Christian holy sites in
Galilee before departing for Kuwait, the next stop on his Mideast
tour.

Jesus, why do neocons have such a fascination with bombing things as a
way of solving problems? What exactly does he think (and I use the
term loosely) would have happened if Allies had bombed the shit out of
the place? They didn't have the kinds of equipment we have now, and
the likelihood that we might have liberated the prisoners in the camp
was slim; in fact, we would have killed most of them, anyway. In
addition, they would have alerted all other camps, and all other camps
would have been fitted with rockets, or increased patrols in the area,
and we would have lost any spying capability we had at the time.
Gawd, these people are stupid. Do they honestly think that dropping a
bomb on something solves a problem?

And yet, it didn't remind of of a certain place he runs, in which
people who have been rounded up randomly, based on the color of their
skin, and thrown in a cell and held for an indefinite period without
trial or due process of any kind, and tortured whenever it's deemed
necessary.
Do these bozos GET that there are levels of "evil," and that the fact
that Auschwitz and Gitmo are on different levels does not make Gitmo
"not evil"?

Radio navigation of a sort. By 1939, civil airliners could navigate by
'radio beacons', which involved getting a 'fix' upon an identifiable
transmitter (whose position was known) and working out the position
from the angle of the beam. By using a 'direction finding' aerial,
planes could plot a course this way. They could also use commercial
radio stations. But the nasty Germans turned off all radio
transmissions at the approach of hostile aircraft (as we did in
Britain). Bombers had to rely on plotting their position with the aid
of the sun or the stars, which wasn't much good in bad weather. You
could, of course, use ground landmarks, but the lack of long distance
fighter escorts until post 1943 meant that you had to fly at night,
when only rivers or the coastline were really visible.Otherwise,
navigators had to fall back upon dead reckoning (using the compass and
changing course by a calculation based upon speed and time). But
headwinds could put a plane wildly off course.
> I'm also willing to bet that
> Jamieson really has no idea what "dead reckoning" means...
Oh, I think that he does.....I'm not sure that you know much about
wartime bombing, though....
Anyway, back to the subject. It wasn't really until 1941 that the RAF
developed a navigation technique using electronic navigation beams
directed at the target....such as 'Gee', the first such, I think. But
even then, it only got you to the target area. Most RAF bombing (and
most USAAF bombing) was strategic, therefore, not tactical...it
involved 'plastering' an area with HE and incendiaries.
Tactical (or 'pin point') bombing was something that happened using
fast lighter aircraft (such as Mosquitos or Mitchells) at a lower
level. There were two sorts - that carried out by fighter bombers or
rocket firing planes in support of ground troops, or raids on specific
targets such as the 'Shell House' in Copenhagen. But the aircraft used
had limited ranges.
So how were the allies supposed to bomb Auschwitz? Plaster the place
like they did Ploesti? (A raid of equivalent distance) Tactical
bombing was out of the question, owing to the distance involved.
Another point. Auschwitz was unusual. It was a mass extermination camp
in amongst other camps built to serve the I.G. Farben complex. The
other extermination camps, such as Sobibor, Belzec etc - were
temporary affairs, dispersed amongst forest and country areas.

I'm certain he could rationalize doing that, and then simply

So, what Canyon's trying to say is, they could have surgically bombed

Exactly. if they were bombing an entire city, they would have a
reasonable chance of being successful. But there was no such thing,
really, as a "surgical strike." Even now, with modern equipment, those
are difficult to pull off. Back in 1942, they were impossible. And
apparently, Canyon forgets where Auschwitz was; it was a remote camp
in the middle of Poland.

And if the purpose was to "liberate" the prisoners in such camps,
carpet bombing likely would have simply sped up the process. There is
little doubt that Nazis who felt their lives to be in danger, would
have executed the prisoners first.
The problem with the neocon mindset is that they see everything as a
Schwarzenegger/Stallone/Willis movie. They think they can set the
bombs, and they'll only kill the bad guys. I simply don't see any way
bombing the camp itself would have had any role in stopping the
extermination. I mean, I loved "The Bourne Ultimatum," you know? But
when Matt Damon drove the car off the parking garage roof, that would
have been the actual end of the chase, ya know?

Not gonna happen. His entire frame of research consists of throwing a
few words into Google, and repeating the first thing that comes up
that matches his pre-disposed mindset. Of course, he also rarely
checks the veracity of the source. That's why he repeats (ad nauseum)

Interesting allies the right wingers here have...
<ROFL> Apparently, the leftist loons have a list of names that they
try out on me on some sort of a schedule.. I've been called John
Parker, Henry Selvetilla, Mary Lou, and a few others I can't
recall.... .since I've been on here...
and the places they claim I've been posting from is even more loony,
since a good deal of my posts are traceable and I also have a web site
that tells quite a bit about my life... it is so much fun to watch
the pathetic little fools muddle about in their ignorance. Little
Lochner is apparently convinced that I once lived in Chicago, yet I
know he can't produce a single shred of evidence of that..
Somebody once claimed that they had proof that I was an apartment
manager somewhere, again with no evidence...
and Shook has me down as pretending to be one of his chatroom buddies,
but still no evidence...
These loons are so full of fantasies about me they have no room for
any facts....
...so here's some clues... Montana, a little while in Colorado and
Brazil, quite a while in the Atlanta area, and then in the Tampa Bay
area... a few other places here and there that I won't talk about,
but never anywhere near Chicago.... I do fly through there.. Hub for
United Airlines, you know.. I have spent a few nights there on
business years ago, long before I did anything on the internet... I
will be flying through there again next week..... I'll drop you
line,
Exactly. Auschwitz was a camp designed for killing massive numbers of
people. I fail to see how carpet bombing the camp would have prevented
those deaths. It simply would have made them more efficient.
I don't see the bombing of Iraq stopping any of the ethnic cleansing
that's going on there...

He was telling poor, dumb Brian Carey that I was a Wiccan and former

seem to have anything to do with the topic at hand, but you know

You really have a serious reading problem. Bombsights were very
elaborate machines, and required a significant amount of training just
to operate. And the discussion started with a suggestion by the
dumbest man to ever occupy the White House (and I mean "occupy" in
every way) that somehow the Holocaust may have been thwarted by
bombing Auschwitz. Bombing the camps at Auschwitz probably would have
just killed the same number of people more quickly; it's unlikely they
would have been able to liberate the camp by bombing.
So, let's see...
We have one guy whose father was among the thousands of pilots from 14
countries who flew in the Battle of Britain, one of the greatest
defeats of the Nazis in the War, saying that bombsights were
inefficient and that pilots often flew by dead reckoning.
We have another guy who probably Googled a couple of words and made
shit up beyond that, who rarely says anything that's actually true,
and who seems to know nothing about anything to do with bombsights,
with Norden being one of the most famous ever, saying that bombsights
were just plain nifty, and suggesting that Bush was right, and we
should have bombed Auschwitz.
seriously, do you KNOW how stupid you are? Obviously you don't.
(And before you repeat yourself yet again... Newt Gingrich was first
elected in 1978, but he lost twice before he won. You do the math. And
Nixon was not impeached in 1973, for Chrissakes. Everyone knows that
he was never actually impeached, but that the Articles of Impeachment
were passed in late July 1974. Hmmm... that's the same year Gingrich
was walking the halls of Congress as a liberal Republican trolling for
money and support. Oh -- and the think about Archibald Cox... it was
said after he was gone. See, Cox did not stop being a "fine man" the
day he was fired.)
Yeah, in an odd way, I guess it's nice to know that as bad as bush is,
he could be worse...

"Throw me that lipstick, darling, I wanna redo my stigmata."
+-Jennifer Saunders, "Absolutely Fabulous"
Missions to photograph nearby military targets often pictured Auschwitz by
mistake. You can see lots of details, like which buildings had enough heat to
melt the snow off their roofs.
On the other hand, Bonde spends most of his time in online dictionaries
trying to make sure that he can split hairs and state that he never said
what he did or that he actually said what he didn't. Bonde is one of the
few people I've actually killfiled because of his utter intellectual
dishonesty. He exists only to make inane commentary which he always later
denies having meant. Being both a fool and a liar, he's just not worth
paying any attention to. Even "Canyon" at least appears to be what he
actually is: a psychopathic stalker. Bonde's pretence of objectivity and
intelligence is an insult.
At the time it was active. All of the camps were situated near the
geographic center of the occupied territory. In order to believe "The
US should have bombed Auschwitz," you would have to believe that a US
bomber could have flown over half of German-occupied Europe undetected
and able to drop enough bombs to level the place. Britain was the only
available place to launch such a strike, and the distance was well
over 500 miles, at least.

Oh, please. How many bombs do you think we could have gotten to the
target, and how many of them could have been delivered accurately? And
given that their main purpose was killing Jews and many, many others,
I fail to see how you prevent that by bombing them first, anyway.
Unless you get every single German in one shot, you don't really do
anything, except force the Germans to kill the prisoners faster. And
that is in the unlikely event you can fly enough bombers over 500
miles undetected to level the place. And there were five other camps,
anyway; if you destroy one, you haven't accomplished much.
That's true. Canyon isn't even smart enough how to know how to feign
intelligence.
But had problems hitting them and suffered appalling losses. they soon
fell back on bombing coastal cities (e.g. the U-Boat pens at Brest)
while they had a rethink. It was only the appearance of the Mustang in
large numbers as a long range escort that saved the day. Even then,
the Eight Airforce continued to engage in strategic bombing from a
high altitude.
>
> > I'm not even sure their bombers had the range to

Certainly up to 1943. And after that, only heavy bombers. (It was
difficult enough trying to drop supplies to the Warsaw partisans in
1944, and that was only done using Soviet airfields.) Tactical (i.e.
low level precision bombing) would be ruled out, since such aircraft
didn't have the range (or the fight cover, perhaps).
Dr. Barry Worthington
Yes, but such photo-recce pictures were taken by specially adapted
high flying long range aircraft - usually fast stripped down fighters
like Spitfires (usually operating from Italy with drop tanks).
Dr. Barry Worthington
At least Bonde can feign STUPIDITY....
That's part of why I killfiled him. If I've got to deal with right wing
liars, I'd rather deal with the ones that are lying about the facts and not
some prissy little troll who spends most of his time equivocating about his
own words.
There is no particular reason to suggest he has any life from the neck
DOWN, either...
This s from Shook who says:
"When you're (sic) margin is called, that's a liability, not an asset.
If you have an account with $100,000 in it, and you borrow $10,000 to
buy with, you only have $100,000 in assets; until you pay the loan,
that $10,000 is not an asset; it's a liability. When the margin is
called (for shits and giggles, let's say for the full amount of
$10,000), there is no way to say that you haven't lost $10,000. In
fact, you're actually out $20,000, because you're out the $10,000
for the loan and the $10,000 to call the margin."
-- Milt Shook Apr 2007
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.impeach.bush/msg/a39f580c3012e718?hl=en&
...and Milt hasn't yet explained how a $10,000 margin call will result
in a $20,000 loss, presumably above and beyond whatever loss of market
value in stock precipitated the margin call....
>At least Bonde can feign STUPIDITY....
...and from Jamieson who says..
"Incidently, the fact that the Constitution specifies that people have
a right to vote in a presidential election pretty much takes the
choice of having [a presidential election] out of the hands of the
states."
Zepp Jamieson Sun, Sep 3 2006
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.society.liberalism/msg/efb4fcac7b1561cb?hl=en&
...and here's proof of Zepp's ignorance.
"Today, Electors are chosen by popular election, but the Constitution
does not mandate a popular election. The 14th Amendment does mention
the choosing of Electors, but is relevant only when Electors are
elected by popular vote. There is similar mention in the 24th
Amendment. In other words, Electors could be appointed by a state's
legislature, or the legislature could empower the governor to choose
electors. In some cases, state law allows for such appointments if the
popular vote cannot be used to determine a winner, such as if election
results are contested up to federally-mandated deadlines."

Milt Shook made this ridiculous claim on May 6 1997, 2:00 am
in attempt to back up his earlier argument..
"I was a Senate Page for two years when I went to HS in
Maryland. Why is that hard to believe?"
--Milt.Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/talk.politics/msg/45a41b2be7278eed?&q=senate+page
It's not just hard to believe, it's just about impossible to
believe since now, Milt claims to have done it twice...
"Actually, I did misspeak on that one. One year in the House
and one year in the Senate."
--MilT.Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.society.liberalism/msg/06a060ef017bf1a0
Well this may be why he won't talk about it....
Milt claimed to have been a congressional page when Nixon was impeached...
that would have been late 1973
"Um, KNOPP... I was a page in the Congress when the articles of
Impeachment were read into the record. He would have been tried
and found very guilty, as anyone who ever read the accounts at
the time would know. Nixon bowed out, because he knew he would
lose, and because he knew Ford would pardon him."
--Milt.Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.society.liberalism/msg/92d9c5f1857761bc
Then Milt also claimed to have been a page when Newt Gingrich was

Hardly enough time left for Milt to have been a ski instructor..

"I was a consultant for FIVE years. My JOB was to take retailers,
look at how they ran things, and improve their lot. Most of the time,
I could do a report in two weeks. Most of those who followed my advice
are still in business. I only had one failure, and that was because
the owner himself was skimming cash off the top. "
--Milt.Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.politics.usa.republican/msg/2bff5dc5a4ab3669
or was it 13 years?
"I am 38 years old, and have worked in several fields in the past.
I have never made less than $20K, not even when I was 18 years old,
and I am in the midst of a career change. I have worked as a paid
consultant for several political campaigns, and I was a retail

The fact that you don't get that the above is absolutely ironic, given
what you say below is a testament to your stupidity.

I was. There was a reason for it. I have not shared the reason, or any
details, and you are not in a position to claim anything. Essentially,
your assumption that it's a "ridiculous claim" is based on your, well,
assumptions and nothing more.

As pointed out previously, Nixon was never impeached. Articles of
impeachment were passed in July of 1974.

That's 13 years as a manager, salesperson and consultant, not always
simultaneous.
So, so far, you've demonstrated an ignorance of history and no
literacy.

No, I wasn't a congressional page until I was out of my teens. It is
your ignorance of history that makes you think Nixon's impeachment and
Gingrich's first congressional campaign were 5 years apart.

So lets see, Mousy Milt has dated people you'd die to meet, yet he
hasn't been on a date since High School and he's been in relationships
but has remained outside of relationships....
Milt can't keep track of his lies and wild stories....

he's mortgaged to the hilt, even though he pays his employees shit. He
has a lot of customers walking through the door, but the average sale
is about $10, in a store where the average sale should be well over
$100 (a camera store)"
--Milt Shook
http://groups.google.com/group/talk.politics/msg/908a7665672487c5?&
...and let's remember Milt's loony claim (below) about a margin call..
"When you're (sic) margin is called, that's a liability, not an asset.
If
you have an account with $100,000 in it, and you borrow $10,000 to
buy with, you only have $100,000 in assets; until you pay the loan,
that $10,000 is not an asset; it's a liability. When the margin is
called (for shits and giggles, let's say for the full amount of
$10,000), there is no way to say that you haven't lost $10,000. In
fact, you're actually out $20,000, because you're out the $10,000
for the loan and the $10,000 to call the margin."
-- Milt Shook Apr 2007
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.impeach.bush/msg/a39f580c3012e718?hl=en&
...and Milt hasn't yet explained how a $10,000 margin call will result
in a $20,000 loss, presumably above and beyond whatever loss of market
value in stock precipitated the margin call....
...and of course we can also wonder why a former business consultant
would issue a stupid statement like the one below..
Still, it's illustrative of a single point about right-wingers.
They cannot effectively argue their political opinions in a
fair and objective way, and resort to personal attacks more
nearly resembling the epithets of a grade school bully than
the counter-arguments of an adult..
Again proving that "conservativism" is essentially banal and
devoid of any higher-ordered cognitive abilities, and will
fall into the dustbin of history..
Henh! I'm not surprised that Crayon/Porker thinks he knows
something he doesn't actually understand. He's caught up in
the malignant narcissism of the neoconservative ideology,
so his alleged 'misspelling' of the Norden bombsight is but
an evasion to distract from the rest of his faulty reasoning..

I know, just like those "magnetic capacitors" of his..
--THe product of his infertile imagination, no doubt..
Yup, but I did find that "sloop" of his for sale..
--At salvage prices..
Oh, I never have. He has this notion that he has me cowering in the
corner every time he brings up something personal, but it just makes
me laugh. I just threw him a zinger yesterday, when I told him
"Sometimes I lie about my personal life on Usenet." I predict he'll
use that as a .sig, and think he has me by the balls. He's really just
too stupid to realize that, when it comes to anyone's personal life,
no one knows shit that the person whose personal life is in question
doesn't want you to know. And most of us normal people don't care.
Really, Jeffrey? Obviously, you haven't been reading the thread.
But hey; why don't you explain to us how the Norden bombsight would
have performed well enough to allow the Allies to only kill the
Germans, and "liberate" the prisoners in the camps.
Keep in mind, Bush was trying to suggest that the mere bombing of
something apparently prevents the "evildoers" from, well, doing their
evil. Please explain how the Norden bombsight (great Googling there,
Sparky!) would have made that possible.
Can't wait to read it.
<LOL> Oh yeah, that was a real zinger.... as if it's not obvious
that Shook lies....

...and yet Shook went berserk when I re-posted his lies about being a
page....
And most of us normal people don't care.
...and that's why Shook posted this little funny....
"Consider yourself done, or else. if you ever contact me, or anyone I
know, ever again, I'll turn it in to the police down there in Florida,
and let them investigate it. I am a total stranger to you, we have
never met, and you have no reason to look up information about me. As
for proving malice, well, that's pretty much in every post."
"Don't bother me ever again."
"And I do mean NEVER."

It's part of the conservative mindset. They can't treat with others
as equals. They need to be in a position where they can
simultaneously bully and try to control, whilst loudly proclaiming
their victimhood. Parkie's got that self destructive streak in
himself, where he'll keep pushing and pushing until finally he pushes
the wrong person and is destroyed. Part of him NEEDS that.
I suspect that that's why he works so hard to be disliked, and why he
makes such idiotic errors. He needs people to laugh at him to justify
his behavior.

Conservatism is for people who won't think or can't think. It's what
makes it so vile, because evil isn't the opposite of decency; it's the
mere absense of it.

I always shake my head and marvel that he puts so much into my remark
that when I was in high school (over forty years ago), I used to get
drunk and tear around the mountains of central California. I can't
even figure out what point he thinks he's making. I don't think he
had much of a youth himself, because he doesn't understand that others
had one.
Now, if I was STILL getting drunk and driving in the mountains that
way...well, moot point. The mountains tend to kill off drunk drivers
pretty fast.
Maybe one of these days I'll give Parkie a gift, and put up a list of
stupid things I did as a teenage (driving around drunk was just one of
them). He can masturbate to them or whatever it is he does.

It was the FIRST real bombsight, and has been improved upon many times
since then. By today's standards, it wasn't a very good bombsight.
But it still wouldn't allow the plane to drop bombs that killed only
those handful of Germans who were surrounded by thousands of
prisoners, or make big heavy allied bombers fly all the way to western
Poland and back in one run.
Face it: it was one of Putsch's most idiotic statements yet.
Like his mind, it had a few barnicles, did it?
That Jamieson apparently thinks his drunkenness is normal says a
lot.... As for my youth... I was working hard and actually making
money when I was in High School... which is why I can relax and live
off my investments today, while Jamieson continues to work and live
and to mouth long after the age I retired... and he will no doubt
continue to work and live hand to mouth until that eventual coronary
slaps him down...

I'm sure that Jamieson did a lot of stupid things, not only in his
youth, but all his life... for instance, abandoning that car sure
was stupid.. but then driving a car that one would just abandon is
indicative of a whole lot of stupid.....

Like I'm supposed to be upset by insults thrown at me from a moron who
abandons his muffler dragging heap of a car alongside the highway?
I think Lochner's imagination has some barnacles... The only boat of
mine that's been for sale was a ketch, not a sloop.
You blowhard morons can't decide on my name yet you think you know
about my property...
Nope, we're going to let you succumb to your own self-destructive ways..

There's that passive/aggressive victimhood thing again. Notice how he
changed "he pushes the wrong person and is destroyed" into "you
morons...destroy me."

It was in direct response to a comment by Zepp who claimed he liked to
drive drunk. Anyone who is proud of that should be told he knows about
"dead drunk".
