Migrate Profile When Upgrade to AD

I have just upgraded from a stand-alone server to active
directory. When I add an existing Windows 2000
Professional workstation to the domain, I then copy the
local system profile to the domain profile in the User
Profiles section under My Computer Properties. (Side Note:
all users are administrators on the local machine and
basic users on the domain.)

When I move the user profile and log back on as the user,
if I try to open Outlook, Office XP starts to run the
installation. It then fails on error 1770.

If I upgrade the domain users profile to administrator, it
works fine.

Any help on what I should do differently or how I can
remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Melinda

Hi

You say that all users are administrators on the local machine. If that the old
user (from before AD), you need to put the domain user in the local
administrators group to let the users continue to be administrator on the local
machine. A side note: Instead we put the NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE resource into
the local administrators group on all workstations to let all domain users
automatically become local admins. This way all domain users are automatically
local admins on whatever computer they log into interactively (from the
console).

Also we solve the workstation to domain user profile change by (in the
registry) changing the profile path for the new domain user to point to the old
user's profile folder.

If the user is not a local admin, you might need to to something on the
permission side. Use tip 4631 and 2240 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at

If it's a large migration, you may also want to try and
use the User Profile wizard from www.forensit.com. Let me
know it that works. Thanks.
