For several months now, I get a toolbar notice to install some updates to
Windows XP & IE.
I am running Windows XP Professional SP3, and IE 7.
The following security undates fail to install:
Cumulative Security update for Activex Killbits for Windows XP (KB950760)
Security Update ofr Windows XP (KB950762)
Cumulative Security Update for IE 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376)
If these updates are critical, how can I force them to install? If they are
not critical, how can I stop the update manager from constantly reminding me
that I need to install these updates? I don't want to turn off the automatic
updates, but I can't figure out how to remove this reminder. It is on the
taskbar, and on the shutdown window whenever I go to shut down my computer
from time to time.
Thanks for any help and suggestions anyone might have.

I received a response to that original post from PA Bear, and followed his
suggestion found in White Paper #906602 - "How to troubleshoot common Windows
Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation
issues."
That did not solve the problem, and I still get the "Update failed" message,
along with the Yellow shield on my taskbar wanting me to install the updates.
Does anyone have any more suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Thanks,
The correct newsgroup for Windows Update issues (as I pointed out in my
reply to your original thread) is microsoft.public.windowsupdate.
Your original thread in IE Security newsgroup:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.security/browse_frm/thread/b6c5b934f7ebd29b
Did you try KB943144?

I also pointed you to the WindowsUpdate.log and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093: Did you find any Errors in
WindowsUpdate.log associated with those failed updates?
I also pointed you to free support options
(https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527): Did you open a
free support incident?
A boatload of updates were released on 12 Aug-08, one of which
replaces/supersedes KB950759 (released in Jun-08): Are you being offered
these updates now?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed WinXP
SP3?
EDIT: In another thread in WinXP General
(http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/browse_frm/thread/ffd2df033114a7fb),
you state that Norton 360 was recently installed. When (date) did you
install it? Did you upgrade to Norton 360 from an earlier version of a
Norton application (e.g., NAV 2004)?

Once there, click on the IT Pro link to get direct download of the Update
for your version of Windows.
Some are done a bit different to others; just read the wording properly.

Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia
To PA Bear, I did not try every single thing you suggested, though I tried
most of them.
To Mick Murphy, I tried your suggestion about custom installation, and this
solved the problem with the installation. I will keep your suggestion on file
in case I have the same problem in the future.
Thanks, guys, for your great help!
