Hi all,

This is a call for new members of Green-India to introduce themselves to the rest of us in the community.

'New members' may be defined as those who are yet to make their first post regardless of when they may have joined.

We're having an exceptionally slow month. From an average of 120 posts over the last three months, we're suddenly down to 31 this month for no apparent reason. While we've had slow months before, this is a rather steep decline.

So I thought I'll invite you to speak up. You may describe your interest in the topic and write about the work you do. If you've recently joined, Green-India is mainly a community of technical professionals in the clean energy space and most of our discussions are dominated by this group largely made up of renewable energy experts and energy efficiency auditors.

But there are also architects, water conservation experts, several entrepreneurs, members of the civil society, academia, software professionals and others who are not easily put in a category. I would like to hear from everyone.

Please include your full name as required by Green-India policy. One more thing -- CDM consultants may please excuse. We're biased against them and happily so. Search archives for more information.

Thanks,
Manu

Convener,
Green-India

Hi,
I am an architect from Pune. I am sceptical about technology altogether, because I believe that resources are finite, and as long as we are 'growing/ developing' we are not quite going to reverse any trends. But that being humanity's trend, and me being just another architect, I stick to honesty in architecture as a solution.

I am currently working on the design of bungalows, water and sanitation systems. My clients say that they are very happy with me. My learning ground and prior work has been with Biome environmental solutions( Bangalore),and The ecological society ( Pune).

If you were to build your homes please do try to build them yourself -actually along with the mason. I think this way we will have smaller homes which are honest to our needs, and not extravagant. Architects are a luxury :) I like green india because its educative.Green technologies do help in making the users more responsible of their backyard produced stuff and hence resources at large. The awareness is awesome, thanks to all of you.

Sincerely,
Pooja Joshi.

Hi Amit, Richa, Pooja and Abdul,

Thanks for your messages and for your kind words about Green-India. I'm glad you're finding the forum useful. I'll respond to some of the points in a separate email.

Other new members who are thinking about introducing themselves but haven't made up their mind, now would be a good time to send that email.

Even if you have been here for some time, made a few posts but have questions you haven't posted, please don't hesitate.

A community can only thrive if all of its members participate in it from time to time -- even if it is only to seek answers rather than provide them.

If the share of members who benefit from a community as silent observers far exceeds those who actively participate in it, it's not a healthy trend. I look forward to your post.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi Amit,

That's a fascinating profile.
Are there any cleantech areas in which IIT-Kharagpur has demonstrated leadership compared with other IITs? You mentioned fuel cells. Which are the best research institutions working on fuel cells in India?

I also admire Nissan-Renault - the only company among the big auto majors which is working on delivering a no-frills consumer electric car to the market as early as next car.

About LED lighting, I notice that on your blog you have given fairly low scores to some of the leading names in India in this area. D.light for example, has pioneered low cost lantern -- as low as Rs.500 (without any subsidy, if I'm correct) that I believe is flying off the shelves. Why do you give them only 6/10. I'm curious.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi Richa,

Very interesting profile as well. Would be great if you could elaborate what 'greening of supply chain' involved at Moserbear.

I happened to meet and interact with your CEO Rajiv Arya at a panel on Cleantech I chaired at Entrepreneurship Summit in IIT Delhi earlier this year. Extremely knowledgeable fellow with a very helpful and humble demeanour. Learned from our interaction that MBIL apparently isn't bullish about CPV. They're missing the bus in my opinion.

As to Green-India, I work hard at keeping the noise to signal ratio as low as possible.

Thanks,

Hi evryone and Manu,

Trust me people who are writing now are not hesitant, probably just tied up with something. :) like me!!!!

Let me introduce myself, I am Kanchan Bhat.

Background - I am an Architect from Pune University and then I did my Master's in Sustainable Design from the University of Sydney along with Graguate Diploma in Heritage Conservation. My core interest is Sustainable Design but I did Heritage Conservation out of sheer interest and enthusiam those people have to save the whatever little bit history they have. It's infact amusing to a certain extent. During my time in Sydney I worked with various energy companies and in all kinds of roles. Learnt a lot about carbon trading (REC's).

Currently -  I am working as an Associate Consultant with Wipro EcoEnergy which is a very new division of Wipro located in Bangalore. I am into Green Infrastructure Solutioning. I take care of sustainable designing solutions and green certification for our clients. We are venturing into GRIHA and I am sure it will be an exciting ride.

I very often in my client meetings find that people want green building just as a value addition, to raise their market stakes. They do not understand the value of being sustainable and energy efficient. The hardest part is they are not ready to change how much ever you try to convince them, but I am determined to do it sooner or later.

I have just joined thsi group very recently and thank Manu for initiating this introductry session.

Everyone is from amazing backgrounds ans it will be very intersting to interact with all.

Warm Regards

Hello all

I am not a new member as per Manu's definition! I have made a few posts
and recommended this excellent group to many. However, ecouraged by
Manu's gentle nudge, here is this email.

I am Sreekumar N, working with Prayas Energy Group, Pune. I am
electrical engineer (BTech - IIT-B and MTech from KGP) and worked with
the industry (control & instrumentation, IT based systems for power) for
few years before joining Prayas. Prayas works on public interest
oriented policy analysis and advocacy in energy sector, with higher
focus on electricity. This covers electricity sector policy &
regulation, energy efficiency, renewable systems and climate justice.

Let me share with you our recent publication, which focusses on
equitable access to electricity:

Electricity for All: Ten Ideas towards Turning Rhetoric into Reality - A
Discussion Paper , Prayas, May 2010.

This discussion paper suggests few concrete action ideas that could be
taken up to accelerate effective electricity access for the poor in India.
Even after six decades after independence, and two decades since the
arrival of reforms, the poor continue to miss the electricity bus. The
first decade of reforms had no explicit focus on poor. The few recent
initiatives like the Rajiv Gandhi household electrification program or
quantification of standards of performance for distribution companies
are yet to yield results. There is an overwhelming feeling in civil
society that the basic needs of the poor have been neglected, while
there is disproportionate interest in market related issues, which
immediately benefit large consumers. This paper suggests ten concrete
action ideas, which could result in a quick improvement of electricity
service to the poor. These ideas have to be implemented by regulators,
distribution companies and the Government. These are techno-financially
feasible and can be adopted within the existing framework.

Your comments will help us to do better.

Hi Pooja,

Unlimited economic growth within a limited ecosystem cannot be sustained forever, there's no denying that. At the same time, at Climate Revolution we believe, we have everything at our hand to address this.

While I promote solutions to the climate crisis many of which are technological, I keep my distance from people who promote a continued consumption driven pathway believing that a new  technology breakthrough in future will solve all our problems.

As veteran members may know, I hold the opinion that much of our problem is political in nature and that we have everything _today_ to get cracking at this. It's not going to be easy but we can do this.

My learning ground and prior work has been with Biome environmental solutions( Bangalore),and The ecological society ( Pune).  If you were to build your homes please do try to build them yourself -actually along with the mason.

That's a very interesting suggestion coming from an architect and I believe, potentially controversial  among your peers? I wonder what would your former boss say about this. Chitra is a dear friend and member of Green-India.

Hi Abdul,

Thanks for introducing yourself.

Incidentally, I've been to your Hyderabad campus couple of years ago (IYCN's National Youth Summit on Climate Change), met Rohan Parikh and saw the amazing work you guys are doing. We were lucky to hear a talk from Mr. Narayan Murthy himself.

Some of the members may not know but Infosys is quite a leader in cleantech adoption at its campuses. They are moving towards making all of their operations completely carbon neutral through on-site solutions in emission reductions and off-site investments in renewable energy generation technologies.

They are building a new campus in Hyderabad now where they are trying an interesting  experiment. They've divided half the building area that will feature radiant cooling inspired from the way large buildings were cooled in India during the Mughal era.

The rest of the building will feature conventional cooling technologies. They expect the first part will consume about one third energy. More information in this Treehugger post from a few days How They Air Conditioned In India 400 Years Ago

It references this entry by Caroline Howe, who is incidentally, also on Green-India. Caroline has been closely involved with Infosys' Green initiatives and would be great if she could talk more about them.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi Manu,
Thanks for your appreciation of my profile and also for Renault-Nissan's electric vehicles plans. Answers to some of your questions/ comments is mentioned below.

Bio-diesel is one of the areas in which IIT Kharagpur has shown good activity. Bio-technology and agricultural and food engineering are the two departments which are working in this area. Biotechnology department of IIT Kharagpur has also made collaboration with UC Berkeley in this field.

In fuel cells area, there are certain national labs like CFCT, CECRI, NCL and DRDO. All of these work on fuel cell research and development and have build some systems also. NCL has done some good work in the catalyst area. Other than these,IISc and IITs also work on fuel cell. But, I guess the research done here in fuel cell area is way behind the world standards.

Selco is one of the high scorers because it has done a really great work by actually reaching the masses and developing confidence for solar energy in them. Selco has entered the market in a time when rural people where not at all willing to accept solar solutions because of failure of some previous goverments projects on solar lighting.

Dlight has developed lantern for Rs. 500, but for this the quality is compromised. The battery life is not satisfactory. The illuminated area by the lantern is very less. Moreover, I have come across some compplaints regarding thier after sales service. Solar lighting is realtively new thing for the masses and if proper after sales service is not provided, the rural people or anyone for that matter will lose the confidence on the technology itself.  My comments are meant only as constructive criticism. Dlight has ofcourse reached people more than any other company has, for which they should be applauded.

Thanks and Regards,
Amit

Thanks,
Manu

Hi all,

I'm Abhishek Vaddadi, pursuing MSc(tech) Finance from BITS Pilani and currently interning with TransGraph Consulting Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad.
I take great interest in Alternate energy sources, especially the policy and advocacy aspects related to them. The discussions in this group are
very insightful and interesting.

Though nothing to do with my career in this sector, i'm a volunteer for an NPO, Nirmaan which works on building a socially and economically
empowered nation focusing on two key sectors of Education and Employment. Under it's employment projects we are trying to generate
employment in the villages close to our campus through renewable energy projects like Solar lamps and biogas plants.

Hello All,

My name is Anand Natarajan. I am definitely a new member, by all terms
of the definition. This is my first post, my first week, my first
involvement and all other 'firsts' on this group. A bit of a
background - I completed a Dual Degree (B.Tech & M.Tech) in Chemical
Engineering from IIT-Madras. My final year thesis project involved
fabrication and characterization of Solar PV cells from very commonly
available materials such as ZnO (basically talc! ). I am working right
now in a Consulting firm based out of Hyderabad, and am involved in a
firm-wide greening initiative here.

I joined this group mainly to see what the level of public discourse
and discussion about India-specific sustainability and environmental
challenges are. Undeniably, most of the material, discussions, debates
and actionable items towards sustainability/greening available on the
internet are relevant only to the US or European setting. I find it
surprising that there is no single point, or even a group of
organizations/websites which direct the Indian eco-conscious consumer
towards the answer to that question- "So what can I do?" I am glad
that I found this group though, it seeks to answer that question and
some more as well.

Hope to interact with more members of this group on a lot of topics in
the days to come... and start getting the rest of our fellow 1.3
Billion countrymen to start doing something about saving this world
for their grandkids :)

Cheers
Anand

I also trade in Carbon credits and trades as well hence the interest  in Green Energy.

My main interest are in relating more to knowing more where the  Byproducts of power thermal plant operation need to be considered in both the design and operation. Sometimes waste heat due to the finite efficiency of the power cycle, when not recovered and sold as steam or hot water, must be released to the atmosphere, often using a cooling tower, or river or lake water as a cooling medium, especially for condensing steam. The flue gas from combustion of the fossil fuels is discharged to the air; this contains carbon dioxide and water vapour, as well as other substances such as nitrogen, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and (in the case of coal-fired plants) fly ash and mercury. Solid waste ash from coal-fired boilers must also be removed, although some coal ash can be recycled for building materials.

Fossil fueled power stations are major emitters of greenhouse gases which according to the consensus of scientific organisations are a major contributor to the global warming observed over the last 100 years. Brown coal emits 3 times as much green house gases as natural gas, black coal emits twice as much. Efforts exist to use carbon capture and storage of emissions but these are not expected to be available on a commercial scale and economically viable basis by 2025.

I look forward to sharing knowhow on the tryst with the thermal plants in controlling the emissions....

And I am not a CDM consultant....

Lets discuss,

Regards,

Girish Raghavan

So I thought I'll invite you to speak up. You may describe your interest in the topic and write about the work you do. But there are also architects, water conservation experts, several entrepreneurs, members of the civil society, academia, software professionals and others who are not easily put in a category. I would like to hear from everyone.

Hi Manu & All Green India Members,

Hi All & Hi Manu

I have been a member for quite a few months and I have never posted a
single post, but I have taken the opportunity of contacting few of the
esteem members through this forum via emails.

I'll start with introducing myself, I am nowhere close to any of you
guys, as I am not an engineer, architect or any research scientist
like you all at this forum.
I am just an enterpenur and came across your blog through google
search engine when I was looking for renewable energy, waste
management, recycling, water harvesting, etc.. We are coming up with a
small Hotel/Resort in Rajasthan and was looking for information that
we could use, which would not be too expensive but at the same time if
we could incorporate renewal energy and water conservation/harvesting,
and thanks to this forum came to know and learn various available
clean technologies out there that can be used for our project.
Even though I want the Hotel/Resort to be Environmentally Friendly,
but it depends on the cost that would incur and making other directors
of the company to sway on this.

All in all I would like to thank all the members over here with there
inputs and for their service towards Green-India and better
environment of the world and am proud to be part of this interesting
group.

almost 10,000 tones of fire wood, which is directly effecting the
environment. Now I am working on Alternative fuel for curing tobacco

Hi All,

I am Serveshresht Sawhney aka Servo and have been a member for last couple of months.I got the reference from one of my juniors of IIT Roorkee and have found some interesting posts on this group.

I am a graduate of IIT Roorkee 2005 in Computer Sc and worked for one yr in NOIDA as a software engr. After that i worked for the last 4 years in Schlumberger (Oil and Gas Services) primarily based out of mumbai. Very recently, we (some frnz and me) have started a company in the name of ARKA Power in the field of Solar Thermal Technology. One of my frnz has been doing research in this field for the last 3 years and we have come up with our own technology. A small pilot plant has also been set up (20 KW electricity) in Maharashtra to demonstrate the same. We are now in the process of comerciallizing the idea at a significantly lower rate than what is being offered in the market. A brief write up of what we are mailing to clients is given below:

ARKA Power envisions a future where renewable energy can compete with traditional fossil fuels as an economically viable source of power. The social consciousness and global demand for clean energy is already increasing at a swift pace. ARKA is a pioneer of Solar Power in India and provides turnkey solutions in the field of CSP/Solar Thermal Technology.
Achieving cost efficiency by leveraging its cutting-edge research, the firm provides implementation expertise, and contract negotiation consultancy to corporate clients and governments. ARKA’s core technologies, the Linear Fresnel Reflector, Solar Collector and Steam Generation Systems, use modular flat reflectors to focus the sun's heat onto elevated receivers thus producing energy with greater efficiency. This translates into a direct cost benefit for our clients. Over six patents have already been filed for this novel invention.
Further, these systems are designed to be compatible with current and upcoming power plants. ARKA implements customized, scalable and robust solutions in the range of 1 MW to 50 MW scalable power plant solutions and also provides solutions for generating steam/ heat transfer through thermic fluid starting from 50 KW thermal power.
Steam is generated with the following parameters:

temperature of steam: 280-300 degC
pressure of steam: 40 bar
mass flow rate: 0.1 Kg/ sec per module
Area required: 300 sq.m per module.

Please note that we build scalable solutions in a modular manner and each module is capable of providing 50 KW of thermal energy.

Please find attached our company profile.
You can also go through our website: http://www.arkapower.com for further details.

We are also in the process of tieing up with some other compaines to offer PV solutions for under 10 Cr/ MW.

IIM Ahmedabad and a few other institutions have shown interst in incubating us.

If somebody can help us with some clients or contacts who may be interseted in setting up a solar thermal plant for either generation of electricty or use of steam, it would be great.

Further we are also looking for start up companies in the field of zinc air batteries or storage solutions and have a potentially big market for the same (of the order of billion dollars). Do let me know if anybody has any contacts for the same.
You can contact me on my cell phone +91 9920318031 for any further queries or clarifications.

Dear All,

I am not new to the list, but never introduced myself. My association with the group started with the "giant vacuum cleaner" in Delhi.

I am Sarath Guttikunda and founded the group "UrbanEmissions.Info" in Delhi three years ago, to function as a repository for information on air pollution. We develop simple to understand tools and run a working paper series, all of which are available for free. I believe in two points

1. most often right decisions are not taken because there is lack of right (or enough) information, either at the understanding of the problem or the availability of the solutions.

2. there is action at the local scale. A lot work of gets done because there is local interest. Similarly, the focus for our work is air pollution - their sources, their impacts, and the potential for mitigation of various interventions, which at the local level (urban or rural) is a primary indicator (and monitored on a regular basis) and the any extension to the interventions (like CO2) is a co-benefit and not the other way around.

At the research front, we are developing an air quality forecasting system for India and a more focused one for the Delhi area. The system will be operational in early September, in time for the Commonwealth Games. Please keep in mind that this is not a pollution control system - but an information generation and dissemination system - basically tells you how bad or how good an area is in the coming days, in terms of air quality.
http://www.urbanemissions.info/model-tools/forecasting-systems.html

Comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

With regards,
Sarath

This msg is for those in chennai and also having an interest in drama.

I have written a tamil Drama on source segregation - four youngsters join together and find implementable solution for a group of flats.

I wrote this for the annual day of a leading builder in Chennai, who is willing experiment for introducing green concepts.

In an ongoing condtruction, grey water treatment, Passive sewage treatment, rainwater harvesting, roof lawn are all being implemented with a passive cooing to almost eliminate air-conditioning in Chennai

He would be willing to sponsor this drama in each of the complex built by him ( more than 100) . I need volunteers who would be willing to convert the script to reality.

The drama is in tamil - so atleast a working knowledge is a must.

Dear Servo,

I am glad to see an indian company in solar csp based electricity generation. Could you elaborate on the economics of installing these power plants. What is the payback period for steam generation and for electricity.

Do look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and Regards,

Dear Ashima,

Are there certain renewable energy technologies you are looking at or all of them. What is your take on solar water heaters and building integrated PV.

Are there any guidelines or resources for architects who would like to incorporate renewable energy technologies in their projects.

Thanks and Regards,

Dear Satya Krishna,

I'm extremely pleased to have a farmer amongst us.

Have you already developed an alternative fuel for curing tobacco leaves or are you looking for one?

After a bit of looking up I see that there are several different methods of curing tobacco leaves practised in different regions.

While I don't understand the process you use, you might want to explore the possibility of using

a) solar drying in solar driers made especially for this process

b) waste heat from biomass gasifier that generates electricity with the same amount of biomass you're consuming today

c) direct heat from biomass gasifier (no electricity generation)  that would reduce present biomass consumption

or a combination of solar drying and biomass gasifier for back up.

Please do not hesitate to write to Green-India on the topic.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi Anand,

Great first post. Indeed, most such resources are meant for the American user only. But even amongst such resources, I think one would be hard pressed to find a community where so many professional experts from such diverse fields volunteer to help individuals with that question, amongst others.

Glad that you find Green-India useful. Feel free to use it to the best of your advantage.

Hi all -

Been on this group for a while out of generic interest and find it quite useful.

I come from a Finance/Capital Markets background, working in Hong Kong at a US Investment Bank covering Asian Emerging Equity Markets. In a former life, I have worked as a Software Developer, having done a M.S. Information Systems from New York University and have co-founded a online security technology startup when back in NY (2005-2007). I am originally from Mumbai.

Generally interested in the start-up scene in India and use this forum to keep a tab on the latest developments in the renewable energy space in India.

Question : What are the key unresolved software/information systems challenges today in the clean energy space?

Tarun

Hi all,

I am Swapan Mehra and have enjoyed being a part of the great dialog on this group for a while. At the risk of being slightly unpopular on the group, I will say that I worked extensively in the carbon finance sector for the last four years. But while being sceptical of the true impact of pure carbon trading on real climate change issues, I believe that putting a price on ecosystem services and other mitigating actions is an important part of rallying the resources needed to protect our forests, reduce industrial emissions etc. Whether this is done best through a upstream or downstream carbon tax or RECs or CERs or VERs can be debated. I do believe that CDM at least got us on a path of thinking creatively about reducing emissions, made climate change a very well known issue and catalyzed a whole new breed of enterprises focusing on new technologies etc.

I now run my company, Iora Ecological Solutions out of Delhi and try to work across a wide spectrum of Environmental Finance projects. I am currently focused on Forestry, Coal Mine/ Waste Methane Reduction and Distributed Renewable Energy systems. I am trying to work out a convergence of Carbon and other conventional finance systems to enable such projects. I am also currently studying , with great interest, rainwater harvesting systems, which I feel have huge relevance to our cities.

I’d like to sincerely thank Manu for facilitating this excellent group with very  significant and useful contributions from members.

Regards,

Swapan

Thank you, Swapan. Good to see you acknowledge flaws in carbon trading mechanism. Completely agree that putting a price on carbon is crucial. I consider revenue neutral carbon taxation to be the most effective tool for that.

I am attaching an informal version of the paper to this mail. It was basically modelled using Programmatic CDM like the project of 100,00 household biogas plants being executed in Nepal. It examines the validity of such an approach in India, focusing on targets producing high amounts of kitchen waste i.e. waste from messes

Hi,

I'm Satish Kumar.

I did my engineering in Electronics and Communication and my masters in Eng. Management.  I’m currently based out of Bangalore and work with US Consulting Firm which has a wide presence in India. My core function is business consulting and market research of the Automotive and of late Infrastructure sectors. In the automotive sector I have worked on evaluating various companies’ hybrid strategies and other related areas. Of late I have worked on the infrastructure sector, studying the initiatives taken by cities for sustainable development and the creation of megacities.

Personally I’m very interested in the area of solar energy and its various applications ranging from the use of solar lanterns at the rural level to its use in urban settings. I would love to hear from people working in this area. I’m also willing to assist or help organizations or NGO’s working in the areas of renewable energy, rural development etc with my expertise during weekends.

As somebody earlier had pointed out this group has been a great source of information and discussion on India specific issues related to renewable energy.

Dear All,

This is a call for new members of Green-India to introduce themselves to the rest of us in the community. It's actually an old and a popular thread. If you look at the original post from last year, it generated a tremendous response and infused new life into the community. Many of you have told me personally how much you liked this thread. I'm hoping  to revive the discussion.

"New members" may be defined as those who are yet to make their first post and those who may have posted occasionally but never introduced themselves. You may describe your interest in clean energy and other technologies and solutions that address climate change and write about the work you do or the institution where you study.

If you've recently joined, Green-India is a community of mainly two groups -- experts and learners. However, since the field is so broad, there are no experts on everything. I think it's fair to say that all the experts are also learning from the discussions all the time.

We have technical professionals in renewable energy and energy efficiency who dominate but there are also architects, water conservation experts, organic farmers, several entrepreneurs, members of the civil society, academia, software professionals, activists and others who are not easily put in a category.

I would like to hear from everyone. Please include your full name as required by Green-India policy. Also avoid advertising or promotional content. CDM consultants may please excuse. We're biased against them and happily so.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi all and hello Manu,
Its really a great group to be a part of and the diversity that one finds here is quite astonishing. I'll give a brief intro about myself.
My name is Sumeet Mohanty and I'm working as a Product Development Analyst at Agni Bio-Power Energy Pvt. Ltd, a SanFrancisco based company which has just started its operations in Mohali, India. I did my major in Biotechnology from IIT Kharagpur before this.
The core focus area right now for my company is converting biomass residues into drop-in replacements for fossil fuels. Though as we're growing, we're also looking at exploring auxiliary revenue streams and I'm looking at product development in a couple of these areas.
One of the areas that I'm fosussing on right now is exploring micro-algal methods of industrial effluent treatment. I initially joined this group looking for professionals who have some degree of expertise int his field. Another area that we've just strated exploring is the organic fertiliser business.
It'll be great to get introduced to professionals with expertise in these fields.

Hello everyone

I have been associated with the group since a year or so and have found the discussion very informative. Myself Santosh Kumar Patnaik, a forester by training. I had my Masters degree from Forest Research Institute University, Dehradun. I have been associated with PISCES (www.pisces.or.ke) for last 3 years which aspires to impart new knowledge in the realm of bioenergy. PISCES seeks to redefine policy on bioenergy and influences governments across South Asia and East Africa through cutting edge research on the issues pertinent to bioenergy.

Am always on the look out of the narrow subset of adaptation to climate change and bioenergy generation and use. Livelihood being the measure entry point, I examine how communities are coping with changing challenges taking biomass as an affective instrument. Besides am also involved in biochar research and wish to expound on the improvement in soil characteristics because of biochar use.

Am hopeful of a great learning atmosphere and more interaction amongst the energy freaks

Hi Sumeet,

Thanks for the introduction. There are multiple technologies and processes in the areas you mentioned -- agricultural and industrial waste management -- so there are tremendous opportunities to be tapped. One of them -- liquefaction of biomass waste in rural centres, where agriculture waste is abundant, and transporting it for utilisation in a network of CHP power plants in cities, where power demand is high, is explored in this excellent presentation video by Allan Jones (starting at about 38 min into it, up to around 43 min).

Look forward to your contribution in discussions around your areas of interest.

Thanks,
Manu

Hi Santosh,

PIECES appears to be an interesting project. Can you share with the group, in a new thread, greater details about your involvement. Also, if you or anyone from your organisation participated in their recent conference in Sri Lanka, do share thoughts / presentations (if any) from the experience.

Biochar application in soil has tremendous benefits in terms of carbon sequestration and improving soil characteristics. I'm glad work is being done in India in this area.

Dear all,

This is Jayakumar, presently attached to a Cement manufacturing company as Energy Manager.
Areas of interests are Energy efficiency improvement in industries, Energy management systems in organisations, Training and development etc etc
I have started 'Sustenergy Foundation' - a research organisation to develop sustainable solutions in 2008, We have developed ' Sustenergy Pyramid(TM) - an integrated energy management methodology for sustainable energy conservation industries. This would helpful for organisations especially designated consumers to reduce specific energy consumption up to 35% through systematic activities. We also bagged ' Kerala state energy conservation commendation certificate 2011 in the category of research & innovation.
SF also started Thermal imaging services in India to provide cost effective solutions to condition based maintenance / Diagnosis.
If interested Green India members can avail those services at a subsidized rate.

Hi Everybody,

Thanks Mr Manu and Everybody for giving me the opportunity to connect.
Let me introduce myself as an "alternatives explorer" struggling to
find the ways to invent and develop disruptive technologies in not so
conducive enviroment. I have to admit that i'm yet to find one!
I've been working for last 4.5 years in Solar PV roof-top systems,
megawatt scale design and planning, LED product development and
lighting solutions for Large Green Areas.
Also, I have 2 patents published for 1) Solar Photovoltaic PCU and
Load control 2) LED luminiare and lighting system. I would like to
dabble in finding novel material and/or process for PV cell to reduce
recombination lossess or tuning the hot minority carriers to
dramatically multiply the carrier separation and collection, carbon
materials for heat transport.
I'm Proprietor at Savitur Energy and Director at Capella Energy
(www.capella-energy.com).
I hope to see more discussion on R&D in addition to market
information!

Hi Mitesh,

Great to have someone like you on the list. Solar photovoltaic is a heavily researched area with several hundred million $ of research funding going into it. So it's no surprise that you're finding it tough to make a breakthrough.

Of course, funding $ do not always translate into innovation and invention, if that were the case, Microsoft would have been the most innovative company by now. :) But still, I would suggest considering other products / technologies that have wide applications but are relatively less well researched.

Thanks,
Manu

Dear all,

My name is Ali Mohammed Adil. I hold a B.E degree in Electronics
Engineering from Osmania University, Hyd and M.Sc. degree in
Engineering and Management from University of Glasgow. I am currently
working with the Sustainable Hyderabad Project (http://www.sustainable-
hyderabad.de/) handling communications and marketing strategy of
"Solar Schools Pilot Project". I also freelance as a research and
content writer.

I joined the Green-India group during my association with Bridge to
India pvt ltd (http://www.bridgetoindia.com/home) as a Research
Assistant (Intern) but haven't interacted much since. But I have been
following some really interesting conversations here (suburban farming
in Pune!!)

On the upside, I do intend to contribute and interact more in the
coming weeks as there are serious plans of running a fundraising event
for the proposed pilot project (decided after failing to get FIT
approval from the turbulent AP government) Since the focus of the
Sustainable Hyderabad research project is tied to encouragement of
sustainable lifestyles, the fundraising plan fits and will focus on
general public awareness besides inviting private participation.

I hope to garner support and motivation from my interactions here as
this will be the first time I am working on building a fundraising
strategy from scratch. Indeed I look forward to some good
conversations here that can help with new and innovative ideas.

p.s. I really hope to leverage the tremendous support and first hand
knowledge coming out of Green-India group.

Hi All,
I am amazed by the information shared on the Green India platform & look forward to learn more about Green efforts.

I am Anuradha Barpande, based in Pune, Maharashtra. Myself & my husband Pradeep Barpande are Landscape contractors & have handled quite a few corporate & institutional projects. We specialize in Large tree
transplantation & soil erosion control using bio degradable Geo-textile. Now a days various ideas are being implemented by architects to achieve greenery. Planting on roofs and walls is one of the most innovative and
rapidly developing fields in the world of architecture and horticulture. To promote such novel concepts of Living walls and sustainable Green Roof, ELT India Enterprise was formed by us in 2008. ELT India Enterprise
are the sole distributors, growers and installers of ELT Easy Green ®, Canada. ELT Easy Green® is a line of products built around one main idea - sustainable living. Initially products were getting Imported. After research & experiments in Pune, Mumbai, Chennai & New Delhi, both the modules were designed in India & now we are producing these systems for ELT Global, Canada and export it to , US, Canada, 4 other countries through ELT Global.

We have developed a facility at Pune to study the different aspects of green roofs and living walls in varied climatic conditions of India & are equipped with total infrastructure to grow living wall panels and roof panels.

ELT system and vegetation warranties are supported by the certified network of contractors, maintenance staff and growers, trained at our Pune facility.  With the strong support provided by this widespread network, we confidently offer the assurance demanded by the customers. Training for installation and maintenance is being provided by us. We aim to make these types of green technologies a safe and reliable way to leave a legacy of sustainability for generations to come.

Dear all,

Thank you Mr Manu for the mail. I had worked on the Pricing of Electricity in India: An Analytical Framework. But due to the non availability of data i had to restrain myself to theoretical one. Never the less my M Phil work opened new vistas of demand side management strategies and its important which made me to go deeper and deeper.

Recently i had worked on the relation that electricity has got with irrigation where in my interest became more concrete on DSM and its linkages to tackle the problems.

I am sure and look forward for avenues and discussions where in i can learn and share knowledge for a green and peaceful India.

Thank you

Thanks,
Manu
