Your Daily Reprieve for Sunday February 9, 2014

From Stuart, Florida

"Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain -- and most fools do."

--Benjamin Franklin

It is not by muscle, speed, or physical dexterity
that great things are achieved,
but by reflection, force of character, and judgment.
In these qualities old age is usually
not only not poorer, but is even richer.
~ Cicero

Our cute little darling and that spoiled brat across the street do exactly the same tricks. Man is so constructed that he cannot be absolutely impartial. It is contrary to human nature. We can, however, pause and reflect before we pass judgment, and we can try to put ourselves in the other fellow’s position. We are prone to judge him solely on his acts while we judge our motives and thus excuse ourselves.

~The Eye Opener

O Lord that lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thankfulness.

~ William Shakespeare

Big Book Quote

"The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost
the power of choice in drink. Our so-called will power becomes
practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring
into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the
suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are
without defense against the first drink."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, There Is A Solution, pg. 24~

LEW FINAMORE - SACRAMENTO, CA 2-15-03

Lew Finamore, from Chilliwack, British Columbia recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the Sacramento Spring Fling in Sacramento, California on February 15th, 2003. He got sober way back on November 16th, 1963 at the age of 28. Lew is an excellent storyteller, and he shares several of those stories on this recording. He was sponsored by Wino Joe Leath of Tyler, Texas. Lew has done a lot of worldwide traveling speaking at AA functions. He tells a couple of stories about going to South Africa and New Zealand. Lew also goes over the Twelve Steps. A really good talk.

674 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Tradition Six - "An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose."

THE moment we saw that we had an answer for alcoholism, it was reasonable (or so it seemed at the time) for us to feel that we might have the answer to a lot of other things. The A.A. groups, many thought, could go into business, might finance any enterprise whatever in the total field of alcoholism. In fact, we felt duty-bound to throw the whole weight of the A.A. name behind any meritorious cause.

p. 155

Twenty Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

In the past, we kept right on drinking in spite of all the trouble we got
into. We were foolish enough to believe that drinking could still be fun
in spite of everything that happened to us. When we came into A.A.,
we found a lot of people who, like ourselves, had had fun with drinking,
but who now admitted that liquor had become nothing but trouble for
them. And when we found that this thing had happened to a lot of other
people besides ourselves, we realized that perhaps we weren't such
odd ducks after all. Have I learned to admit that for me drinking has
ceased to be fun and has become nothing but trouble?

Meditation For The Day

The lifeline, the line of rescue, is the line from the soul to God. On one
end of the lifeline is our faith and on the other end is God's power. It
can be a strong line and no soul can be overwhelmed who is linked to
God by it. I will trust in this lifeline and never be afraid. God will save
me from doing wrong and from the cares and troubles of life. I will
look to God for help and trust Him for aid when I am emotionally
upset.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that no lack of trust or fearfulness will make me disloyal to
God. I pray that I may keep a strong hold on the lifeline of faith.

Thankfulness
I try to hold fast to the truth
that a full and thankful heart
cannot entertain great conceits.
When brimming with gratitude,
one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love,
the finest emotion that we can ever know.

Daily Reflection

GETTING THE "SPIRITUAL ANGLE"

How often do we sit in AA meetings and hear the speaker

declare, "But I haven't yet got the spiritual angle." Prior to

this statement, he had described a miracle of

transformation which had occurred in him—not only his

release from alcohol, but a complete change in his whole

attitude toward life and the living of it It is apparent to

nearly everyone else present that he has received a great

gift; " . . . except that he doesn't seem to know it yet!"

We well know that this questioning individual will tell us six

months or a year hence that he has found faith in God.

LANGUAGE OF THE HEART, p. 275

A spiritual experience can be the realization that a life

which once seemed empty and devoid of meaning is now

joyous and full. In my life today, daily prayer and

meditation, coupled with living the Twelve Steps, has

brought about an inner peace and feeling of belonging

which was missing when I was drinking.

Pot Luck

The universe is transformation; our life is what our thoughts make it.
--Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

It's awesome, the power we each wield in the life that unfolds before us. The inclination of our thoughts invites that which we encounter, which is that which we expect to find. What we can become or experience is limited only by our imagination. Our dreams shine like beacons in the dimness of our minds.

Just as our thoughts can nurture positive experiences and outcomes, negative episodes might be drawn to us, too. We can be sure, though, that we use this individual power to create the flavor of each day as it's met.

Our attitude is the by-product of our thoughts. It is in our attitude that we discover strength or weakness, hope or anxiety, determination or frustration. Alone, we determine whether our attitude will be loving or jaundiced.

The breadth of personal power is awesome. Today will be what I choose to make it. No more and no less.
