Your Daily Reprieve for Wednesday August  7, 2013

From Stuart, Florida

Make each day your masterpiece.

--John Wooden

It takes time and trouble to persuade ourselves
that the things we want to do
are the things we ought to do.
~ Agnes Repplier

"My spiritual awakening also came with a flash of light.

The light was blue and it was mounted on top of the car behind me."

~Chris D., As we See It

What will be the final result if AA becomes too attractive? It is felt now that some people are joining our ranks, not because they have a major drinking problem, but because they fear they have alcoholic tendencies. Our meetings are interesting, friendly and informative. Will AA degenerate into a Social Club and cease to be the last refuge of the suffering alcoholic?  Will we find eventually that we have too many “enjoying” AA and too few fully appreciating the “responsibilities” that attend our membership?

~The Eye Opener

Big Book Quote

"An illness of this sort—and we have come to believe it an
illness—involves those about us in a way no other human sickness
can.
If a person has cancer all are sorry for him and no one is angry or
hurt. But not so with the alcoholic illness, for with it there goes
annihilation of all the things worth while in life."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, There Is A Solution, pg. 18~

368 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Step Seven - "Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings."

For us, the process of gaining a new perspective was unbelievably painful. It was only by repeated humiliations that we were forced to learn something about humility. It was only at the end of a long road, marked by successive defeats and humiliations, and the final crushing of our self sufficiency, that we began to feel humility as something more than a condition of groveling despair. Every newcomer in Alcoholics Anonymous is told, and soon realizes for himself, that his humble admission of powerlessness over alcohol is his first step toward liberation from its paralyzing grip.

Twenty Four Hours

  A.A. Thought For The Day

We in A.A. are offering an intangible thing, a
psychological and spiritual program. It's a wonderful
program. When we learn to turn to a Higher Power, with
faith that that Power can give us the strength we need,
we find peace of mind. When we reeducate our minds by
learning to think differently, we find new interests that
make life worthwhile. We who have achieved sobriety
through faith in God and mental reeducation are modern
miracles. it is the function of our A.A. program to
produce modern miracles. Do I consider the change in my
life a modern miracle?

Meditation For The Day

You should never doubt that God's spirit is always with
you, wherever you are, to keep you on the right path.
God's keeping power is never at fault, only your
realization of it. You must try to believe in God's
nearness and availability of His grace. It is not a
question of whether God can provide a shelter from the
storm, but of whether or not you seek the security of
that shelter. Every fear, worry, or doubt is disloyalty
to God. You must endeavor to trust God wholly. Practice
saying: "All is going to be well." Say it to yourself
until you feel it deeply.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may feel deeply that all is well. I pray that nothing
will be able to move me from that deep conviction.

"I had no problem admitting I was powerless over alcohol,
and I certainly agreed that my life had become
unmanageable.
I had only to reflect on the contrast between the plans I made
so many years ago for my life with what really happened
to know I couldn't manage my life drunk or sober.
AA taught me that willingness to believe
was enough for a beginning."

Daily Reflection

A "DESIGN FOR LIVING"

We in our turn, sought the same escape with all the

desperation of drowning men. What seemed at first a flimsy

reed, has proved to be the loving and powerful hand of

God. A new life has been given us or, if you prefer, "a

design for living" that really works.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 28

I try each day to raise my heart and hands in thanks to God

for showing me a "design for living" that really works

through our beautiful Fellowship. But what, exactly, is this

"design for living" that "really works"? For me, it is the

practice of the Twelve Steps to the best of my ability, the

continued awareness of a God who loves me unconditionally,

and the hope that, in each new day, there is a purpose

for my being. I am truly, truly blessed in the Fellowship.

Pot Luck

"You can't experience victory if you refuse to surrender."

Boy, that surrender thing was (and sometimes still is) a hard thing for me to accept. I mean, how could I possibly win or succeed at something if I'm told to give up and surrender? I've always been taught that the things worth having were worth fighting for, yet the program told me to surrender. What was up with that?

I remember trying to figure this out when, during a meeting, I heard someone define surrender this way: "Surrender means laying down your arms and joining the winning side." Suddenly it made sense. I looked around at all the winners who had surrendered and overcome their addiction, and I realized that if I stopped fighting, stopped resisting, and surrendered too, then I could recover as well.

Today I have come to see the wisdom in the saying, "We ceased fighting anything or anyone." I now understand that the majority of my pain and discomfort comes from fighting and resisting things as they are, and that immediate peace and serenity are mine the moment I surrender. Once surrendered, I can pray for the right thought or action, and the solution always comes if I remain open to it.

Today I understand the saying, "You can't experience victory if you refuse to surrender."
